Title: Vertigo's Stock Showcase!
Post by: Vertigo on July 02, 2010, 01:08:15 PM
OK, I've got a DSL showcase, now I need a stock one
I've not had stock for like a year, I only re-downloaded it today, when I previously had it I didn't know about GTM, so all of my bots were pretty bad (I'm talking about pushbots with no weapons at all)

*Currently Un-Named*
DSA, 1 supervolt, 2 ddts with 4 razors on each, 2hp z-teks with shinies, 2 ramplates for frontal armour, 360KG
Please don't give me a lecture about building to the wieght limit, its only underweight because I really don't know what to do with 40KG
KO'd EMERGENCY in under 30secs, I need to get a better AI pack lol!

Where can I download v1.3? I only downloaded it once to get DSL, & nowI don't know where to get it

Yeah, it needs a wedge. Not too bad though.
I need to re-make it, the chasis is too small to even fit in another baseplate anchor

Ramplate isn't doing much
Title: Re: VERTIGO'S STOCK SHOWCASE!
Post by: Vertigo on July 02, 2010, 01:51:23 PM
It protects the chasis. What about all the DSL MW popups with tite sheets to protect the chasis.
Title: Re: VERTIGO'S STOCK SHOWCASE!
Post by: Naryar on July 02, 2010, 01:54:34 PM
It doesn't protects much... might be better to turn it 90 degrees so it protects more

Also, the chassis wedge is a bit steep.

If you want a better AI pack, go to http://www.starcore.gametechmods.com/ (http://www.starcore.gametechmods.com/) and download one (probably 2 or 3, i jumped in at 3 myself. There's a link round somewhere for v4 if you really want to dive in :P) There's instructions in the .rar if I remember right. (correct me if I am wrong:P)

Or you can get the PYS(?) AI pack too, but I don't know how difficult that is as I've never tried it.

Rotate the Ramplate horizontally should be about it.  Doesn't actually look too bad otherwise.

DSA, 4 hp z-teks with shinies, 2ddts with 7 razors on each, 2ddts with a 100cm extender & a smallwedge on each (the rear ones), 2 supervolts
I expected starcore to be much harder, this bot KO'd the vast majority of HW's that I fought it against

I have put on the 1.3 patch as said before, but how do I get the AI components?

Make the wedges longer and you and one wedge is about the same as two wedges right next to each other.

Now have longer wedges & 2 small wedges on the end of each ddt

I never had an AGOD on a stock burst before. o_O

Anyway, it looks quite good. You might want to redo the weapon system and the AGOD might go away. :D

I can't do that because if i did they would intersect each other, & the game doesn't allow you to do that

Title: Re: VERTIGO'S STOCK SHOWCASE!

Make the width of it shorter to minimize chassis space.

Make the width of it shorter to minimize chassis space.

How would that help him? Larger chassis = more HP and if he cant do anything with the weight it's better to keep the open space.
Title: Re: VERTIGO'S STOCK SHOWCASE!
Post by: 40757 on July 07, 2010, 04:13:38 PM
That much space won't save him from getting KOed. If anything, it's better to be a smaller target.
Title: Re: VERTIGO'S STOCK SHOWCASE!
Post by: Sage on July 07, 2010, 09:41:05 PM
It might be just enough, while you cant really be a smaller target with that little chassis tweak. Plus, wider is usually better. And the bot weighs more, making his wedges better.
Title: Re: VERTIGO'S STOCK SHOWCASE!
Post by: 40757 on July 07, 2010, 10:19:37 PM
It's not enough when the bots now are overloaded with weapons and feed off of any exposed chassis. It MAY happen but the chances of that are very very slim. These days, bots take a couple hits to a chassis and the fight is over so that little amount of HP wouldn't mean much. The weight statement would also be false because the weight is in the back forcing the wedges upwards.

Use black extenders, they have the same hp and are lighter
Title: Re: VERTIGO'S STOCK SHOWCASE!

Yes but the black extenders were facingin the wrong direction & they are really hard to rotate accurately

Are those wedges on an anchor?
Title: Re: VERTIGO'S STOCK SHOWCASE!

