Title: smashysmashy's crapcase
Post by: smashysmashy on July 09, 2011, 01:42:38 PM
Ok.... As this is my first actually successful bot so far (lol) I decided I'd show it to everyone else. This is my MW flipper called Alius. Its flipper is a bracket wedge powered by a DDT burst motor. Its wedge is on Snapper 2s that 'flip' downwards to give it better leverage. Its armour is DSA and the power comes from a black and two pinks. The two wheel drive is powered by two regular Z-teks with slipperbottoms.

(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/74814Alius 1.png)

If anyone's wondering about the name, I made a HW flipper with two bracket wedges called Guide to the Galaxy. It sucked. I wanted to make a MW based on it, and I was unsure about the name, so turned to my Latin textbook next to me, I looked in the dictionary and 'alius' is Latin for another or other. This also fit in with my team's alien gimmick, and so Alius was born.

Any thoughts?

You don't need two showcases. Just stick with the one.

Anyway, the bot looks cool, but it's underweight and needs weapons. You only need 1 black, basically, and you don't want to ever use Pinks except on Antweights and Beetleweights.

Good job with DSA, and switch to HP-Z tek drive with rubber wheels. Oh, and change the snapper to a DDT. If you don't have enough weight for all this, use shinies instead of rubbers.

By the way, could you crop your images?

You need the latest patch to fix your graphics. 1DDT isn't very powerful, try and get 2 on there.
You may wish to look at the Rupt glitch. (Search the RA2 wiki)

Yeah I've seen that one before. I've tried various incarnations but it failed, so I gave up with it.

As you can see, it's now a HW, but with non-exposed wheels, HP Z-teks, A hammer, 2 blacks and the wedges are now DDT's. What do you think?

When I said crop, I meant shrink the size of the picture so it's just like that, but no white.

Anyway, the bot is underweight. Heavyweights can go up to 800 kgs, so you should take advantage of it. That bracket wedge isn't helping either, stick with the plain wedges. Also, square extenders are no different than round ones statistic-wise, they're just heavier. Shrink the chassis as much as you can and change the hammer weapons to razors - lots of them. Change the wheels to shinies and put Caster armor (https://gametechmods.com/RA2wiki/index.php?title=Caster_armor) on it.

Can it self-right?

Hmm... so Alius flips up with the DDT while the Snappers flip downwards?  That's an interesting way to build a flipper, I might have to try it.

Edit: I deleted your old showcase since you made it by accident and it didn't have any new bots in it.

Thanks, click. I took the idea from Wheely Big Cheese from Robot Wars

BTW, Bob. Caster Armour? I've heard it mentioned before but I've never known how to attach or use it. Help?

The bot that lost to a tyre, lol

Anyway, innovative bot, I like the concept, but you should probably ditch the hammer and have 4 DDT flippers

Alius III

The wedge beats EMERGENCY's wedge, so I'm pretty happy with that.

Shrink the chassis so there's less empty space, give the chassis a wedge, these things should get it down to a MW.
I'll let the more experienced builders give you some better tips

Try to make the robot as compact as possible, for a start try stacking the black batts

Just to show you what can be made for a MW flipper:

Jolly good Flipper there.

Anyway, use DSA. That should boost it down to MW I think. Just ignore the armour tag while building it. You'll have to remake it, but it is worth it.

No, I'm just using it as an example as to what you should aim for, that bot uses:
 - Snapper Loading
 - EFFE
 - Stacking
 - Burst Enhancement

For now, I would suggest just trying to stack a black batt

get rid of two blacks-

So at most, he only needs to remove 1.

Servos use more weight.
Snappers are the ay to go.
And eFFe-ing your motors/parts can let you have multiple things in the same space. And it also can sve you a lot of weight in the long run.
Like so:
Oh, and this thing easily hits around 700-1000(-ish)

What J said, however, it's worth noting that Servos can come in handy for bots requiring more stability (such as some spinners)

Yea, Servos are a little harder to eFFe with, but they offer more stability. They also weigh the most.
Snappers let you very easily eFFe things, but can be a little less stable. Especially the SnapperIIs.

Sage, Clickbeetle, or Scrap Daddy (they're my favourite bot builders in GTM).

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooo...

On your newest bot: I dunno where other people are getting this from, but it does look like you know how to eFFe glitch (just look at how the spikes are attached guys >.>). What you really need to do is learn how to shrink and manage your chassis better. When building your chassis, first have an idea of what components you are going to put in the bot, and then design a chassis to fit those components as tight as you can. The reason why Sage, Scrap and Click can fit so many components in is because they know exactly what they're going to build before they build it, and design their chassis accordingly.

You'll probably end up having to re-do your chassis numerous times to get it perfect (expand some sections, shrink others), but I highly recommend you take the time to do this.

