Battle Factory
« on: June 03, 2015, 04:27:07 PM »
Idea stolen from: https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php?topic=15334.0

Howdy everyone!  While Samurai Showdown winds down, I figured I'd get this up for discussion.  You can check that link there for the original ruleset; here's my take on it:

- Stock MW (May change to DSL if no one likes stock)
- Everyone enters 3 robots.  Team themes are encouraged but not mandatory.  Robots must display controlled movement to be accepted.
- I don't mind doing AIs, but I'm not very good at it, so if you want it done right, do it yourself.
- Matches will be held in the DSL Tournament Arena, hazards on.
- Each robot in a team will fight one robot from the opposing team, for a total of three fights per round.
- Before each match, each player will PM the order they'd like to use their robots in.  If they don't send the PM by a set deadline, their bot order will be randomized.
- The winning player will swap one robot from his team with one robot from the losing team.  Again, if they do not choose by a set deadline, the switch will be randomly selected.
- There will be a loser's bracket, because that should be fun.
- Standard building rules, i.e. no BFE or AAM or whatever other crazy nonsense.  No cheatbot components either.
- Matches with havoks will be rerun.  Havoks will not be shown unless they are particularly interesting.
- Ideally, there will be 16 entrants.
- I will not enter due to balancing issues.
And of course,
- For winning Samurai Showdown, one of 090901's bots may be 0.1 kg over the weight limit (399.1 kg).

So, any interest?  Also, is it okay to just steal the idea?

I disagree with the swapping bots idea, because people will troll by entering purposefully weak bots.

Although if everyone trolls I suppose the second half of the tournament will be a trainwreck of SFTW teams and it will be hilarious, but that will never happen.

Well, now I feel there is no reason for me to host Trios of Terror 2 anytime soon, if at all. I do plan on entering, once the swapping bots out rule is fixed since I agree with Naryar.

Or you can keep your swapping bots rule and say "no jokebots allowed".

stock mw... eh

also the incentive for last tournament's winner is very weak. 0.1-0.2 kg bonus only ?

allow him to have more than three bots maybe ? like four bots, and he chooses three of the four in each round, but the fourth bot is eliminated if it loses a battle, and he's back to three bots for the rest of the tourney ? so the fourth bot is kinda an ace in the hole, and it gives him a small advantage, but it can be easily removed.

When I read the ruleset for the original tournament, I thought the swapping bots thing would make for a suitably wacky gimmick.  Since that one didn't work out, I figured I'd do it myself.  I did steal the "each bot on the team fights one bot on the other team" rule from Trios of Terror, since I thought that was a good way to do team matches.

Even if people do enter troll teams, the winner would still have 2 good bots left, so they could still win their next match.  I could put in some kind of "no obviously low-quality entries" rule, if you think that would help (though it might be hard to judge).  I want to keep the swapping bots thing though, since that's the unique thing about this tournament (also because that's how it works in the Battle Factory in Pokemon, so if I change that, the name wouldn't make any sense.)

Well, now I feel there is no reason for me to host Trios of Terror 2 anytime soon, if at all.

The difference betwixt this and ToT is that ToT is more of a serious tournament, while this would be more of a stupid gimmick thing.  I don't think one would necessarily overshadow the other.

stock mw... eh

Weightclass and game version are up for debate; I just put that there to have something.  I'm not really a fan of IRL though, so if the game changes it'd most likely be to DSL-Standard.

EDIT:

also the incentive for last tournament's winner is very weak. 0.1-0.2 kg bonus only ?

It's a joke prize; not really meant to be useful at all.

Very interesting idea actually.  The battle factory in Pokemon uses teams of three, so that's why it's set up like it is.  I might use that for something, though.

I think I forgot to mention: this is intended to be a 16-spot tournament, but I doubt I'll get that many entries.

Well if you want to, you can set it to a lower limit if you really doubt it.

Might as well leave it for the time being; can't hurt to be hopeful.

In other news, I've been trying to come up with a way that I can enter this without unbalancing everything, and I haven't got anything.  I probably will not be entering because of this.

So... anyone else?  Should I change anything?  Should I just give up and cry?