They are on a ddt, the ramplates are on an anchor

If were you, I would use anchor istead of snapper2.
Title: Re: VERTIGO'S STOCK SHOWCASE!
Post by: Vertigo on July 11, 2010, 03:06:00 AM
No because:
1) The snapper2s allow me to move the vs's so that they intersect other components
2) Burst motors make motors spin faster (apparently)

It is also works as srimech, right?
Title: Re: VERTIGO'S STOCK SHOWCASE!

The snappers don't work as a srimech, the vs's work as a srimech by themselves

Post by: Stagfish on July 11, 2010, 03:21:38 AM
Yes but the black extenders were facingin the wrong direction & they are really hard to rotate accurately

It's easy, black extenders are hexagonal prisms, meaning all you need to do is get the lightshining on the end of it and you can see each side perfectly.

OK, working on my first decent (hopefully) horizontal spinner
But its all going wrong - help please!

OK, I start off with two extenders off a Snapper2 as shown:
I then effe 3 HP Z-Teks onto the extenders. I then enter the practice area & return to the bot lab.
Look what it looks like now:
Why does it do this & how do I fix it?

Credits to whoever built absolute chaos for Snapper2 setup

Post by: Somebody on August 09, 2010, 05:15:17 PM
Infiniteinertia built Absolute Chaos.

And on a Snapper II, the back AP acts like a servo AP. It goes back to its starting position always. Attach the extender where you want it THEN rotate it.

I though he built it the same day that you came up with the same setup for ULTIMATUM or some other 36HS, giving him the right to enter it in ARBBC and BBEANS 5.
Title: Re: VERTIGO'S STOCK SHOWCASE!
Post by: Sage on August 15, 2010, 02:34:40 PM
So as most of you know my computer is dead. However, I dug out my old desktop from the garage, dusted it off, and started up my OLD version of RA2 :D. Skimming through my old bots, I found a nice bit of nostalgia...

Introducing, the very first 36HS ever built!

As you can see, the setup is more commonly known on the bot Absolute Chaos. This bot was built the day before... Just a plain box chassis, unlike Inf's airtight one on AC.

Apparently, SnapperII's make quite bad wedges because of weight distribution. DDT's tend to make better wedges than SnapperII's, but it's a lot to do with the angle.

EDIT: Hey, who changed the title of my showcase? It should be just 'VERTIGO'S STOCK SHOWCASE!'

You could remove the blades if you wanted to, you could get 20kg out of that. What I'd do is switch the weapon and wedge DDT's around, so the wedges are longer without protruding any further from the bot, with the weight distro being further forward, 'cause you'd have the razors further forward as well. And you could widen the wedges with the spare weight as well.

You probably can line your 4WD at the end of the bot. like i did on PitA 8 or FB did on the BBEANS5 champion.

Your wedges also would probably be better if closer to the front (plus less weight spent on extender work, and easier self-righting)

Oh and to be a nitpick (but good RA2 building IS nitpicking) rebuild the chassis so the front slope is angled 45 degrees and attach the ramplates directly to the chassis, so you save 10 kg.

the angle extenders dont seem necessary, also a lot of chassis size could be shaved for more frontal Armour

1) They are, because if I used the side attatchment points on extenders, even with effe, the HPZs wouldn't attatch
2) Not that much really, only the little back section behind the ddts
Title: Re: VERTIGO'S STOCK SHOWCASE!

wrong and wrong :P

you can use more then one plastic extender to easily replicate that setup without the need for the angles.

and there is a lot of space to be saved.. 2 of those DDT's could be added to plastic extenders on the Blue Snapper to allow you to halve that middle section and make the whole chassis a C shape.

thats how I would do it anyway :P

Yes, but that would make the same weight anyway

Don't know what I can do for front protection, tried lots of time but its difficult because the ddts stick out so much.

much better (wasnt so hard was it :P)

you could get frontal protection with an angled baseplate in the middle of the DDT's and a few extenders?

or redo the anchors part to include ramplate attaching like S13

You could probably rotate the snapper 180 degrees, have a 20cm extender with the side APs facing up, mount the t-connector off of that, attach the HPZs directly to the T connector. Then, attach another 20cm extender to the first one and put the plow there. Then, you'd get a more compact setup with better reach behind you.

