Yeah I don't have a team name so deal with that thread title.
Making all the threads everywhere now my beetle is getting a little more serious.
Initial Sketchup Model (Thanks Tweedy :D)
Current component layout - missing mixer, wheels and forks. Lots of wire shortening to do.
Current Cardboard Mockup (cardboard bots revival 2014)
Will be invertible. Front plate 3mm steel, baseplate/top plate/sloped sides 4mm hdpe, then the rest of the chassis 'box' inside the side skirts (back and sides) will be 10mm hdpe.
-
Static wedge or are they on hinges like Satanix?
-
Looks like they're servo powered lifters.
-
Looks like they're servo powered lifters.
Badnik got it.
-
you sure that's a good enough lipo? it seems too big for a beetle.
-
Yeah the lipo's a little big, but if he has weight for it, why not? Not having to charge as often can be a lifesaver.
-
I crosschecked all my components with Tweedy and Haz so I'm pretty sure everything's alright.
-
battery is huge. you would probably be able to go a whole event without recharging with it.
something to consider: your lifter takes weight off your robots drive wheels when it lifts. I'm not sure if there's really anything you can do with your current design to change that beyond mount everything as close to the wheels as possible.
good luck with the build.
-
Oh yeah what wheels are you going for? Lite flites, banebots or something else?
-
If I have any weight left over I may look at the viability of some structure to help keep the wheels on the ground but we'll see how it goes.
Wheel-wise, I haven't actually looked into it yet, not entirely sure what the UK guys tend to use.
-
i'd recommend a lite flite or foam wheel over a hard rubber one for small bots because they absorb shock better so you're less likely to snap that tiny 4mm shaft or detooth gears.
-
I was thinking about foam wheels, so it's good to get some confirmation there.
-
Lite Flites are the best way to go, they're super light weight and get good traction, and are dirt cheap to boot. Only downside is that they need custom hubs, but the finger tech snap hubs work great.
-
yeah the snap hubs work fantastically for the 1000rpm motors. Just make sure to get the 4mm bore and not the 3mm bore, I screwed that up when ordering them for FireArrow. :P

Current Cardboard Mockup (cardboard bots revival 2014)
"And, in the blue square, CARDOARD BOX!" :dumb)
But in all seriousness, (or lack thereof), this looks like it can turn out really good.
Strong, compact design, a bit generic but good nonetheless.
-
Apart from wheel-holes, wheels, wiring and assembly, it's almost done now.
Pretty happy with how it's coming along. Will be smoothing out those HDPE ridges at the front at some point.
-
It makes me happy when I see people build robots in real life, because it means that our sport will not be dying anytime soon.
-
Looks sweet. What are the front forks made of?
-
The front armour and the flipping plate (yeah, I didn't have enough room for forks - or I did and this would be stronger, rather) are all 3mm mild steel.
-
Ran out of time with regards to mounting the steel and flipper as I had SO much to do without realising, so seem as though there aren't really going to be any 'battles' for Beetles as such at Bluewater this weekend with no arena, I mounted a temporary HDPE front plate.
The link isn't even in yet so the front plate hinges for me to get to the battery connector.
For the first time it properly battles, the steel and flipper will be mounted, and hopefully it'll run inverted (the wheels are too small on this iteration)

PS: Roboteers make robots look waaaay too simple
PPS: This thing has the ability to push shoes. Get a load of that.
-
shoepusher 3000
-
For some reason I thought that would be a sensible thing to push at the time. I'm an idiot.
-
dont be. ive done dumber robot related things

if you can flat push a workboot, you win
-

Stratos could flip an empty watering can. That's a good test subject, right?
-
my bot can push shoes too :V
-
I might test it with more shoes, it's an important scale.
-
Put some electrical gubbins into a rollerskate for beetleweight realism.
-
my bot can push shoes too :V
And destroy wooden floors ;P
I might test it with more shoes, it's an important scale.
Try with a kg of sugar, that way you can compare to how it would push another beetleweight
-
Try with a kg of sugar
I am a student why would I have a kg of sugar lying around?

here lies shoe

The bot actually looks like something you would make in RA2. It's mostly the eyes. Regardless, I do like it.
-
Gave it a subpar temporary weapon for the weekend just so it wasn't a wedge. Then I burnt a speed controller. Oops.
Either way, he still looks cheerful, and has his own totally awesome [/lies] tshirt.

