I read something about this, and it does sound like BP were being massive dicks on the safety front. They were supposed to use 21 safety bracings on the main drill, but the ended up using six. To save time and money. And now 11 people are dead.

Please read it. It has a bit of clarification. The oil spill was most likely the cause... but in a way that you probably are not aware.