On step 2 of chassis design, when choosing the height of the chassis, move the slider all the way to the bottom. Then, raise it up by only 5 notches. This will give you just enought height to fit an HPZtek, and make the bot invertible with shiny hub wheels. You're wasting tons of weight on the chassis at the moment, and trimming it off will help you fit in more components.

Rotivator III: 4hp Z-teks (2 on servos), Effe'd, Just under the weight limit. Yes, the chassis could be squashed a bit, but I was in a rush.

Wow, big jump in building level!

Nicely done with the weight limit. As you said, the chassis could be minimized. Shrink it, get rid of the plow, change the irons to maces, and change the wheels to shinies. If good enough, you could get 36 maces on it. Do you have the Snapper II? The blue one? If so, you could use 'em to save alotta weight and stack a black once you get really good.

Could you apply snapper loading anywhere to further shrink the chassis? And the chassis doesn't have to be a square, make it any shape you want to minimise weight. For example, Wedgecutter (https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php/topic,7401.15.html) has an extra bit at the back for a black, my more recent designs have a space at the back of a snapper for snapper loading.

Try redbirds for drive, VSes don't need to be fast.

Hope this helped.

HS's don't need to be fast. VS needs good drive to punt the opponent a fair distance. But you need to be sure you have the stability not to tip over forwards on the impact.

If you have the weight, but the DDT wedge is priority. No matter how good the drive is, if it can't get under anything then you're screwed.
Title: Re: smashysmashy's showcase
Post by: NFX on July 30, 2011, 07:25:33 AM
A VS does need good drive either way, as the opponent will be rushing into your weaponry, and if you're sitting still, the opponent's force will all be transferred into your weapons, and your robot will start to rotate upwards as a result of Newton's Second Law. One of the rare instances where RA2 physics corresponds to IRL physics.

^ lol clearly shows you haven't built a proper VS yet

You're clearly underestimating the weight lost by just attaching that DDT wedge system. The drive and stability are ALWAYS a priority, then the weapon system, then the wedge. If the wedge sucks, that's pretty much a couple of losses against popups and wammers only. A Snapper II-wedged VS can still take on hammers and FSes.
Title: Re: smashysmashy's showcase
Post by: Badger on July 30, 2011, 07:36:55 AM
True, but most bots these days are either HSes, which will most likely knock off the discs or the HPzs, or the Extenders holding them up, or popups. ;)

I suppose I know diddly-squat about stock HSes, I only make MW and LW HSes.
Title: Re: smashysmashy's showcase
Post by: Pwnator on July 30, 2011, 07:58:30 AM
Which is why you need to focus on the drive and stability first. VSes don't need a wedge to lift HSes up, but they do need good drive. And if the VS misses, it needs to make sure it can properly turn without the HS getting to its vital regions. A VS without both is either a glass cannon (like chained VSes) or just terribly built.

No, he's saying C.A.T is a HW version of SFTW.
Anyways, sparkeys and LRA2's bots were worse.
LRA2 maybe, but Sparkey's bots aren't bad.

Thanks for your help, Naryar, but TRB may not be the most experienced or best builder out there; but he's still worth listening to.

And btw, since you've built the only juggler that's wve won BBEANS; are jugglers effective in stock and are the any tips to make a good one (lol, sorry for sounding an idiot by asking )?

EDIT: Most of the spam was by Garvin anyway
In stock, just ignore me. Unless you're making a MW HS. Than listen. A bit. Naryar knows his stuff, he can help more.

for an IRL-style bot it's not terrible. I would use rubber or mini wheels (lower ground clearance to more easily get under bots), and at least Snapper2 wedges, as Snapper IIs aren't good wedge choices at all.

On a VS, Irons are by far the best, maces are pretty much worthless. There is such a high risk of AGOD and screwing up your bot's balance. I would strongly recommend using irons instead of maces, even if you are going for realism.

You could shrink the chassis a little, but I don't see what it would get you. Is it invertible?

And you only need a nifty for 2 HPzs, IIRC.

Oh, and try to use Irons/Axes

1. It's invertible.
2. A nifty? Ok.
3. I'll try Irons with the less weight of a Nifty.

You can save weight on the drive by making your anchor off-center and use 2 sideways 20cms. You'll have weight for a caster, although that's pretty much up to you.

I dun goofed.

Also, if you're doing the extender setup that Pwn suggested, try to move the baseplate anchor a bit to the left or right to centralize the drive motors, because the setup is slightly off balance. (I'm bad at explaining)

You don't need that sort of drive. RAD drive will be fine, and it will allow you to spend an extra 28kg on weaponry. If you can save another 8kg somewhere, probably through chassis tightening, you could add 12 irons/maces on.

Attach the weapon motors outside the chassis, then shrink the chassis.

Like so (Don't do my drive setup, though. That sucks.):

Try and only use 1 snapper, with some handy-dandy extender/eFFe work. Then you can all MOAR snowplows.