So how do it perform.
-
So how do it perform.
The pushing match it had with Limpet was very heated.
-
'heated'
haha.
Snappy is going to be fixed up and have a few major upgrades over Christmas, and I've also bought the parts for my next project, Nanohurtz.
Yeah, antweight Terrorhurtz, whatcha gonna do? (mainly not be scared because it's going to not cause any damage)
Current CAD of the HDPE 'box' the components will sit inside (thank you Tweedy), which will be surrounded by slanted polycarb, for authenticity.
Probably just speedhacking a 360 servo for the axe for now, so it might not even right due to the lack of torque, but it'll look cool, and that's all that matters. :P
-
CAD - Sketchup ;) Stole my idea, mind I'd recommend talking to Dave Weston the Antweight guru about the weapon motor mate.
Wait a minute. I thought you were going to build a feather? OI
-
Right time for a big listy numbered reply :P
1) Yeah, Sketchup. Still, it's computer aided! :L
2) Weapon motor wise I don't care how it works as long as it looks like the bigger thing so I think that should do me fine. Bear in mind I have been chatting to Tweedy about this also.
3) Feather is still in planning but is gonna have to wait, I have literally no money or a lot of time until probably around April, so if I can get something running by Bluewater next year (if it runs) that'd be perfect. I'm also completely open to buying a FW should the right kinda one come up, but that's unlikely :') Keeping my eyes on the FRA For Sale section.
-
You may want to change the name, nano is associated with nanoweights now
-
I did think that, but it sounds better than Picohurtz. Microhurtz is an option I guess.
-
Why doesn't Tweedy use Inventor or something that isn't Sketchup?
-
Why doesn't Tweedy use Inventor or something that isn't Sketchup?
Because sketchup does everything I need, I do plan on learning inventor at some point but until then sketchup ticks all the boxes of the basic design stuff I do.
-
Don't mock Sketchup. I use it for my 3d printing business and it's earned me a damn lot of cash.
Craig I can't call Sketchup work CAD because autocad is it's own software. I just refer to the designs as 'meshes.' Sounds more professional too. I can understand why people don't want to use the term 'sketchup' because when it's mentioned, people think of it as a really crappy program for beginners. But obviously there's a lot to it that people are not aware of.
I know Tweedy is class but there always something Dave can advice you with. He has made a line of AWS Champions don't forget. (Sorry tweedy!)
Re-feathers. Get some HDPE, Argos drill motors and the same £3 wheels I'm using and you've got a cheap as fook FW That will work like a dream mate. I'm just being awkward because I've got s900's so I need an expensive speedo and I'm being more awkward because I want 4wd so I need belts and pullys ect... Oh and I like Hardox. ;)
-
Some thick HDPE and those components/escs will cost me more than I can really spend though, I'm doing this ant on the cheap.
I'll probably end up doing that feather plan over Summer :P
-
If you're doing a UK ant axebot I'd look into a spring loaded setup. There was a 1lb ant that used it to some success around here a few years ago, and I'd hazard a guess it'd work better in a lower weight class because of the obvious lower armor.
Ask Nate for more details, he fought it twice :V
-
I'll look into it in future, but for now, I just want something functioning. I'm not really competitive with my designs, if you couldn't tell :P
-

I can't argue with that lol, dave is worlds better than me in both AW and FW design.

the builder said he ditched it because it became ineffective. tbh it was more of a dustpan bot than an axe bot.
-
Hmm. The bot's eyes are painted so they are straight, i prefered where they weren't straight (like on the tshirt). It gives it more personality and has that MS paint quick job goodness to it.

that honestly doesn't look like it's gonna get under anything

That won't get under anything, that's not the actual outside shape.

That's because you're looking at the internal structure of it, that is without outer armour or a proper wedge.
-
go pretendo go!
Just trying out some stuff. At 11x11 base area it's much too big, but the length can be bought down a few cm.
Also, will be surrounded in polycarb, not just the front (I know it's card, it's representing polycarb :P)
Yeah, basic test to look at shape and stuff. Will look cool when it's done.
-
POLYCARBOARD!
Ok you can feed me to snappy now. Looks a bit tall but oh well.
-
Some of the height will most likely be empty space, much like Terrorhurtz. The 'lid' on the internals will be down with the servo.
-
looks good

-
It's the same robot, the internal motor mount 'pod'.
-
He said it's a removable drive module.

something he and his robot share, apparently ;)
Looking forward to seeing it drive into my room and steal something. More looking forward to watching it actually fight. :D

