I took over administration duties for a forum on ProBoards a while back. I wasn't too impressed. The remnants of that site are still around somewhere (see if you can find 'em).

As for Mr. TeamXtreemer, stick with the software you've got. PHP BB is good stuff, and isn't too hard to work with.

Keep a link to your forum in your sig, invite friends (online or IRL), and make your forum standout. Find a particular community you want to go after, and cater towards them.

I would suggest being more unique. Back in the day when everybody in the community tried to get their own forum going, the ones that succeeded succeeded only because they were able to offer something the other sites didn't offer. One of the reasons why the forum I tried to start up failed was because my site didn't offer anything that couldn't be found elsewhere. Sure, I had some of CTC's parts and I think some skins, but that wasn't enough to distinguish my site from the rest.

But hey, even if your site never really gets big, don't fret! You're gaining experience. Administrating even a tiny forum allows you to learn how to operate forum software from an administrator's standpoint, which could be useful later.

I used to have a quite active forum, but the software borked (my fault, I admit) and CBA to reinstall it again.

And to keep people on a forum. Don't install arcades. Don't make too much categories, 3 for a starter forum is enough. Have interesting people, don't be nazi. Don't spam, don't be a n00b.
