I don't watch a lot of non-primetime TV, so I didn't see too many of his commercials, but what I did see was amusing

I remember i bought some of his car scratch remover. Did not work unless you went over the scratch like 10 times none the less. When you think of salesmen you think Billy Mays, When you think of Oxi-Clean you think Billy Mays.

Actually, the stuff Billy Mays pitched for was useful, for the most part. It may not have always been as effective as it should have, but still useful.

Mighty Putty just fixed my lyre. In case you don't know what I'm talking about, a lyre is a little metal thing used in marching band to hold up your flip folder (which is the booklet thing that holds all of your music).

I just watched the final episode of "Pitchmen" on Discovery Channel. The ending almost made me cry. God, I'm a wuss. lol

It seems almost a slap in the common consumers' faces that they are buying a quick-sell product called 'sham'-'wow'.... i.e. the ultimate 'sham'. 'Chamois' is a kind of leather used for polishing and drying. Why not make up a name that has 'Cham..' or the like in it? It's almost like they were 'looking down' upon their sucker-clients, and 'up' about their own selling-abilities by overtly placing in the name of a product 'sham'. The 'Wow' is in the fact that they can still sell a product that they overtly named 'Sham'.

These people were called 'Sophists'  (http://www.iep.utm.edu/s/sophists.htm)in Greece; we call them 'Spin-doctors' or 'Pitchmen' today. If a product or service is good, it will sell itself without the manipulative hype and mellodramatism... Their goal is to somehow control others, in this case get them to buy a product. But the control part is that which they find exhilarating and drives them. The more ridiculous the proposition offered, the more they know was their 'skill' in controlling said person.
 
You may say this doesn't happen. But I've seen it many times, and even presently have 2 Psychiatrist clients who play with people exactly like this in their practices. It's 'entertainment' to them...
