Title: GTM Robot Wars Series 1
Post by: WhamettNuht on May 20, 2013, 09:19:35 AM
Hey Guys,

Just wanna see if there's any interest for a tournament I wanna plan.

Arena will be my revamped Robot Wars Arena.
The main tournament will be for heavyweights, however if anyone wants to submit any LW's for a small LW tournament feel free!

The Heavy's competition heats will consist of 4 way first round battles, then followed by 2 head-to-head battles. (Like the Robot Wars series 7 layout). For added lols, a replica bot from the pack will be added to each heat.

The Rules:

-DSL 3.0 Beta Components + These ones from the pack:
https://gametechmods.com/uploads/files/RWComponents2.rar (https://gametechmods.com/uploads/files/RWComponents2.rar)
-IRL Designs only (Or more 'British' robot designs, so more flipper orientated than spinner orientated like America)
-Judge Bursts will be allowed from the DSL 2.1 Pack (1 per bot)
-BFE, AAM and all that other shizz won't be allowed

Any interest? Hoping to get at least 16 competitors, any more will be highly appreciated :)

I basically want to try and replicate the whole RW tournament style in RA2 with GTM :P

Any interest?

You have gotten my interest! I was wanting a DSL 3 tournament and there you are. I have a LW, which needs a bit of tweaking... Or a complete rebuild really. HW... Well I'll get busy.

It is good that you limit judge bursts to 1 per bot. Too much builders are thinking that it's a totally legal, normally powered part.

As much as I like using them for flippers, agreed. If I do, one's enough.

On the subject of spinners, I did say that I wanted it to be more 'British' based with the designs - much more lenient in the amount of flippers and axes to spinners. I might also introduce rules to the spinners, like you're only aloud to use the duel perm if your robot has 1mm armour or something :P

As long as it looks like it could actually be a proper Robot Wars entry, and isn't a replica or 'another version' or a robot (e.g. a new version of Chaos 2 or something) then that's fine :)

In case of flamethrowers being allowed, I'll remake my flaming bots in DSL3. Also still need to remake Vague Entity in DSL3.
Title: Re: GTM Robot Wars Series 1
Post by: Merrick on May 26, 2013, 07:05:24 AM
I would highly doubt that flamethrowers will be allowed.

Wham's looking for more 'British' Robot Wars style designs, and Robot Wars never allowed flamethrowers. I can imagine he'd keep it the same way here.

Anyway, I'm throwing my hat in the ring for support of this tournament. The first DSL3 tournament could be a lot of fun, and to any doubting it's success (*cough* Jonzu *cough*), I'm willing to bet Wham knows what he's doing here. He's done fine work so far.

@Conraaa : That's perfect!

I'm still in the process of making my entries (got a couple of good ones so far) as well as deciding which replicas will be entered into it aswell. On top of that I'm close to once more mastering the ol' ASE technique, so I might be able to add a couple of extra replicas into the fray (I'm somewhat close-ish to making Stinger, Suicidal Tendencies & 101). So hopefully i'll put sign ups live soonish :P For now, have fun playing around with designs, and also watch this space for any new custom components that will be allowed into the fray.

It's a reinforced perm so i think it should be ok wits weapon supports
Title: Re: GTM Robot Wars Series 1
Post by: AlexGRFan97 on May 29, 2013, 05:11:57 AM
That's not the point. When have you *ever* seen skirts that large on a real robot? Also, not enough weapon supports. You might have motor supports, but what is holding the disc up?
Title: Re: GTM Robot Wars Series 1
Post by: WhamettNuht on May 29, 2013, 05:28:28 AM
Sorry Mystic but I'll have to agree with the others. When building IRL, think real physics, not RA2 physics. For example, if you have a vertical spinner using a perm, think 'would that look right in real life?' the answer would be no as the disc would snap off within the first impact in real life. It would need some supports. Keep thinking about things like that.

Also guys, as I have posted in the AI thread, a new component will be allowed into the tournament:

These claws will be allowed to make way for crushers :) (The LW using it in the pic is my LW entry Pressure Point :P)

The required motor will also be available with it :)

Well, I'm probably not going to enter anymore. Made the best bot I've ever made, it was absolutely flawless. Very powerful hammer, good protection, brilliant drive, and all the batteries I needed. Took about a week to plan, and 45 minutes to build. I finally finished it, then I saved. I accidently clicked on an empty slot and the empty immediately said "heavyweight". I thought that was weird, so I checked on my perfect bot. GAME CRASHES :vista:. I'm going to take a break from RA2 for a while.

Try loading your bot again? That's a bug that happens when you don't create a chassis. If you try to load another bot in your game session, it just crashes. Your bot should be fine.

Gah... fine back to the drawing board

If it helps at all (and anybody else who's struggling with 'Robot Wars style' designs), I like to think the early part of my showcase is very much Robot Wars influenced. Perhaps looking at them may help understand the sort of feel that Wham is looking for in the entries to this.

(Of course, I could have no idea what I'm spouting)

Handful of examples;

I think the best bet with crushers is to have a normal BSG, but have the crusher starting in the closed position. That way, when the crusher is fired, it raises and comes down on the other robot, staying there.

I might be wrong though.

The LW has a static spike and has no way to self right. So I decided the high weight would work for the LW. But the mid wheels will probably happen if weight is an issue. Is the HW okay?

Whilst not explicitly banned, I'm going to double check. Would a HW spinner built to IRL restrictions (I.e 2 teeth maximum on the disc) be acceptable?

I have a whole bunch of potential bots for this, I could probably fill up half the bracket.

It's not going to be about specific 'bot types being banned, I think.

Wham would much rather have more variety than just Spinner vs Spinner vs Spinner vs Spinner banging about the place, I expect.

I'm still torn between a flipper and an axe. Flippers are awesome, and I think Wham's lowered the arena wall, but you don't see many axes in tournaments.....
