Title: Lennert's showcase
Post by: Lennert on August 27, 2010, 05:46:41 PM
Hello fellow virtual roboteers!

I'm new here, but not to RA2. I've been on an other forum in the past but have been away from RA2 for like 6 years, so said forum has vanished..

Anyway, without further ado.. I want to know if my designs still hold up after all these years so I'll be posting them one by one in the near future. Constructional criticism is welcome!

So here's Tristandon:

Some info:
Type: VS (dôh)
Class: Heavy
Weapons: Dual vertical spinners with irons, boosted by servo's, additional DDT with wedge
Strengths: Very heavily armored, stable, powerfull weapon, hard to get under, can self right if it's on it's back.
Weaknesses: Vurnerable at the back, can get stuck on slopes or on it's side.

No DSA and no stacking in this one

Better than anything I ever built. Much better, in fact.

Also welcome to GTM. It's awesomer here.

 :welcome

Looks quite good, obvious that you've played RA2 for a while!

No DSA and no stacking in this one
Does that mean it has plastic armour, no HW should have plastic armour IMO

Thanks! I'll be scrolling through a lot of designs on this forum this weekend. I've allready seen some cool bots!

@Vertigo: It has regular steel armor.

Nice to see another RA2 user who took a break from, and then came back to RA2.
(Ehh..)

Still, your bot in the OP looks VERY nice.

You can lighten extender work, notably by using only round extenders (same HP but lighter)

And it is the first time i see what is basically hybrid chained motors. Does the servos spin ?

Try & avoid angled extenders & square extenders

Welcome back!

Don't use steel armor, it's is bad for weight

use DSA, or double strength aluminum.

To get this, don't select an armor when making your chassis. Just skip it.

Post by: Lennert on August 27, 2010, 06:10:52 PM
Thanks for the tip on the extenders, I thought squares had better HP..

The servo's are only there to make the zteks go hyper, nothing else.

I know how to get DSA, but I used to think it lame to use because of the weight advantage. When boosting or stacking you always have to pay the weight price at least, DSA is just free armor..
But I might rebuild this bot entirely with all your tips in mind and give it DSA aswell ;)

Kewl! So this is what bots look like back then.

And welcome back. :D

Well, DSA is pretty much universally accepted these days, so don't worry about "unfair advantages" from it and the like. In fact, you're disadvantaging yourself not using it.

I can tell you've been playing for a while too. That bot has a really cool old-school pro feel to it. I suggest taking a look at some showcases (particularily Sage's, Pwnator's and Scrap Daddy's) to see just how far building in Stock has come.

And if you don't mind me asking, was Lennert your username when you were active, and what community were you active within? Was it the official Atari/Infogrames forums or one of the offshoots?

Ah, how I missed this style of building. I like the way you build, keep at it and you'll be a master in no time.

Thanks for the comments guys!

@Roboshark: My username used to be Shogun (hence the SR on the wedge for "Shogun Robotics") and I was active on the regular robotarena2 forums. I guess it was the official one, I don't really remember to be honest.

I'm sure to attend to those showcase you mentioned!

Here's another bot of mine. Not nearly as original as Tristandon since this bot's design is pretty much how every MW popup was built back then, but I still like it alot. It wins battles and is a dream to drive. And maybe it's just fun for you guys to see the difference between those old bots and present day designs.

Here's NOX:

Some results (these are from the present)

It's a MW popup wedge with 8 razors on DDT's and a single DDT wedge.

It's a shame, it seems I've lost quite a few designs over the years. No wonder, considering I've gone through 4 different PC's since then.

*Edit* P.S. Where can I get the latest SC?

Doesn't look too bad. =) My one worry would be that it's slightly underpowered with just one Blackvolt in there.

Post by: Pwnator on August 28, 2010, 10:05:58 AM
Actually, that design is still being used today (without the angler). :D

Also, SC is already on its 4th version (https://gametechmods.com/uploads/files/StarcoreV4Alpha2.zip (https://gametechmods.com/uploads/files/StarcoreV4Alpha2.zip)), though as you can see it's not a complete overhaul.

Hey, that's the forum I was on and I remember Darkrat from back then! thanks for the link :)

Does anyone remember who it was that built at least 5 horizontal spinners per day that were only slightly different? He had a showcase of dozens of pages filled with them. Apparently it was so funny I still remember that, but not his name.

I don't know the time frame you came from... but HS people were me, InfiniteInertia, ACAMS, and SC.

Anyways, that building style of your first bot reminds me of when I first got here. Very cool.

