I just spent 5 hours struggling with my computer in order to cancel a Chdsk.exe command that I launched because that Mac-supported Windows crashes my games extremely easily (excepted RA2 and Morrowind)... It also did me things like launching Firefox 3 in 5 minutes, or putting me a blank screen for no reason, breaking my web connection...
The Chkdsk blocked at the end... some of you guys know what is a hard drive disk check in Windows XP, right? Well, the thing asks you before starting "hit any key if you want to cancel".
I put a WEIGHT on several keys and resetted the comp more than 40 times, but no. Generally i just need to reset it less than 15 times, but...
I tried to mess with the DOS, but the MacBook's keyboard don't have brackets (and no Del key, that said, great for RA2) and i can't use commands.
Finished with a simple thing: "start Windows with last working parameters" (or something like that), it worked.
For concluding... **** the guys that say "you can use Windows on the new Mac computers".
-
And i tought that having only one mouse button is bad?
They have macs at work so I have no choise there, but they are on OS X.
Try saving money and get a good PC or try finding a keyboard with the missing keys that works on mac too. Other than that, I can only wish the best of luck.
-
First mistake: buying a Mac for gaming. They are horrible.
plugin a windows usb keyboard. That may fix a few of your keyboard issues.
also {}[]?
(this was typed on a mac)
besides games, windows works great for me.
-
One mouse button isn't that annoying, i have a touchpad (mice are better, that said) and I can make the right click by putting two fingers on the touchpad and clicking on the only button.
I have a MacBook classic (the small, new laptop, all plain ugly white)...
And I can't make both of these brackets!
I have a numpad in my own keyboard (K for 2, I for 5)..., F1-F5 are used for luminosity and sound volume... for sure, the computer is small (15' screen), but the keyboard too.
Indeed Mac are horrible for games, but especially running Windows games on a Mac.
-
im not taking any chances. hp pavilion is good.

im not taking any chances. hp pavilion is good.
Yep, it sure is. I have that too and my PC, they are both just about as good, the laptop only has 1Gb more RAM(3Gb) and 0.70GHz less processor power(PC has 2.70GHz) both are dualcore. And my PC has GeForce 8600GT and laptop GeForce 8400m.
-
I have a near brand new Dell Vostro 200 Mini Tower, which (if not for special offers) costed over 1000 dollars.
-
...windows forever... ...and ever... ...as long as they dont run outa business... ...that would be bad!!!!
-
If windows went out of business then game developers would be forced to make games on the mac. All will be well, then.
The ONLY bad thing about macs is the game/program support. It is a much better platform, but developers do not use it because windows has 87% of the market.
vista got better with SP1 but it is still horrible.
macs Support 2 button mice. the "mighty mouse" is actually 2 buttons.
-
macs have a good fast start up i have to admit
-
I have Macs at my high school that run OS X but they still suck. They are the old colored ones that wont let you be on the internet more than 5 minutes before it fails.
-
School macs are horrible. Novel did a half-ass job on its mac version port. and all programs run through the server making them godly slow.
I hated macs(because of school) until I tried it at a buddies house.
-
And NOW gentlemen, even better:
"Windows can't start because the file is missing or damaged: \WINDOWS\system32\config\SYSTEM"
I know how to repair... copy the file from the windows install CD, BUT i need the "\" to make this and the BS MacBook keyboard just has the "/". "\" can be done with a key combination but ONLY on Windows, not on DOS.
I could reinstall Windows, but in that case there are chances that i lose some data including the RA2 folders and all my bots !
I really should have bought a PC laptop. Cheaper, and better config.
___________
EDIT
There is a working copy on the repair directory of Windows, but...
I'm actually working on bash 2.05b (Mac) because I can't make the \ on MS-DOS thanks to the keyboard.
I simply need to copy and overwrite the C:\Windows\repair\system file to C:\Windows\system32\config\system.
The command is cp, ,but on the Mac bash, i can't find the right directory!
-
Aaah, the problem is solved, i can access windows now with no lost data, but i went into SP1 now, and i must reinstall SP2 then all the drivers that needs Windows to work decently on a Mac... In one word "screwed".
I have actually no sound, RA2 doesn't work because of crappy graphic driver, the mouse is messed up, no right click... and no internet because SP1 doesn't recognize WiFi.
______
EDIT:: AAH IT WAS DELETED AGAIN! I bet it's a virus!
-
AAH IT WAS DELETED AGAIN! I bet it's a virus!
Hehe, of course its a virus. - Venko was thinking, after all, he allways knew that to have a good anti-virus is criticaly important for one PC. Venko was watching this post with complacency, cos even with installing and uninstalling many sh** programs his windows was still working perfectly, cos Venko knows that viruses makes windows sh**, not installing programs, drivers, updates, etc. After all, he remember that with his Kaspersky, he was never have viruses or problems with his windows.
-
I do admit that in terms of using a platform for media, music cration, mixing, burning, etc. Mac computers are not at all bad...
-
well not it's not a virus. it just deleted the file once more then it was fine.
-
Then how you will explain that on my PC, files was NEVER deleted by themselfs ?
Who or what delete yours ?
-
Venko: it happened to a bunch of people. i googled it. im not the only one and one of my friends got that too, and i have no internet link with him.

