Title: Bugs Thread
Post by: Resetti's Replicas on August 11, 2012, 10:42:31 PM
Bugs are really fascinating.  I found this little guy on the windowscreen.  So if anyone else happens to see any cool looking bugs, post them here.

That is most definitely a cicada.  I already got pissed with these when moving to Avignon one month ago - cicadas singing EVERYWHERE. Nonstop, as long as there is enough light.

Here where I live we have very few cicadas.

I have a few pictures of bugs as well... lemme image dump my camera.

Now for an orthopteran. Pretty damn sure it's Ephippiger ephippiger, at least the ephippiger genus.

Why hello there NWB

Crap quality I know, but I couldn't get closer because I was on rocks in a river bed. This is a damselfly, amusingly it's black.

Now for the last pic, a Papilio machaon which had damage to the left lower wing but it still flied with no problems.

And yes, in before Clickbeetle. But I was here before him :P

Bugs are cool, spiders scare the crap out of me.

Once I saw this gigantic praying mantis sitting on the outside of my house, it was like a foot long.

Naryar the entomologist? It's more likely than you think.
Nice pics, but the first one looks gnarly.

You could say that he's quite the bugger :P

Never would've thought that Naryar could find manly bugs though. Anyway, the worst bug encounter I've ever faced (Still facing it today) are Nuclear Zombie Ants. They look like normal black biting ants but we've been trying to kill then with ant poisoning for years now and they never die.

They're starting to make ant piles that are hidden under the grass so it looks like there's nothing there and then when you step on them, it's hell. These specific ants have been plaguing our Percussion the worst, lol. These flipping things are all over the practice field that we (the band) use, yet nowhere around the practice field that the football team uses to practice...

Ha!  I know this one.  That's a Calopterygidae.  Probably too blurry to get a genus though, even if I knew my European damselfly genera.

Also, here's a cool tiger beetle I just shot this spring.  Tiger beetles are a pretty shiny green color, but look at those huge mandibles and angry eyes... this one looks ready to bite something.
