Title: Tutorial Request Thread
Post by: Naryar on September 21, 2014, 03:04:13 PM
Not actually a tutorial, but a tutorial request thread.

I'm old and experienced so I don't exactly realize what is missing from the tutorials section unlike some of our newbies.

Please post any subject of RA2 that has no tutorial thread here, I or another person will probably pick up on it and make a tutorial thread.

Note : Please do research before asking for new tutorials. I want no "hey do an AI tutorial" when there are at least 5 different ones already on the site.

Oooh I got one: mesh normals in a .GMF

I've tried over and over, but I cant get anything to work. I can kind of work around it by setting culling to 1, but that's poorly optimized and collisions are just broken.

That won't be me then.

Also maybe we should make a general .GMF help thread...

How to use extenders effectively?

If we're requesting for tutorials them let me explain this idea despite bending the rules of the forum a little.

Now I myself want to learn about some of the tricks in this game but I find the tutorials bit hard to read not that I can't read very well I can as long it's in a book and not on a computer.  So I ask for this would anyone and I mean anyone who's a veteran of Ra2 do some video based tutorials and hell it can help if the person sees what the teacher is doing so they get a better idea of what they're supposed to be doing.

That's a good idea. I could make something about t_verts and t_faces if it actually becomes a thread and people need help with it.

How to use extenders effectively?

That sounds useful. Especially for beginners

You know that DSL2 efficent building thread Naryar made? Could we have one for DSL3?

DSL3 as such is becoming DSL2.2 very very soon as far as I'm aware and as such may involve a whole load of new components and/or balance changes, so it's probably jumping the gun to write anything quite yet.

Has there been a tutorial (or meta discussion) about Ironforge yet? I've not seen any information regarding what weapons are betting in what situations, and the weight/power efficiency of motors etc

Is there a tutorial for creating custom decals?

Does arena skinning have a tutorial? Also, a custom arena tutorial with 3DS max would be nice because the other tutorial is mildly confusing and doesn't use 3DS max.

i'd kill to see a tutorial on starting off building extender-bots. some basic tutorials on effective chassis design, extender bases, what the internals on some common extender-bot types look like without the top-plate in place. it's something i've been dying to learn for a long time and i find myself in a complete builders block every time i try to even vaguely match the most basic designs i admire in the showcases nowadays and i find myself giving up on building altogether out of frustration. building isn't what it used to be and i need a refresher course in new styles like these. i especially admire irl-style bots with heavy chassis/extender bodywork but i just can never get it to look as good as i see around no matter how hard i try.

would anyone be interested in writing a tutorial on the more advanced building styles of nowadays for those of us stuck in 2006?

or if there's already a tutorial that im not seeing, would someone do me the favor of poiting me in the direction? there is nothing more that i want than to build some of the things i have in mind but i just... cant. it's frustrating and upsetting.

thank you all

here's (https://gametechmods.com/forums/general-support/how-to-make-extenderbots/msg750824/#msg750824) something i found while looking for a tutorial regarding extender-bots. let me just put it out there that the second post reads like greek to me. i couldn't tell you what half of those acronyms mean and what they could be pertaining to. and what the **** is a pixel chassis? where have i been? yeesh

p.s. thank you thyrus. i am definitely going to check that out!

Ra2cf is refering to component freedom. The mod that breaks the rule of 7 and ignores collisions plus it allows you to build over 800 kg without any additional components. I don't know what CE is referring to

 ive got the first thing installed already, i need to turn it on to start doing what i want to do though

likely a stupid question: are all of these extender based bots heavyweights or ++? like, are middleweight and lightweight bots with extensive extenderwork a thing/ even remotely effective as an idea?

edit: i watched that video and holy sh** that is cool, man.  :thumbup

Extenderbots are most prevalent in the heavier classes but folks still do them in the lower weight groups too. In my opinion though there's definitely a crossover point at around Lightweight where building an extenderbot just becomes a burden more than it is a help.

I try following text tutorials but I end up missing something. I've tried following your OBJ tutorial so many times and it never works so video tutorials are better for me
