Title: I caught a fish

THIS IS NOT ME ...... but, I caught a fish this size yesterday on a regular rod and reel with 30# test line.

I was VERY tire by the time he was in the boat and only have cell phone pics and the best pic shows me with my shirt up showing them where I had just got finned in the belly by a dink catfish .... so you dont get to see my fish.

No, I let it go but he will die because my friend gaffed him in the head, instead of under the chin where it would not have hurt him.

I got chewed on pretty good for letting him go because another guy eats gar and I don't.

On Topic: I've only ever had one fish that size on the line. It was a huge Lingcod, but the nasty bugger shredded the line after about 30 min. We were fishing for much smaller Rock Cod that day, so we were completely unprepared for a fish 5+ feet in length.


Hell of a job on your part landing the thing though. Fish stories are about 100x better when they're not about "the one that got away." Alligator Gar are awesome.

I always wanted to go fishing, my Grandpa was going to take me but then he had his leg amputated and had some strokes. Then my dad said he would take me, then he sold my fishing rod. Don't actually know where I can go fishing either.

I wanna go fishing.

You're not missing much. It's not as much fun as it looks on TV. It's more of a acquired taste, in my opinion. You have to be excruciatingly patient, at times.

I fish every once in a while an d every time I'm reminded of why I don't fish that often.

Been fishing the Trinity River for about a week catching a few catfish ..... mostly little dinks on worms, but caught a few nice ones on lines.
Anyway, yesterday we were catching the usual little dinks and my buddy reached over and set the hook ...... he said "I got his little ass" ...... then looked at me kinda funny like and said "he got me hung up" , then proceeds to pull his line loose ........... and it takes off!


A LONG time later, since he was using 20# mono and a 2/0 hook we landed this 77" long 31" around and about 150# alligator gar!


This is a 14' 48" wide flat bottom boat with the middle seat removed and that is a 3# coffee can beside him!

Gar get pretty big. Pretty much because no one wants to eat them, so they don't purposely catch them. They're usually thrown back after being caught.

With that said, I've still never seen one that big.

When I first saw this thread, I thought "This guy probably caught a large-mouth bass. I'll go in and impress everyone with my official catch-and-release on a sailfish". I didn't expect a gar.

Great catch there. It rivals my sailfish catch in the fact that you got yours in the boat. Mine was still in the water right next to us when we got an official measurement. Yours was 6'5", right? Actually pulling it on-board definitely makes up for the 7 inch difference.

Unfortunately, I don't have pictures of the sailfish, but I do have official State Fish and Game Department paperwork. It's a big deal to catch a 7 foot sailfish, especially off the coast of Wrightsville Beach North Carolina.