Pyscolone: agreed.
What are you talking about ? Seriously, be more specific please... ?????

i wish i had a laptop...
my pc has an older geforce uh, i think 5400... not sure.
-
Everything's fine now, i played RA2 this morning, but now Windows is blocked because I CANT ACTIVATE IT, considered that i installed it several times, perhaps four times.
EDIT: YAYYY! It worked! Activated!
Gonna build and send all to Giga.
-
Guess what guys?
A thing re-deleted the file and I'm screwed again.
-
Bump.
That time, my comp can't access to a part of my hard drive as i could do easily 4 hours ago (it says it's "not formatted" but i'm pretty sure it is). Windows takes ages to load but works with no problem once started.
Wasn't much important things, another older version of Windows that i don't use (actually the one that i used before the problem stated earlier, 6 months ago), several files of few use...
...Excepted ONE 3,5-Gb folder...
...AND GUESS WHAT IT IS ???
-
NO IDEA MAN!!
-
Dear God Naryar, you sure do have computer problems....
-
Don't mess with System32, COZ I HAS IMPORANT FILEZ...
-
DSL?
-
Everything.
All RA2.
I got a 6-month-old save of both DSL and stock on my iPod however...
-
...So you lost all your RA2 stuff?
-
Yes.
Apart from some scarce bot files, TXT's and other useless stuff...
...hopefully i can reinstall it right now.
-
.....Man....
Sorry, Nar...
-
Out of curiosity, are you running Windows from Boot Camp, or are you running it through programs like VirtualBox, VMWare, or Parallels?
-
Boot Camp.
Although i have no Mac OS installed on my comp right now.
EDIT: I will try to recover my RA2 folders on the disc. Will check if this works.

What's the point of owning an Apple if you don't have the Mac OS?
-
I started with Mac OS, then installed a dual Mac/Win OS, then comp crashed, i could not reinstall the Mac OS because of CD issues and i have just Win XP now.
-
(http://imgur.com/F0QZS.jpg)
Why choose one when you can have all three?
(yes, I need to clean my screen)
-
And... i just reinstalled Windows right now !
Probably have to reinstall everything again, though i think i can salvage most files from the other partition - the partition that could start Windows yesterday.
Still no RA2, apart from Inf's and Sage's fresh copies that MIGHT be still here.
And a 6-month-old save (including RA2) that i could retrive from my iPod but i need to find the link cable.
I love my comp.
(Posting from the family's comp)

I wanted to have a emulated "WIN 98 SE" on my PC, so i tried many different emulators. They seems to work well after i installed the win 98, but they work only with desktop windows based programs... When i tried to run some 3D games, i realize that they will not help me, cos the video is software emulated and its too lame to run 3D games. So anyone can help me and tell me a win 98 emulator that will be ebale to run 3D games thru my real video card and system (compibilty mode sux and i didn't install a real win 98 cos drivers for ATI HD 3870 crossfire and other new parts don't exist for example and so...). So... Please someone tell me a emulator that will run 3D games for win98 on my Win XP pro SP3 at home. Note: My MoBo supports hardwarly the emulated systems and take one of the CPU cores for the emulated system.

Couldn't you just partition your hard drive and install Windows 98 on there?

Do you think i don't know this option???
And after i install a real win 98, how im supose to get a drivers for my parts witch are mostly new? Q6600 quad core clocked to 3,7GHz, 4 GB DDR3, 2x ati HD 3870 crossfire (im going to replace them with two 4870 soon), Gigabyte MoBo DQ..."something", 1 TB hards and so... How im supose to get drivers for these new parts? Do you think they have ANY driver support for Win98?
-
I don't really know what you're expecting, venko. If you're wanting to run Windows 98 while taking advantage of your mighty processing power, I'm afraid you're sh** out of luck. If you just want an emulator that allows for some hardware 3D acceleration, try doing some research on your own.

On my screen, it's orange, just like yours.

Off of the top of my head, I only know of ones that work on OS X.

oh. looked different haha.
meant no offense, just didnt think you were an admin. definitly a veteran.