You know full well it'll probably be in pieces by the time you get there :P

Well I look forward to the video, and for you to knock on my door with tears in your eyes "snappy is kill" :/
-
Sounds like the beginning of a horrible fan fiction
cute bot though :)
-
Make sure to battle harden the motors, especially for a bot that is mainly designed to charge into the spinnners.
-
This is amazing. My friend and I are planning on building robots on our own to fight eachother. It's been a dream since we were five and watched Robot Wars. Our plan is to start with SumoBots and work our way up to the bigger robots. Though we don't have that much money or time so we probably won't be able to build RW-robots in a near future...
-
how much money do you have? you could probably build an antweight for less than £70.
-
you could probably build an antweight for less than £70.
This, you can make a bot on just about any budget if you don't plan on competing with it though as any things can be re-purposed depending on what weight you are building to. Ants or Beetleweights are a good place to start on a low budget though as they are significantly cheaper than other classes and are a nice size to work with starting out.
-
From my experience in the last few months, beetles are nicer to build than ants unless you have a 3d printer handy :P
-
It hasn't been wired yet, right?

I find ants easier to make since you can make them in an evening :P

Done. :)
-
zomg kitteh! :3
what's the front wedge made of? titanium?
-
3mm mild steeeeel
-
What's the cat? Featherweight? What's its weapon?
Also how wedgy is your wedge?
-
Use 2mm bullet connectors for the ESCS and motors.
-
also you might wanna file down the front edge of the lifter wedge so it has a "lip" in front. that makes it harder to get under
something like this:
(the right image)
-
I know, that's the plan :)
-
What's the cat? Featherweight? What's its weapon?
From initial testing, Jasper (FW) was found to jump out of the arena and claw the opposing roboteer's crotch.
The friend who it was first tested against got gangrene in his private parts due to it. It was rough.

Updates from the weekend, including photos and video, can be found over at www.facebook.com/SnappyRobots (http://www.facebook.com/SnappyRobots) :)

3D print came through for my UK Ant axe. Don't even know if it's gonna be right, hahah

-
What service did you use?
-
Shapeways, but in future I'm going to be speaking to my Uni to see if I can do it there as I imagine it'll be a whole lot cheaper.
-
Looks pretty sweet. Good luck getting it together.

You could try asking Alex or Will. Alex will do a chassis for around £20-25

Snappyramid
Should be done in time...
-
Snappyramid
i see what u did thar
on a more reasonable note, thats a very nice lookin bot, what are its weapons?
-
The bottom one has a lifter.
The top one... will also have a lifter.
There's a trend ;)
-
very cool. what weight?
also guitar + guitar hero?? p cool.
-
More Snappy!
What are you running on it?
-
Upped it to 4S lipo, botbitz 10a escs (gotta go careful there!), the fancy ranglebox 'good' and hardened 1000rpm motors, and 2 of the 15.5kg.cm servos I ran on Snappy 1 (only ran 1 there). If I can make it not blow up it should at least be interesting.
It's a UK beetleweight creepalot so it'll be around 1.5kg

Mr Snappy 2
UK Beetleweight Championships 2015 - Quarter Finalist and Annihilator Grand Champion.
Not bad :)
-
Any footage of the event?
-
Hey Congrats on making the quarters and winning the Annihilator.
Also, where is that RW floor skin located? The actual event?
[/dumbquestion]
-
The event was all filmed by multiple sources, only actually officially finished like 5 hours ago though so everyone has either been socialising at the venue since then or travelling home, expect footage over the next few days.
The floor from that photo was the floor of the Kinematic Events arena itself.
-
What are the angled side plates made of?
-
What are the angled side plates made of?
Looks like HDPE to me
-
Yep. Side panels, baseplate and lid are all 4mm HDPE. Internal HDPE 'bulkheads' if you will are all 10mm so there's always at least 10mm of HDPE (usually 14) between bots and the electronics.
Wedge is 2mm Grade 5 Titanium, so it takes a hell of a knock.
-
What are the angled side plates made of?
Looks like HDPE to me
me too but every time i've tried to bend hdpe to make an angle like his front end memory takes over and it eventually bends itself back.
-
Heat. :)
The front end on this one was bent after holding a soldering irons barrel to it.
-
I'll have to give it a shot, I kind of wanted ruins front end to be cool and angular since there's just a ton of extra room in front of the main bulkhead but didnt want to make tons of weird angle brackets :p
-
Wedge is 2mm Grade 5 Titanium, so it takes a hell of a knock.
That thing was a real bitch to grind, worked nicely though.

