Title: how does one achieve Veteran status?
Post by: ianh05 on July 27, 2010, 07:01:13 PM
hey guys I've been wondering what is needed to achieve veteran status on the forums. I've been around for about 7 years or so, hosted more tournaments then most, showcased a heap of bots and helped out the new people.

to sum up, i would like a purple title :)

Besides frezal and sorrow, Veteran is for people who have been respected for modding and/or bot building during their time. At least that's my take on it.

You should definitely be an advanced user at least, and I bet if you built something besides AWs and LWs Veteran should be within reach for how long you've been here. Personally I think RObO and Scrap deserve it as well.

If you're creating a thread about it, you're probably not a vet. I suggest sending ACAMS a PM detailing why you're a Vet. Not why you think you're a Vet, but why you are one.

There's nothing specific anyone can do to be a Vet. Either you are one, or you're not.

yeah i know i like to stick to the light weight classes, it's just more fun for me to try and build bots no one has seen before in those weight classes. I was also a little confused between the difference of some advanced users and some Veterans for example SSG is a vet and MikeNCR is advanced :/

I've been wondering why Virus Bomb and myself haven't become advanced users for a little while myself.

No, but seriously, the more you ask about it the less likely you'll get it. And to be perfectly honest, I've first heard of you about a month ago.

I've been showcasing bots for two years now, and (imo) giving some of the best advice possible in the stock showcase, and I own the Battlebotsvideos (http://www.youtube.com/user/Battlebotvideos) youtube channel =|

Since ian got vet status, I think MikeNCR deserves it too. He's been a member of GTM's since '04.

And Urjak, The Ounce, 123STW, amd Virus Bomb for AU's.

Personally I think RObO and Scrap deserve it as well.

If that's the case, you have to include Jack Daniels too.

I think MikeNCR, R0B0 and SD should be veterans.

Anyway, congrats ian!

Why don't you agree with you becoming one, G.K.? You have saved tonnes of tournaments, made lots of good bots, you have given lots of good advice, you have helped people out with projects and you are a good member of this forum. The list could go on and on so, why shouldn't you be one?

Fair enough. I personally feel that there are others, i.e. the ones you mentioned, as well as Red and Doom, who deserve the AU status more than me.

And whenever did I make a good bot? :P

MikeNCR deserves it too. He's been a member of GTM's since '04.

Crappy logic. By that line of thinking I should be veteran too for being an official forum member or something.

Perhaps there should be a voting process.

I vote that I stay in charge of that............VOTING CLOSED!

How was that?

If you moved up to advanced user just by post count, Sparkey would be an advanced user.....and clearly he is not!

Urjack is Spiderweight......one of the few special catagories that I created by hand....he can be an AU instead if he wants and I will delete the usergroup.

OR, we can do away with special usergroups all togather and everybody can be post count rated.

Veteran status SHOULD be warranted by building or modding skills. It IS an RA2 forum after all. Being here super long is no warrant by itself.

I also think Veterans should be somewhat scarce so they actually mean something.

Personally I think RObO and Scrap deserve it as well.

If that's the case, you have to include Jack Daniels too.

Not necessarily. You and Scrap are twice the builder JD is, in both DSL and stock. Even if he's been around long.

Just my opinion.

I'm usually against taking sides, and I don't mean to bring up a past post. But Sage brings up a good point.

I'm pro-Vet nomination, but I think it will be more beneficial to promote those who have made great achievements in the innovation of Robot Arena 2 in various ways in the past. On that note, if everyone ends up becoming Veterans just because they have been on a forum for a period of time. It takes away from the value of the nomination in itself. The nomination started on the old forums for those who have made very big innovations to the game: JimXorb with his discovery of the Rupt Glitch, RadioFSoftware with his various AI Packs and Components, CherryFlavored, whom only a few of us old timers know, who've actually invented the antiballast that we use in our designs to this day, Darkrat with his contributions to the creation of DSL, Starcore for his superhuman skill of creating difficult robots with such percision and perfection for not 1 but 3 AI packs, for starters. These people IMO deserved such a title for their contributions.

