Somebody is going to build a robot
« on: November 03, 2015, 10:24:09 PM »
I have the approvals in place from my school. I'm building a robot for my college senior project, and I have the money saved up to do it. I am unbelievably hyped. Building a 30lber for Motorama 2016 is the goal, going to mail off my registration tomorrow since the signups are opened I have noticed. 7 people already signed up on a 16 bot bracket  :thumbdown

Any idea what the design will be?

Current mental picture is a vertical spinner with some uniquely designed wedge elements to try to solve some problems inherent with the design in general, and cover up some weaknesses of current designs. I need to make design goals for the project based on a lot of factors however, and that may influence the design some. But that is the current idea.

Vertical spinner sounds really difficult. I've never built a real robot but I can imagine that stability and structural integrity will be a knightmare.

You got my vote for RA2 Wizard. Always and forever.

Whats with the weird spinner shape? Wouldn't it wobble?

The weapons center of mass is still in the center, allowing it to stay stable while spinning. This allows for one toothed weapons, allowing for more bite at higher RPMs.

The 30lb class is not capped at 16 robots.

Oh ok. Sportsman and featherweight were both at 16 entrants last year, so I assumed there was a limit of some sort. And I wasn't thinking crazy big spinners, but on the scale of current spinners it would be much closer to Hyper Active than to Riptoff. As for the design being challenging, I'll be spending a lot of time tweaking, doing FEA on the design, etc. because of it being a school project. So hopefully I'll be able to work out any kinks. There's a bit of pressure to do something cool because this project will be introducing quite a few people to the sport, and I'd feel like a dingus by saying "here's my combat robot, I built it to destroy other robots, but no I didn't put any weapons on it at all"

Is this your first robot? If so, a 30lb robot of any kind is quite ambitious—making it a vertical spinner is even more of a challenge.

That said, I am curious what your design is.  Are you willing to divulge some of the details, or is it all under wraps?
Any comments would be appreciated. :D

I just made my first robot in like a decade a 30, its failures were almost entirely electrical and were because I did basically all the electrical in the back seat of a truck on the way to the event.

Its really not that bad anymore, with things like solidworks taking the guesswork out of a lot of bot building and readily available parts that just "work" like plug and play gearboxes, there really isn't a ton of skill gap to cross between "good" robots and new ones, they can be largely designed in a couple of hours with easily findable solidworks parts, slap a frame and some zazz parts like the weaponblade overtop and you are a good amount of the way there.  You no longer need to get creative and really make something really simple as your first machine.

The real question is, is he prepared to make mistakes? that are probably costly in the learning process, ruin ate two drive motors and needs a better thought out frame, and a pneumatic safety that actually works at the pressure it should, if he doesn't have a good job that could be significant cost (not to mention costs of actually attending).  In a beatle or antweight or something, that cost is a lot lower, a whole frame made by hand might cost you 20 or 30 dollars in materials, tops, it is a lot more forgiving on costwise.

Your mother. She is trying to please me, but alas, it will be a terrible effort.

@Urjak: I'll keep it under wraps solely because it's reasonably up in the air still. But I've been waiting on this long enough and I tend to get pretty obsessive about my goals, so it should come together. Plus, if I don't do it, I don't get my degree haha.

Also, I added SKBT on Facebook and y'all should add me, I'm Jonathan in the recent friends but I don't know all your names. I'll probably be able to tell from the robot pictures who you all are haha

My thoughts exactly. Also good luck Somebody, but VS for a first bot sounds mental.

I mean, when these two guys right here are telling you that you need to stop (or rather, not start?) trying to be funny wink-wink-nudge-nudge meme arrows lennyface...

I get that you're trying to be 'one of the guys' with the quips and one-liners but it comes off as really forced and awkward. Just ease into it, man. You don't have to act like an 80's action hero to be liked around here.

I take full responsibility for off-topic'ing the hell out of this thread.