I was around before StarcoreAI V3 was launched and I quit playing just after DSL got launched. I think I quit around 2004/2005 and had been around for some years by then.
Title: Re: Lennert's showcase
Post by: R0B0SH4RK on August 28, 2010, 11:06:16 AM
And that's the reason why I don't remember you :D

Most of the people here that have been around for a while (like myself, Sage, Scrap Daddy, Jack Daniels) popped up in around 2005/2006, you're a little before our time.

Some of the bots you posted in the Battleshots thread look pretty cool. Could you post some better angles in here? Thanks.

Here's a MW VS I like.

Slingshot:

Specs: Double HP ztek spinners with 4 razors each, double static wedges, double HP ztek drive, can self right.

I might replace the razors with maces, don't know where to lose the required weight though..

Could post some battle shots/results if anyone is interested.

This is the first bot I showcased when I came on the other forum, it was very controversial back then. I wasn't even playing SC yet when I built it.

Mortal sin:

Not much to tell, what you see is what you get ;) It's all about the looks with this bot.

For the MW, weight can be gained by shaving off parts of your chassis (like the middle slope) and minimizing extender weight.

You could try putting them on 2 Snapper IIs so it can be wedgier. :D

As for the HW... <3 <3 <3

HELLO IDEA FOR DSL!!!

The first bot is hardly an old design, looks competitive albeit a bit underweaponed!

Nice bots though. Lots of old style but new at the same time.

Should upgrade the drive to HPZs.

Use DSA (if you haven't already ;))

And I like your skins for the parts!

Also,  :welcome !

You should check out the PYS, BBEANS, NAR, RR, and Backlash AI packs!

Thanks for the tip but if I wanted to improve on Mortal Sin I would have done that a long time ago. Instead I built a completely new bot which became Tristandon. Mortal sin was built before I knew about all those nifty glitches and tricks and before I had ever been on a forum. It must be like 8 years old.. ;)

Here's a VS/HS hybrid I did. It's kinda slow but it has 6 boosted spinners with irons that extend way beyond the chassis on all sides to make up for it. It's core weakness is the redbirds for drive motors

Windforce:

And a nice battle shot:

There are some more battle shots of it in the battle shots thread.

Thnx for the link freeziez :)

Because you didn't listen to me.
And the same here. I shall go make a chained VS.

That VS/HS looks quite good. You could maybe put the two Horizontal spinners on one servo to save some weight, possibly swap the discs for some fairly simple extender work, and you might have the weight for HP Z-Tek drive.

Thanks for the tip NFX. I might lose the discs but I'm not sure about the servo's. I wired the servo's such that I can swing the HS motors forward if needed, if I go for a single servo I lose that ability.

I did a rebuild for Tristandon today. I got rid of all the square and angled extenders and gave it DSA which gave me very nice weight advantage. I tried a few ideas for what to do to reach the weight limit. Tried to give it caster armor for instance but that didn't seem to make any sense.. now i've come up with this:

It now has 4x HP ztek drive! But I'm not sure if I like it, it used to be much more stable and less havoky then it is now. Any other suggestions?? I might just enlarge the chassis to give room for those motors with regular attachment.

Try just 2WD and double up on weapons.

My thoughts exactly. I'll go back to my trusty 2WD and do some work on it's weaponry.

Allright, this one's final. My love is renewed!

Meet Tristandon II:

As you can see I've added a HS motor with 6 irons, it works well and gives me much more options in terms of combat manoeuvres. Mostly because the new irons reach beyond the snowplows and the back of the robot. It's also alot harder to tip it on it's back and it's not as vurnerable at it's back either.

Complex spinner looks great. Can't see that much wrong with it. Would it make a difference if the VS servos were swapped for HP Z-Teks?

What complex spinner ? I see  hybrids here, not CS's.
Title: Re: Lennert's showcase
Post by: Lennert on August 31, 2010, 11:08:34 AM
It has become a VS/HS hybrid with the VS part having boosted motors (or chained.. I prefer to call it boosting since I feel "chained motors" sounds like all motors are spinning and they aren't). To be a complex spinner it would require spinner motors on the end of a spinning tribar (or any extender spinning radially).

To answer your question NFX, It wouldn't matter if they were HP zteks. It's the fact that the spinner motors have another mechanical device in their attachment chain that makes them spin faster, it might aswell have been a snapper or DDT or whatever. The tribars allready spin so fast they appear to be stationary.

Edit: Btw. The bot appears to be auto-self righting as a result of adding the third spinner, nice bonus!
