Hey everybody, I've been playing RA2 for awhile now, and you guys have really helped me become a decent builder. So I eventually thought some of my bots were good enough to post here, and here they are (please excuse the attempt at splashes):
Gingebot:
Megaultraawesomebot:
Popsicle:
Almost: (has a 36hs off of 1 servo ever been done before?)
I like popups, in case you couldn't tell. All the popups have really good wedges, especially Popsicle.
I'm looking forward to what you guys think!
-
Uh, it's good to include a bot on your first post.
-
@Stagfish: Yeah, sorry about that... I thought I was supposed to make the topic then post stuff... sorry!
-
You rival VB for best 1st bots ever! Awesome!
-
Wow, those bots are better than mine are now, lol :P
I <3 stock popups too. (Well, not in DSL.)
-
I feel old, I should start making stock bots again.
-
I feel old, I should start making stock bots again.
You feel old, you are only 12
-
Love your name, love your bots, hate your pic.
-
About the pic, it was supposed to be a .gif of Isaac Brock (the Modest Mouse front man) flopping his head around and shooting laser vision. It works fine on my computer, but it's not working as my picture... any tips?
-
It's best to use a .gif that is working when you preview it on google images.
-

That, or just use a program that makes .gifs
Like Photoshop, Flash, heck, even Gif Construction Set.
-
Cool bots, yo. I really like Almost and Popsicle (especially Popsicle's skin) ,looks sweet.
But it is very obvious you have been lurking. Agree with GK on this one. I hope you stay. You could become one of the stock masters in no time.
-
I feel old, I should start making stock bots again.
You feel old, you are only 12
It makes me feel old because my bots are outdated
-
Well someone's been lurking.
You've obviously got axle loading down (better than I have actually), and I think Sage has done a 36hs off a single servo before (he's done a 36hs off of basically everything >.>).
It's rare that someone walks in and is one of the better builders here, but you've done it. Good job :D
-
I did it, just never showcased. the setup was the same as black and blue, just with a servo, so I didn't think it was worth it. Not because I was too lazy to put on the weapons or anything >.>
Awesome first bots. The two middle ones are OKAY but the other two (the first popup and the HS) were impressive.
-
The first and last bots are nicely done! :D
And that's some lurking you did. O_O
Is the HS stable?
-
Welcome to the forums. Nice showcase so far. Keep up the great work. I hope to see you enter some tournaments in the future. :D
-
Nice lurk. ;)
Excellent first bots, as well. Makes me feel slightly inadequate. =D
-
@ Pwnator: Yeah, Almost actually drives really well and doesn't flop around too much. I had the maces on the bottom extenders facing sideways, but they kept making the bot bounce, and when I angled them toward the center of the bot, boom! It was suddenly stable.
Also, I still can't get my .gif avatar working. Is there a file size limit or something? It works fine when I look at it in windows picture and fax viewer, and GIMP (the program I made it in), but it doesn't seem to want to work here...
-

According to the image properties(lolrightclick) it says your avi is a .jpg file, and not a .gif.
That might be the problem.
-
Hmmm... that's really weird. When I go to the upload an avatar button in the forum profile thing and select the the file, it says the file name with a .gif on the end. Does the .gif have to be a square, or under a certain size limit?
-
What's the full name of the file? 'Cause I had a file named "example...lol", and it got saved as a .LOL file.
-
lawl.
-
Wow 0_0 Nice bots! Welcome to Gametechmods by the way.
-
It's called LaserVisionShake.gif
I dunno if that affects anything. Maybe I should try getting rid of the capital letters.
-