Ugh, .8mm is already a pain in the ass, I'd hate to see how many discs had to die to make Snappy happen.

Um, I cut through 5/8" solid (15.8mm) with one disc, you just got to get the right rpm and go nice and slow

Only the one but there wasn't much left of it afterwards, I'll upload a picture once I get home from work of what was left of it.

Worth putting this one up too, before I finish a full build/event report.

Mr Snappy 2, Mr Snappy and the new chassis for Snappy Senior (the old Robob chassis for anyone that may remember. Immaculately welded mild steel).
Planning to get it running over the next few months, and upgrade bits as we go ready for the 2017 FW Champs.
Also coming soon... plans for AW Snappy, BW Snappy cluster, Mr Snappy 2 alternate attachments (front hinge anyone?) and possibly eventually thoughts for Mr Snappy 3 which I don't plan to build until the next BW champs comes around seem as though MS2 has worked so well so far.
-
I wonder who bought you that feather chassis. ;)
-
Some DissenterCyan guy ;p
For real, thank you. :)
-
Any footage of the event?
I found some videos from Riptide Robotics. One fight with Mr. Snappy in it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHq22Anv22w (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHq22Anv22w)
FHQWHGADS should have been DQ'd in that fight for using its electronics as an entanglement device. :P
Congratulations on the win Craaig!
-
Thank you but that felt very much like a hollow victory as Newton and Fhqwhgads (the eventual winner) got basically DQed for being stuck.
Here's 2 of the matches I'm a lot prouder of.
Round 2 Match: Headbanger vs Mr Snappy 2 vs Newton
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7k0tXXKXWFA# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7k0tXXKXWFA#)
Watch for me dying in the background at the end :P
The white sides were foam taped on to defend against Newton. As a funny joke I scrawled Non-Newtonian Solid on the side of them.
The Annihilator: 15 different bots that I'm not going to list out
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pwa5x92TTZU# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pwa5x92TTZU#)
A unanimous decision from all 3 judges (Shane Swan, Ed Hoppitt and Andrew Marchant) gave me the win, and I couldn't be prouder.
First competitive tournament and managing to win the annihilator and getting to the quarters made me feel very good. :)
-
Thank you but that felt very much like a hollow victory as Newton and Fhqwhgads (the eventual winner) got basically DQed for being stuck.
Yeah I thought it was weird that somebody didn't stop the match to unstick those two. Newton was clearly still working but it had wires wrapped around its weapon shaft. I meant more general congratulations for winning the Annihilator and stuff. And for making a bot that can take hits and not suffer some random failure. Half the battle is just getting through without breaking.
-
Apparently they decided to not run unsticks during 4-way melees. Bit odd but we couldn't really argue.
-
Still amazed we didn't meet in the main competition, I shall avenge Ash at some point. Plus I want to see what Hyperion will do if it actually gets under something as opposed to hitting a flat side.
-
Yeah I kept shouting to the judges 'I'm dead, Newton is stuck on my Lipos' but they wouldn't unstick. Felt legitimately bad about it but at least there were loser's melees I guess.
For the record, Ellis did sell me a 30A esc about a minute before that fight. During the fight Newton pulled many components off the ESC board, writing it off. I felt a little less bad after realising hah.

Cooked up a belated build diary/event report for MS2

CADing (cardboard aided design) the Snappy ant (we all knew it was going to happen)
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/153272016-02-20 17.50.13.jpg)
Largely just a dimensional test. Hoping to get the whole lid acting as the lifter.
Next task - maybe transfer it to sketchup or inventor and then get the 2mm HDPE out and try it in something a little more robust than a cider box...
-

Things are afoot. Brand new things.
I'm so excited about this bot.