Somewhat like a pitching machine, except it keeps them pinned on the plow. Right?

and I think if you used extenders instead of the tribar, you might save weight
Nvmd, that would kill the exactly 800 weight thing.

The weight would be distributed better.  Use a shorter extender on the snapper (assuming that's what you have your drive attached to) to attach the drive motors; I would suggest a single 20cm extender.

If you are not using the original max_sphere.gmf then it won't show up. I haven't looked as the modified GMF but it is either missing the gmf object altogether or it is bigger than the draw distance. The max sphere that you are most likely running into is the one built directly into the EXE (it doesn't have any visible collision mesh).

Ah, yeah, I just noticed. I tried something like that with Halestorm 4 and it really didn't work. I'm not sure why. Maybe there has to be a certain amount of weight between the wheels and the DDT's for them to be effective.
Title: Re: VERTIGO'S STOCK SHOWCASE!
Post by: Gigafrost on October 06, 2010, 05:25:44 PM
You could try to put those wedges on snappers and then the weapons on DDTS. Snappers are just lovely. All that weight for the frontal armor could also be replaced so you can juggle around with that extra weight. Hmm have you tried thinking about replacing those with those 10kg Blades? Or maybe one plow that spans the front? Not exactly necessary, just some other things to think about in case you want some extra weight. Trying to get those brain juices flowing.

Dare I ask what's up with the lawn mower blades on axles?

And an easy (although costly) way to improve wedges is to add ballast in the front of the wedge.  You could get weight by removing those lawn mower blades, or at least replacing the axles with baseplate anchors.

That's why stock is boring. You need to make 15 chassis rebuilds after having a good bot, and care so much about space efficiency, and spend hours stacking/getting frustrated because your snapper loading isn't working, and others.

Seism 13 was ahead of its time.  FB actually built it and showcased it long before BBEANS5, on the old Atari forums, back when he did a lot of building.  AFAIK there weren't any other popups with the solid row of 5-6 ram plates in front until after BBEANS5.

Anyways, the corners on your popup look exposed.  You should try to scoot the edge ram plates out so they cover the corners.  The corners always get hit first by HS's.

You should angle down your ramplates against HS. 45 degrees is a good value IMO.

I've bothered to make a compact, snapper loaded, stacked popup, and the wedges are rubbish.
Thats really annoying :P

3 Blacks (2 stacked)
4 ddts
4 HPZs with rubbers
4 Ramplates

Kept on trimming the chasis down & down, untill I got that. Didn't realise it looked like hot wheels untill I'd finished XD
Oh, and any advice on the wedges?

Nice work on the compactness, by the way. But only 8 razors?

Is there any way to guarantee good wedges, because I've never built a bot (despite all the glitches), that can get under both seism & R4?
Title: Re: VERTIGO'S STOCK SHOWCASE!
Post by: NFX on November 21, 2010, 09:31:16 AM
In truth, no. It's really much of a guessing game. If you angle the wedges so that the ends of the Small Wedge components are JUST  one or two clicks below the baseplate, then that helps, in my experience.

Title: Re: VERTIGO'S STOCK SHOWCASE!

The wedges might be fail because the ramplates are attached to the DDT as well. Which somehow makes the wedges worse.

Nice clean setup, but all the weights in the back, thus the wedge problem.. You would either need a stabilizer in the back to push down the wedges up front, or try re-arranging the chassis to put the wedge DDTs on the baseplate.

Love how you used DDTs in combination with Snappers to hold the wheels in place.
1 question though.... Did you have to rebuild that a few times over? Ive tried ideas like that before, and unless you constantly garage-and-back, the design can randomly destroy itself.
I take it, you had to do just that.

One on the left is a Psyc popup, that should tell you all you need to know about it :P
The one on the right is almost exactly the same as the one on the left, except it has only one black, a slightly elongated wedge (to allow for the baseplate anchor), and a ramplate.

Both have wedges on par with XZAI 2 & Mutiny II
Title: Re: VERTIGO'S STOCK SHOWCASE!

How does the one with 1 battery do in the damage department?  Since it's severely underpowered and all.