I don't think that's the problem, then. I know that you can save a .gif file as either grayscale or 16-bit, and you can save it as an animation, or you can save it as interlaced...
I think what you have to do, is Save As, call it whatever, then select Save as Animation, and on the next bit, make sure Loop forever is ticked, Interlaced is NOT ticked, and make the delay between frames around 100 milliseconds. My avatar uses 150 millisecond delays.
Whereabouts are you importing it from?
-
You rival VB for best 1st bots ever! Awesome!
I say he's got me beat :rage
Really nice first bots.
-
Are you sure that it doesn't accidentally have 2 extensions for your avatar? Something like "LaserVisionShake.gif.jpeg" is a common mistake especially when people aren't aware that Microsoft hides known extensions (if this default setting is your problem, it would read "LaserVisionShake.gif" in windows explorer (unless you've changed this setting)).
Gingebot: Having the battery and motors like that reminds me of TyranT, the first version of my BBEANS 5 entry. I ended up changing this so that the bot could self-right and drive on its rear end. With your current setup, I would try fitting it between the inner motors. I think your battle axes would protect the partially bulging sides.
Megaultraawesomebot: Wedges only have 100HP so recommend switching to a weapon (all but razor tips have 1000HP). If you need more weight (for something like 12kg axe heads), change the chassis shape so that inner points aren't there. You have a 12 point chassis right now and I'm recommending to make it 10 points to save weight.
Popsicle: The razors don't look like they have much reach where their at now. If you moved the middle chassis point a little forward, the weapon DDTs could be moved forward and the back could be made flat (prevents getting stuck on rear end).
Almost: I don't have any comments ATM.
Lurker or not, your doing pretty good. The bots are well-built and your not terrible at splashes (at least you bothered to post the weight unlike some people).
-
Better at splashes than me and I've been here 2 years XD
Problem is I never tried though ;)
-
It's good to see skilled newcomers.
And i like Popsicle, hooray for true popup hybrid
-
Great first bots. It's good to see skilled newcomers. :D
Keep it up and show us some great bots.
-
I've been working on this new bot here, but it didn't turn out as well as I had planned. The wedges aren't nearly good enough because they only get under Neglected Waterbug about 4 out of 10 times. And a popup without a good wedge might as well be SFTW. The weapon setup and half the drive are attached to a Snapper 2 in between the batteries.
The idea was to make an overpowered popup that can dish out the 1 hit KOs. In reality it likes to get 2 hit KOs, if it can get under the other bot. And yeah, it drives straight (I was surprised). The only thing I actually like about this bot is the way the ramplates are stacked in the front, cause it looks really cool.
It has:
3 Supervolts (1 on left, 2 on right to balance the weird drive setup)
9 Razor Tips (3 on each weapon DDT, I wanted more but the 7 part in a row limit killed that idea)
Oh yeah, thank you Trovaner for the tips, I changed Megaultraawesomebot's wedge armor to maces, and I think I'm going to keep the other bots the same, but I'll keep those ideas in mind for future bots.
-
<333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333
-
3 DDTs for weapon ? Well it's uncommon to see 3 (WEAPON ONES, no need to post a Pysc popup to prove me wrong). Usually it's 1, 2 or 4 but 3...
It looks good anyway.
-
Have you attached the ramplates on to the wedge extender? 'Cause that's a bad idea, for some reason.
-
@NFX:
Nope, they're all attached to separate baseplate anchors. I learned not to attach anything to the wedges when I made a Heavyweight popup with all the armor attached to the wedge extenders (it was actually a REALLY old version of Megaultraawesomebot). It had trouble getting under some Middleweight bots. I thought that adding more weight to the wedges would make them better, but we know this isn't true. Does anyone have a genuine reason as to why this is?
-
Nope. I thought it would make it better, but it somehow doesn't. And how did you manage to stack the ramplates like you did? That's some good work there. =)
And I don't really go for overcomplicated snapper setups, mostly because I end up getting raped by the rule of 7. I don't think that the weapons have a particularly good reach like that either, maybe you should try attaching all the drive onto one snapper, and put the weapons DDTs on the baseplate, and tweak the chassis around that.
-
Pretty sweet. You stacked those ramplates in the front with baseplates? Nice job.

The whole thing is off a Snapper II?
Wow, just wow.
Its also a VERY nice use of the space.

Not a Snapper II, it's a Snapper 2. I don't believe in the AI components, mainly Snapper IIs.

Get the AI parts, yo.
The EMERGENCY-Hax-wedges are so fun <3

May I ask why?
-
Snapper IIs aren't really good for anything but making small bots with lots of stuff eFFe'd on. The problem is, those bots are never as stable or as wedgey as other bots. I don't mind Snapper IIs on other types of bots, but for popups (which are my favorite) I like them to be nice 'n' stable. Also, using non-AI parts gives a fun challenge.

Not necessarily true, some bots are set up on blue snappers and have excellent wedges, like Pwn's Hot Wheels.
-
Wow. Its gonna take me a looong time before I get as good as you.
-
This guy just blows my mind with both his knowledge and skill. How long did you lurk?

