Title: Debate: Schools: State/Public or Private?
Post by: CaptainUseless on November 25, 2010, 12:53:05 PM
One of my friends (Mind Windmill) constantly goes on about the school Gazea2, him and I go to and says that it's really awful because it's a state school. So I've decided to make a thread about it. I went to a Private school for most of my life (12 years) and moved to a state/public school last year. Personally I prefer Private Schools. Which type of school do you guys prefer?

Not many people will have been to both kinds to have a good knowledge of both really.

But it'll differ from school to school.
Some state schools suck, some private schools suck, some state schools are great, some private schools are great.

That's a good point.
Ok even if you haven't been to both types of schools, would you like to go to a private/state school?

Once again, it's all relative.
The biggest private school near where I live is often known as being pompus but rubbish (even the grade results were quite bad so i've heard) but my state school is very good.

Although, once again it depends on what people rank as important for a school.
I care little for my grades (I have impossible, non-academic ambition for when I leave school  ;)) and for me it's the people in my school that's important.

It does depend on what people consider important for a school, I think the main thing should be grades, but it should be a place you can enjoy yourself as well. The main thing for me is that income bears no relevance at all on academic skill or the ability to learn. I think everyone should be entitled to the best education that they can, regardless of wealth or class.

Yeah, in an ideal world everybody would get equal education, but sadly, in a capitalist country atleast, that aint gonna happen.

One thing that does annoy me about schools nowadays is that it's all about getting the idiots a passable grade rather than getting everybodys best out of them.
The way the system is atm, it's the quantity of passes that matter to the school and the teachers rather than the quality of the grade.

It's not that tests are getting easier, it's that the systems been adapted to make everybody THINK that the latest generation is more intelligent.

Useless didn't explain it too well. Mind Windmill blaims EVERYTHING on our school being a state school. If he does bad on a test, he'll say, "It's because it's a state school."

He doesn't listen when I say that last year our state school was in the top 10 for GCSE grades. He thinks that because we go there, we're tramps. TBH, I cant wait until he leaves next year and gos to a private school (I don't mean that in a bad way but at least he won't be moaning).

@Scorpion - Good points.

@NFX - That's the thing. Everyone's opinion on what makes a good school is different. I, personally, want good grades but also want a good school environment. Our school is good for both but Mind doesn't think so.

I have only gone to public schools (including college/university), so I can't really state a preference. I will say that I found the experience to be satisfactory. Sure, it could be a lot better, but it provided me with the tools necessary to self-educate.

And not with David Cameron as Prime Minister. I ain't paying twelve thousand pounds a year to learn.

D'you mean trying to average everybody out? 'Cause what gets me is people seem to warm more to the students who have problems and struggle through to get passable marks, the underdogs, if you will, rather than the students who can live "normal" lives and get great results.

Which schools that Gaz? -mildly interested-

I'm indifferent about it all. I went to a run down state school, with craaig, but we got perfectly good results. Its not the school, its the teachers (whether you get on with them or not) and the amount of time and effort you put in. Course, there are exceptions, like when the wirless around the school dies, or reboots etc.

Well, I think david cameron is better than those labour idiots, he's doing the right thing with the cuts, but he's not cutting the right things, especially when it comes to education.

And yeah, the way schools work, the more passes they get the better it is for them.
Think about it, in the news after the gcses what is it you always hear about?
A rise in A*s? Nope.
It's always a rise in c's and above, or even just passes in some cases.

Infact, that reminds me of one thing that does effect me and really annoys me in my school.
Now I get high marks, but I want to do something with music when I leave school.
It's my passion, my love, and i'd never forgive myself if I didn't atleast TRY to follow it through.
But still, me and a close mate of mine who's in a similair position have had to listen to the deputy head (I think that's what she was) go on and on about how we need to do as many academic things for the school and to not focus on our music as much.

Once again a perfect example of how a schools image is more important than the actual students

The language teachers at my school suck aswell, mine actually told our class that she doesn't believe in being smart

And I've already got ed miliband pegged as an idiot yes-man.
One of the first things he said was that even millionaires should get child benefit!

That's Labour's thing, really. They just like throwing money at whoever wants it, not realising they almost ran the country into the ground by doing so.

As long as the schools don't give a damn about grades and concentrate on actually teaching useful stuff, then I'm happy. I'm enrolled in the country's national university. Which is somewhat on a rut because the government's cutting their budget on education. >.<

I've been in both. A private school has way better equipment for labs, but they are also willing to pass every student, no matter how much they're lacking in education. This basically makes most private schools refuges for retards. I remember one dude who was a complete arsehole not willing to learn anything, he still passed because the school wanted monies from his parents.

I find public schools much better. While the equipment is worse and the teachers are sometimes underpaid, those with a vocation stay. And most of those are actually excellent. The courses are harder, but you also learn way more. They don't treat you like a little prince like private schools do, and I like that - you fuck up, you're out. Also, they're completely free (at least in my COMMOONIST COUNTRY), and you get 50% off from public transport fees (I pay $10 per month and can go anywhere I want in Warsaw. This includes buses, trams, subway and trains.).

I see what u did there.  ;)

One example I can give of private schools failing is Prince Harry, when he had £100,000 spent on his education at Eton, he came away with two A-Levels, an E in Geograph and a B in Art.