BUMP!
for your problem you should use parallels

I'm jumping back to the Mac topic. I like Macs, but I was raised on Windows 95, ME(completely junk OS) and now I have XP.
In school, in the Graphic Arts class I took, was my first experience with a Mac (they had them because Macs are notoriously better for graphic design). They were almost brand new iMacs with OSX (not sure which version though). Once I learned the basics of Macs, I loved it. I still wouldn't trade my PC for one just yet, though.

AAND... guess what... my S32 folder got raped and i can't run windows, it seems the ntoskrnl.exe file is damaged or missing.
I did found the solution on the internets but my comp says access denied when i try to fix the thing...
I just hope i won't lose my RA2 files.
-
Naryar: U need a new computer. STAT

LOL naryar has a virus. you're screwed dude, notskrnl corruption means whatever is messing up your computer most likely is a rootkit with administator access. Just reformat and hope for the best, stop going to porn sites/using limewire and download a safe browser like firefox with noscript plugin, damn.
-
I am currently installing Windows on an unused partition of my hard drive and will try to fix the ntoskrnl file and save my RA2 and other important things on my 6-year-old first edition iPod.
Or you say it's better to save files, format everything and restart from zero ?

Doesn't Nar have a Mac?
If he does, there is only one known virus that effects Macs.

I have a Mac with Windows XP installed on it :S
It works now but i have issues with internet connection (i'm on the family's computer)
-
Thats always been my favorite thing about mac's is that you can have Windows and OS installed and switch back and forth. That and the superior graphic design programs The downfall is that windows does not work the best on mac's. By that i mean glitchy, slow, etc..

Exact point of the thread.
Anyways everything's fixed now.

That's always been your favorite thing about Macs? Were you born in '06? Bootcamp didn't come along until Intel processors (which were first introduced to Macs in '06). Previously, you had to emulate in order to run Windows, which presented the slow and glitchy problems you listed. If you run Windows in Bootcamp, your Mac acts just like an ordinary PC. Any glitchyness is the fault of the user.
As for superior graphic design programs, that hasn't been true for a few years now. Sure, Final Cut Pro is nice, but the programs on Windows have caught up (and Photoshop is now offering more on the Windows front than the Mac). These days it really is all about personal preference.

AND HERE WE GO AGAIN.
Now it's the goddamn trackpad button. It's completely screwed, i keep making selection boxes with the mouse pointer without holding anything, the right moause button function works 1/5 times and the left mouse button is unpredictable (hell, i just deleted half of this post just by moving the mouse, all hail Ctrl+Z)
I tried to reinstall the Boot Camp trackpad drivers but absolutely nothing ensured.
Needless to say it makes bot building a pain, i can barely rotate the bot in the bot lab.
My old Mac mouse plugged on, it fixed everything except i have no more right mouse button... and combining the trackpad and the mouse to work together is hell.
I'll try to buy a normal USB mouse for replacing the trackpad, but if it does not work and i can't fix the damn thing...
...well the NAR AI Beta won't get more bots built by me.

HP Pavilionnnn. But Vista is gay
-
I know Vista is ghey. I use XP and will always use it.
-
Am posting this on one of my university's computers since mine crashed AGAIN.
Damn thing keeps BSODing just after the windows loading screen (Seems it's a Registry entry in System32 that's the issue.) - and as i am an idiot i didnt made a backup of my important files on my iPod.
I just hope i can save my files now...
-
Crash at startup is probably due to drivers being ****ed up or Windows not being able to access the HDD partition where it's kernel is. Have you fiddled around in the BIOS settings lately?
-
Nope. I just defragged my drive yesterday...
I ran chkdsk.exe in MS-DOS, it kept coming back to 50%... was pisssed, reboot, and it works like a charm.
-
macs are crap but have great screens
macs are crap because i got a pop up saying on a freinds mac press delete to go back

??

While trying to reinstall windows to make RA2 work i accidentally
(http://allisonkilkenny.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/george-bush-sour.jpg)
my whole internet connection WITHOUT repairing RA2, and i can't reinstall windows because i broke the Boot Camp drivers CD.
(Dwarf Forteress works now though)
The Windows CD is probably damaged as well, so i'll try to reinstall windows after having torrented the drivers (if i manage to do it), either i get Ubuntu and try to make RA2 work on it, either i buy another computer.
-
I think you should juts get a new computer. After all the trouble you have gone through I don't see the benifit of just going through the same problems again. Also win7 is much better than vista.
-
I torrented the Windows OS and put it on a DVD to make it an installation disc. Obviously it worked.
-
@ Naryar: Do you live in a warzone or something? What's with all the destruction?

i dont remeber posting that

ewwwwww
Get it legally or don't get it, Nary.
-
I will do as i wish :P
Damn comp can't even install ubuntu. Maybe i should buy a CD rather than download/burn to a CD...
