Ianh05's Guide to making a neat splash with paint!
« on: March 20, 2013, 02:54:08 AM »
Recently I have discovered a quick and easy way to apply transparency to bot splashes, I want to share this with all of you in hope that it could help you enter more contests like BOTM without the fear of submitting a sub-par splash. So here is my quick and easy to follow walkthrough!

Step 1: Take screenshots (with F11) of your bot.

Step 2: Go to your screenshots folder and look for the screenshot, Right click on the file and click "edit".

Step 3: Use the fill tool to make the grey background white (right button by default in paint). The images need to be in .bmp format for this to work, it is the format screenshots are taken in so not much to worry about there :)

Step 4: Use google images to find a suitable background for your robot, for this bot "Oil Drill 2" we'll use something oil related.

Step 5: Resize the background image so it isn't too big by editing the file in paint. By right-clicking on the background and then clicking resize you can shrink the image down by a certain percentage.

Step 6: Go back to your robots picture with the white background, select the area around the bot and right-click then copy that part of the image and paste it onto your background. Make sure to click on the little arrow pointing down under the selection tool and select "Transparent selection" when you paste the image.

Step 7: Add more flavour, info and screenshots! google is your friend if you want to add more flavour to your splash with more themed images.

Tips:

*http://cooltext.com/ is a great website that provides a bunch of different text fonts/styles, if you want to add words to your image try this site!

*Borders help clean an image up and make it less of a jumbled mess, you can search google images or make your own borders to put around info and battleshots etc.

Hopefully this will let people know to focus more on the bot rather than on the splash...

although SotM hasn't been much of a problem lately, I guess.

Hopefully the Re-stocked AW design contests pick up pace along with BOTM too now, even though they aren't about the splash at all it might help to present the bots nicely.