I don't think sacrificing a battery for a ram plate is worth it, since the chassis corners are still exposed, which is the part that gets hit most often.
Title: Re: VERTIGO'S STOCK SHOWCASE!
Post by: FOTEPX on December 26, 2010, 09:23:42 PM
Smallen down the chassis, Snapper Load the DDT off, place the baseplate extender in the slot where the DDt's hinge used to be, and attach the ramplate there via whatever means. If that's allready done, I'd recommend losing razors instead of a battery.

what is this i dont even

You are SEVERELY underestimating the size of baseplate anchors if you think one will fit in the hinge slot in a DDT.  And obviously know nothing about how collision mesh works.  Also, explain how that chassis can be made any smaller, much less get 20 kgs out of it.

Trading razors for a ramplate instead of a battery is better advice (at least it's POSSIBLE), but I still wouldn't do it.  You would need to downgrade to 4 razors and the corners of the chassis would still be exposed.

Wedge-y looks very, very clean. I like it. Barricade seems better with a wider, double-rack setup. You could angle the lower rack downward, and push the upper anchor a bit inward so all of the weapons hit simultaneously.

It's pretty much the same thing, as both racks still hit simultaneously. What I meant was removing your current lowest rack and angling the middle rack a notch or two downwards, and push the top rack inward a little, then add the rest of the weapons. That at least makes it more annoying against side hammers and wide HSes.

Awesome vid, Vertigo.

more people should make RA2 vids in their showcase :) also try and upload at least 480 vids to youtube. all you need to do is import your vid to windows movie maker and when you can select to quality it saves the video as, as long as you use Fraps to record.
I take it that Fraps is free. right?
Thanks

The trial of fraps is free, but it only records for 30 seconds, so you have to film a full legnth match in six parts (start -stop, start-stop etc.)

Wegame (what I used), is completely free though

The normal version of FRAPS is something like $30, IIRC. Which I probably don't. If you want it free, Noodle posted a link to a Piratebay download somewhere, and I got it from that, but I had to run an antivirus scan afterwards. Just a precaution, but it did find one or two minor infections.

I've been trying to persuade people to be more original, but they just stick to what they know because they know it's effective.

Try swapping the positions of the HPZs and Z-Teks so it has a faster spinup time (theoretically, of course).

When has theory ever had anything to do with RA2?

I tried it, but it had no effect, all it did was move the discs closer to each other (thus protecting the chasis less)

1) The control board is on top of the black

It looked like it was inside.

But of course, it cant go in my HW Space team, as I already have a VS.

3) Nope, not at all, I used axle loading

So would you mind explaining it a bit more, please?

Should still work if that middle one is there. Might even be slightly more effective since it would have a larger surface area to keep bots onto, making it harder for bots to slide of and therefore the weapon more effective.

RAD drive and weapon motor, Snapper2 wedge, Nifty

Deals a fair amount of damage, due to the 57kg of weapons :P

Yes, there it an uneven setup, but at the speed the RAD spins, it doesn't cause it to vibrate at all

Probably would be better if you could angle the weapon rack a notch upwards. And you can even downgrade to shinies and remove a pink so you can add 2 maces on the sides (that is, if you have 2 kg free).

4 pinks is dumb.

you can still get a short chassis with a black if you stack the battery and it should be around the same weight.

Might either want to angle the centre two axes inward, or use two baseplates for the weapons.

Less drive!

Make the chassis slightly bigger for slightly more HP?
At first I tried to get a 29kg chassis that would make it exactly 249.0, the first chassis I made that could contain all components and stay underweight was 28.8
Every slight change I made would usually bring it overweight, and by the time I got that chassis I was so fed up of chassis trimming I just built the thing :P

You're right though, would be better at 249.0 as minimal a change as it might be, may try that again when I can be bothered XD

You sure you can't use that weight in better ways ?

If the wedges are THAT bad, then I guess a ballast wouldn't hurt.

Nice to see you building again, Vert. =) It doesn't look too bad, but I might want to try improving the wedges somehow. Seems this would suffer from Bounty Hunter Syndrome, and that would undermine the whole bot, I think.

Exactly what I thought, and it did. The only reason I'm using ballast is because somehow it makes the wedges on par with Mutiny 2, which seems pretty decent for a MW VS

And the main reason I've touched RA2 is because finally I have the time. Eruption's been a pain ever since Worthing and only now is it actually 'finished'. :P
