Title: They Won't Be Much... G2geo94's Showcase
Post by: g2geo94 on May 27, 2011, 01:00:46 PM
After a bit of browsing around, I decided my best luck will be to just show how much of a newb I am. xP
First, good bot of mine:
Overview. Decided to name it after my favorite penguin. Might be adding some custom decals if I get an image creativity spark.

And the components view:

No glitches or anything "really neat" that gets talked about on this forum. Looking forward to all reasonable criticisms.

Right, welcome to the forums!

As for your bot:
 - Never use car steering
 - Use shiny hubs as a general rule of thumb
 - Razors, irons and maces are the only good weapons
 - Never use 4WD unless 4WD HPZ
 - Only extenders you should try to use are round ones

And you might want to download the AI components :D

Hello, welcome to GTM.
I only have 1 piece of advice. Listen to advice and follow it.
Now, simply wait for the bombardment of generic newb advice.
EDIT: Never is a bit over the top Vertigo, 4WD HPZ+Z-Tek can be good.

Oh, and this is the simplest effective piece of advice you'll ever be given:

KISS (Keep it simple, stupid)

Hahahaha That thing is a beast!  XD

There is tons of advice to give... My tidbit is that you should try your best to build with components outside the chassis and keep the chassis as small as possible.

Think of the chassis as the heart of your robot.  Once the heart is destroyed the bot is done... but components can be destroyed and the bot can still soldier on and fight.

Keeping things like your drive motors and weapon motors outside the chassis is actually a good idea (for RA2 at least.  I know it is not realistic at all... but that is how the game is in terms of being effective.)

These rules do not apply to popup bots though... you will learn about those later.

Welcome to the forum!

keep the chassis as slow as possible.
Typo much?
Have you read the beetlebros tutorials?

Grrrrrr..... only you would notice that in the 20 seconds that it was up before I edited it.   *shakes fist*

EDIT:  Sooo... yeah... as S_M pointed out on the next post... I am dragging this showcase into off topic land.  Here is some more advice ^-^   Don't click on any of the armor selections when you build a chassis... if you leave it alone you will get DSA armor  (that means Double Strength Aluminum).  It is Super-Effective. Charizard go!   :p

Wow, too much off topic.

Hello! Love the looks of that thing. But:

You have almost 200 kgs to use.

HP Z-Tek drive would be good.

Use razors on hammers, and lots of them.

Unless it's the 140 cm version, use round extenders.

A wedge on a burst motor would be nice to have.

So would castor armor.

Try to add another hammer motor.

Shiny wheels are one of the best wheel choices, along with rubbers and slipperbottoms.

Try to cut down on empty space.

2 Blacks would power this thing nicely.

Also, I just noticed. Why are there ramplates on the preview picture, but none right now? Bah, with that much weight left, ramplates would be pathetic compared to castors anyway...

I have a feeling this newbie will in a few days will match my buliding skill. I'm Just saying.

Depends on who is willing to learn.

*Logs out to read his introduction in the New Member Board*
Yeah, I was also surprised when I was shown GTM.

Alright, after taking into account the advice that I could, I've made a number of changes. As for that mishap in the original post about the preview picture, well I hadn't taken a new preview since the post (ramplates were an idea I had, but had then decided to get rid of them.)
Anyways, new pictures:
Over:

And inside:

Decided since adding the ZTeks I had so much more space in the back, I'd put a nice back weapon.

You don't need those wheel guards.

Change the drive motors to the HP version.

You also don't need that bracket wedge on top or the back. Change the one in front to a small wedge and mount it on a Burst Motor. Heck, with around 230 kgs, you should get two.

Try eating up all 800 kgs.

That's not enough weapons. Put some more by using the side attachment points on extenders.

Castor armor would be cool.

Otherwise, it looks awesome.

OK, just learned what Castor armor is, but I'm confused as to how I should be going about adding it. Is there a mod that I'm missing, or a secret glitch I don't yet know about? I mean, I'm assuming that "Castor Armor" is in fact a balance castor, right?

There's no fancy ways to attach it, take a balance caster and mount it so it's sticking out a bit around the area you need to protect, like the front. The 5cm ones are almost completely useless unless you do it up a wedge like Bounty Hunter and PITA4, 10cm and 15cm are most commonly used either for frontal protection or as gut ripper protection. Keep in mind that balance casters are heavy and will eat up a ton of weight very quickly.

Also you can raise them by moving the mouse while holding Ctrl.

You may want to make a new bot with a smaller chassis and more weapons. Hammer bots are cool, but the weakest type.

Shrink your chassis and then stuff it with parts like this to the weight limit.

Sad, but True.

This guy is new to RA2, and ACAMS shows off how much potential a robot can have.
Awesome.