Veteranship, at least during my tenure, wasn't an official deal. The existing veterans either accepted you in as a veteran, or they didn't. I was accepted in amongst those such as Grawss and HackerX within a year or so.

How much one accomplished was fairly meaningless. Be0t did quite a bit, but was never accepted as being a veteran by the community at large. Which just goes to show that you can do amazing things and still be a total n00b (a very kind n00b, but a n00b nonetheless).

Crappy logic. By that line of thinking I should be veteran too for being an official forum member or something.

I don't see how that logic is crappy. If someone's been around the RA2 community for a while (let's arbitrarily say five years) and has been an active/contributing member for most of that time, they've been around long enough to be considered a veteran in my eyes. So, if you've been around for that long then yes, you should be a vet as well.

The problem here is few people here agree on what the criteria for a veteran is. I'm getting the sense that quite a few people view building skill as the main factor in determining veteranship, but I disagree with this. toAst and frezal from what I've seen aren't nearly as skilled builders as Virus Bomb, Pwnator and The Ounce and I've never even seen Serge build a bot. But why do we consider them vets? Because they've been around the community for a long, long time. Building skill should be the main factor in the Advanced User group, but tenure definitely defines a vet.

I'll do my best to rebuild my classic bots when I finally get around to reinstalling. People will complain about the size of my chassis on all of my bots, but I won't care. The paint job has always been more important to me anyway.

I won't. Like RFS, I hate most modern building, I have a ton of realistic bots that I never show. One of the things I hate is the "Airtight chassis" crap, it's the complete opposite IRL. But then again, IRL dosn't kill your bots when the chassis is hit.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Sage is right & I totally agree.  I can skin bots better than both of them though.  :P

I like being an AU & I appreciate that title very much.  I am surprised that everyone makes such a big deal of the titles on this forum.

Think of it this way.  You could sit in a pretty office on the highest floor of the tallest building in your city.  On the front of the door could have, in big shiny gold letters, your name and "CEO" right after it. Signifying you are important.  Ultimately, though, if you are dick... everyone is still going to think you are a despite your title.  So, earn your respect and cherish when people look up to you even if you don't have a title.  :P

Veterans or not. A title is a title. There are some great contributes on these forums. Whether they are vets or not. There will be some mixed views as many said before on what a veteran really is. I think its interesting though as to how some of us became vets in the first place. Some of the Old world vets like frezal here makes an excellent point on how Vets were "introduced into the group" while some new world vets are more noted for their contributions.

Actually,

You know that IRL, bot builders especially in the smaller weight classes do make tight chassis?

I think we should just stop promoting everyone unless fully deserved and get on with the point of the forum - eg RA2.
As someone said in the thread, can't remember who, even if your 'status' changes, people won't think any different of you.
I think you should really have to earn these statuses and be picked by those responsible - eg ACAMS.
I don't feel I've done enough for AU or anything, I've just been a forum member, and I think those who ask for these statuses *coughyouknowwhoi'mtalkingaboutcough* are a bit sad. You earn it. Like in actual real life, you earn money (etc), you don't just walk up to people and shout at them telling them to give it to you.
Some people are deserving of higher statuses I will admit, but I don't think we need to promote everyone.

Rant overr.

If we keep getting AUs and Vets at this rate, then everyone will probably be one or the other by 2012...

I just want SquirrelMonkeyweight back. (Or combine it with Urjak to form SpiderMonkey weight)

Small bump, but oh well.

if people ask for these things because they've been on for, say, 6 years, you should give them titles like "forum middle-ager" instead of AU and maybe "forum old-timer" instead of vet; if they deserve to have AU or vet status by doing something for the community afterwards, they can have it. an example would be, say, someone whose been on for five years, whose done nothing for the community, asking for vet status; instead of giving them vet status give them, say, "Forum old-timer" status instead. good idea?

I agree with Bubbleman on this. But not 'Forum old-timer', just something a bit different.

Forum Elder might suit, or maybe Experienced User.

I like 'Forum Elder'. It should be for good bot builders who have stayed on the forum for at least 2 years.
