Title: Debate: Goal-line technology
Post by: Gazea2 on July 02, 2010, 02:13:42 PM
Do you think goal-line technology should be allowed in football?

I'm English and we got knocked out of the World Cup because of no goal-line technology. I think that they should bring it in. It will only take 20 seconds (give or take 10 seconds) to check whether it was a goal.

They might not even have to do that. What about having a laser on the goal line? When the beam is broken, a board could light up and say "GOAL".

So, what do YOU think? Discuss.

Put sensors inside the soccer ball and the goalposts, you'll know right away if its a goal. Like hockey (?) Something like that lazor might work but then a player could trigger it.

Also, need a slew of refs up in boxes with instant replays telling the ref if something if offsides or not.

Good idea. (Deja Vu much? :P)

I forgot about the offside decisions as well! It is annoying when they get them wrong.

I always advocate increased technology in sports. Of course, I don't really care either way. It's all just a game to me.

I disagree. We were atrocious. Sure, a goal would have helped our morale, but we can prove nothing.

I know we were really bad but it could have changed the game. Still, like you said, we can't prove anything. Another 2 year wait and then it's the Euro 2012. We'll do horrible in that and then get a new manager. Again....

I still think we need goal-line technology. In the premier league, nearly each week there is a dispute. This could solve everything.

A camera directly above the goalpost?

Nope, too much common sense needed.

I can assure you a lazor will not work........

The ball would knock it off.

I've never seen a bal knock down a Lamp post, but if you say so...

I think this would be a good idea.

Goal cam survives hockey puck I see no reason why it can't surrvive a Soccer/Football ball.

There are no sensors in the NHL (National Hockey League), but there is video review. Usually, the best angles are from the netcam (a camera that tracks the puck stationed in the very back of the net) and a camera directly overhead with a great top-down view of the goal line.

In England's case, you didn't even need any fancy laser or sensor technology. Just video review. I know FIFA is loathe to do that, but the blown calls (I recall another one besides the gaffe against England) have really put a black eye on the tourney. That goal wasn't even debatable - it was a good two feet in.

(P.S. I really don't think that a goal there would have made a difference to England. Sure the score would have been different and England clearly would have had momentum going into the second half, but Germany is by far and away the better team. That and British fans and media continually grossly overestimate their team and players compared to others around the world. They didn't lose because of a bad call, they lost because England is a slightly above average soccer nation who played a very powerful one.)

Agreed.