Yes. Like a T or Y connector? And what would I do with the weight? Ramplate? Snowplow?

The side attachment point of a round extender. Any color, but preferably red. A snowplow would do fine for protection.

Have the snapper to one side in the chassis and have an extender coming off it with motors

   EEE S
   Z Z

With e being the extender (only one)
S = snapper and z is ztek :P

IRL-Realistic
The two middle flippers intersect the two outer flippers.
And Blue snappers aren't that good for flipping, they're weaker than green snappers, but use more battery power.

Well that's even less realistic.
You don't see any small wedge-spam in real life, do you?
Bit under-powered by the way, 1 moar nifty ought to put it at full power, if your willing to extend the chassis and maybe downgrade the armor.

2 blacks and a Nifty on a MW? Oh boy...

325 + 325 + 100 + 100 = 825 (Snapper II's don't fire), so a black and a purple is the bare minimum. Two blacks is decent to let it last a fair time into the match.

Nicely built. =)

Would probably work better if the Nifty was positioned between the two drive motors, that'd probably save you a bit of chassis weight, and provide quicker turning. You could take a look at Death By Purple 3 in my showcase to see what you could get away with when it comes to this kind of LW HS design.

Also, why did you make it asymmetrical? The drive is better wider to give a faster turning speed.

He means why is the Nifty off to one side and the Snapper is on the other side rather than in-line between the drive motors.

I like it personally.  It helps set that bot apart from the crowd of generic LW HS, and is still an efficient setup.

But if he had the snapper in the middle he could use up the last weight with a razor tip. Yes it's efficient, but all it does is sacrifice turning ability.

Anyway, back to stock. I was going to try to surprise you all, and enter my first BOTM for September, in a weightclass I've never built in before and a Mod I haven't used for god-knows-how-long. But I started two days AFTER the deadline closed, and I only realised after finishing the bot. Derp. I had a background ready and everything.

As you can see, it's predominantly purple. The bot was called Machine Head, a reference to Deep Purple. :3

As for the bot, it's a 1 pink and DSA concoction, and I'm really happy with it, considering I haven't gone as far as touch Stock for a long time.

I suggest testing against:

Mini - Flaming Whizzer
Mini - Backyard Ripper
Mini - Coal Miner
Mini - RPB
Mini - Fury

I have newer versions of Mini - RPG and Mini - Backyard Ripper that aren't released yet, both have had their armour upgraded from plastic to DSA.

They are probably some of the best AW's in the pack and Mini - Flaming Whizzer recently won one of my display tournaments against AW's from Stock mini's AI and Starcore AI.

If Ian is cool with it, it would be pretty awesome if I had the bot, so yes please.    Also, without testing it, would using plastic armour (the only thing I can think of to shed weight) be worth it to gain another ant? Assuming it frees up enough weight?

DP. Status report. Mini - Flaming Whizzer and Mini - Backyard Ripper beaten, along with a few others. The bot lasts well; the irons are strong, the extenders are pretty out of reach, and the chassis hardly ever gets touched. One thing I have noticed (which was pretty obvious) is that the power limits it greatly. It has a great amount of damage and power in the first few jousts, but after that it fades away. If the bot isn't dead by a minute, you're stuffed. So pretty much all of the wins were by de-weaponing the other bot, then not having enough poke to finish it off, and then winning by points.

While rebuilding, naturally my low attention span ran out and I started messing with the extender work. I did what 09 said because Plastic alone didn't suffice, but I messed around a little more. I managed to find this setup, all off one axle and without the Rule of 7. It won't be surprising to me if you've already found this, but I thought it was pretty cool.

Total extender weight: 10 kgs.

I'm really sorry about the irons, but 20cm and razors were not enough and 40cm and razors were too far. Not to mention the wedge is worse than crap.

By the way, the 2 stacked blacks are on the left, the DDT is on the right.

Will do, but won't that be awfully generic?

it's totally possible to make a non generic mw popup with everything mounted on the baseplate.

you almost never want to use irons over razors on popups.

Okay, then. Here's my attempt at something un-generic. (that's totally a word)

DSA, 2 stacked blacks, 2 ramplates...

I probably shouldn't have gone with a setup with 2 ramplates and DSA, because I think 3 razors probably isn't enough.

And that chassis took bloody ages to do right, because I never knew how annoying the HPZs' collision meshes were. Oh well, now I know.

Way too steep... HS's would rape it easily

Make the front less steep, indeed.

2 blacks for 1 ddt and 2wd is too much

If you're going to use ramplates as the actual wedge, you probably want them shallower than this-

Game over, click wins the entire thread

Oh well, I guess I need to lurk moar. Also, I redid the ramplates, which required me to lengthen the wedges, so the weight is now 396.3. Is there anything else I need to do? Except a cack-handed skin?