Long enough to go from (close your eyes now before they start to bleed!) this:
To the bots previously posted.
*Note: that bot was the second working bot I made, and I thought it was great at the time. I still can't thank you guys here at GTM enough, especially the BeetleBros for their tutorials.
Oh yeah, and before I forget again, I have two questions that have been bothering me.
1. Which is better, 2 Niftys or 1 Supervolt?
2. Why does the motto for the Borg team in Starcore say "Resistance IF futile" instead of "Resistance IS futile"?
-
supervolt all the way.
How did you learn to snapper load?
-
Supervolt weighs less, for the same voltage, and can fit in a lower chassis.
-
How did you learn to snapper load?
From you o' course
I stumbled upon your snapper loading tutorial on youtube in my first weeks playing RA2 when I was looking for tutorials, because I was frustrated that mine didn't even drive correctly and I needed to see how a functional bot worked. At the time I had no idea what was going on in the video, and I assumed that the Snapper IIs in the video were some sort of cheat part, because I had never seen them in the game before. The video barely registered with my mind until I got better at the game and remembered the video. I found the video again, and I tried it using a Snapper 2 instead of a Snapper II and it worked... The End.
So, um, basically...
Thank you very much Sage.
-
Hah, thought so. Well you're welcome! Looks like you put it to good use.
-
great to see a skilled new builder around, now all you need is your own unique style  .
EDIT: +1 rep, can't believe nobody gave you any yet.
-
2. Why does the motto for the Borg team in Starcore say "Resistance IF futile" instead of "Resistance IS futile"?
That would be a typo that in 6+ years I am not aware of anyone ever mentioning.

Lol@6+Year typo
My guess is that everyone just read it as a correct version, despite it being incorrect.

Amazing bots. I shall now go rot in a corner.
-
I made a new bot.
It's kind of a juggler-true popup hybrid thing called Frankendoodle from one of my favorite episodes of Spongebob, just cause. It was inspired by Clickbeetle's Backyard Gut-Ripper. It's a decent bot, and it's really fun to play around with. The only problem is that the wedges are kinda inconsistent, because when the spinners are spinning at different speeds (which happens when I turn too fast), it bounces a little bit. When it's stable, the wedges do work pretty well, and it can get under Rabid Pit Bull. It also does decently against hs's. Advice is more than welcome.
-
Awesome name is awesome.
Awesomer bot is awesomer.
That's a pretty sweet setup you got there. But I think 4WD and a single popup DDT would be better for that.
-
pretty sure it's 4WD Pwn.
looks nice.
-
'Tis 4 wheel drive indeed.
-
Crap. Overlooked the stats again. I suck. ;_;
Also, if your bot's a bit bouncy, blame the maces. For some reason they always bounce when on a non-horizontal spinner.
-

I knew that it was wrong, I just didn't think it was really worth mentioning. ;)
And I was wondering if you'd Snapper'd the weapon motors on as well, because that does sometimes make them bounce.
-
Quick! Someone make a Doodlebob Pikabob! :gawe:

Meh, I failed at trying.

-
Is this the first juggler/popup hybrid?
Regardless, it's a cool bot. Might be a bit too short though. Short bots tend to tip over backwards and have worse wedges.
And yeah, the bouncing is probably because of the maces, and because the spinners are on burst motors. Both of those things can cause bounciness.
-
Can I just ask, how did you snap the drive motors on? 'Cause if you take a Snapper2 with an extender mounted perpendicular to the shafty bit, you can't attach a motor onto there, I'm sure of it.
-
You can. The snapper isn't raised, so the arm is facing upwards. Load the arm and hover an extender facing sideways and you can figure out the rest.
-

Right......snapper loading confuses me. =P
-
You can't attach Stock and most DSL motors if their collision mesh touches the walls of the chassis.
-
@Clickbeetle:
sweet you commented on my bot It would be better if it were longer, I just don't really have the weight... I could redesign the whole thing but then it would be a different bot. I tried a version with longer wedges but then I didn't have enough weight to stick out the popup weapons enough. When I put them at the lengths they are at now, even though the wedges weren't as long as the other version, the forward weight of the razor tips balanced the bot more and put more pressure on the wedges. And about the bouncing, should I change the maces to a different weapon? I can't really think of a better weapon, because iron spikes stick out too much and they don't protect the disc, and razor tips are too fragile.
It looks there's no more confusion about the setup, but here are some pictures of it just in case:
Oh yeah, and while experimenting with the design to see if it would work I got this really weird DDT stack by accident. Has anyone done this before? I thought it'd be kinda cool if someone got this to happen on both sides, then it could be a cool looking bot with angled DDT wedges...

This is why the eFFe glitch is awesome.
You can fit a crap-load of weapons/extenders/motors in the smallest of spaces.