That's not a foot, that's a wheel.
-
You passed my first test!
-
Saw the thread yesterday, really nice beetleweight you have there and congratulations on the victory in the Annihilator, looked nice in action(however modern RW is just so fast now). How much did it cost in total to build?
If I lived near a place where they would do such events and had the money/tools, I'd have loved to build a robot and enter.
-
Thank you! :)
It's always hard to judge the cost of this bot as a lot of it was scavenged material, but an estimate for all the internal parts, wheels, wedge and plastic would probably come to somewhere near or just above £100. Not a cheap hobby but it's so worthwhile :D

That's nice, I imagine it being harder to get used parts here(then again my parents have a lot of metal parts in the basements), definitely can see why the lighter weight classes, especially featherweights, get made, 100$ isn't that much compared to 1000$(Series 3 Hypnodisc cost 800$, and bots could easily range from 200$(reusing parts) to 3-4000.)
-
To get a competitive heavyweight nowadays you'll be looking above your top estimate.
BattleBots give competitors $8000 towards their bots.
Series 3 was a loooong time ago :D

Yeah I know, it was just an example that even back then those were very expensive. Think the only series when they were somewhat "cheap" were 1 and 2(and some of the weaker Series 3 bots)

One day I will actually finish an ant.
Have a cardboard mockup with random internals thrown inside and mockup cardboard flipper replaced with real polycarb flipper.

They are supprisingly cheaper now than back then, as back then you needed to drop thousands into speed controllers
Its just that the bar is now set so high you should probably spend a lot in fancy materials and motors and such, but it isn't /required/ persay, I think charles's sadbot cost around $1k
-

Definitely this. I skip over extremely large images 9/10 times and never look at them again.
-
You really gotta resize these things before uploading them dude
I think that's because they were uploaded from a mobile phone. I usually think it's better to not downsize them because it's likely that the quality could be buggered up massively. That's just me, though, I can see why people would prefer downsized pictures. Still, though...Definitely this. I skip over extremely large images 9/10 times and never look at them again.
Couldn't you just wait for them to load up? Doesn't seem like the best of reasons to "never look at them again" IMHO.
-

It has to do with my initial interest. If it's something I know for a fact that I'll be interested in and will be worth the wait for the image to load, I'll wait. However, if it's something I'm not that interested in or I have no idea what the image is going to be, I can't be be bothered to wait, especially when viewing on my phone, which I do a lot. It's excruciating on my phone because, whenever I scroll down, I'm shot back up because another image has started to load. This will lead to me to ignoring entire threads if it's an image heavy thread or there just so happens to be a fair few images on that one page I was about to read. In this case, it was the 1/10, because I'm interested in Robot Wars Live and he mentioned Snappy, so I wanted to see what the pictures were.
-
tbh i cba to resize them so youknow lol
feel free to move along, my content is not interesting

I like how replies to a post about robots on a robot forum are all about image size...
Apex's new blade looks pretty terrifying, do you know if they've been able to use it in a fight yet?
Also, your new antweight looks suspiciously like Adder (https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/56629adder.jpg), expect to hear from our lawyer soon.
-
I like how replies to a post about robots on a robot forum are all about image size...
Tell me about it yo.
Apex hasn't used the blade as they couldn't get it to the US for Robogames, not sure if this version will see full combat now...
As for the ant, hah, I just made a generic flipper with wedge corners on it like everything else I've done. Not my fault if Adder is supa generic ;)
-
Apex could make it into a future Robot Wars for sure though.
-
DNQ this time round but with a redesign in it's future I can't see why it wouldn't :)
-
As for the ant, hah, I just made a generic flipper with wedge corners on it like everything else I've done.
Was the flipper working at Portsmouth? I wasn't sure if it was when I saw someone driving it in the Antweight Arena.
-
Nope, when I built it the night before I tightened the arm onto the servo too hard and cracked some gears. Because I'm an idiot :P
-

Yeah that was the first non-kit bot we built :P I think I'm going completely redesign it when I have time,it's around 5 or 6 years old at this point.

What motor did you use for that spinner on nuclear penguin?
-
If I'm not wrong that's an NTM Prop Drive brushless motor.

Dude that bar spinner yaaaasssssssss
-
Hah, it's really not great. Looks fun though. Way too old and badly built, but been designing a new one for a while.
Hopefully get that done sometime this year, along with the new Snappy (will be 4wd), Spinball (BW Drum) and the eventual feather :)
As of now, the current beetles are likely retired from competition, after TNP was generally bad and Snappy 2 woefully underperformed/got torn up
-
Okay, fun update. The new Snappy will likely not be a lifter or 4wd. Shock.
Hammer Snappy incoming in the next few months :P

Is this a Featherweight clusterbot or two Featherweight robots? Either way, really liking the idea.
-
Feather cluster. It's literally a chassis I have (Robob, if anyone remembers that) cut in half, with back plates, and filled with drive :P

Ever heard of Slap 'Em Sillier? it reminds me of that.

Slinky will indeed be driving Pink at the champs next year. :)
-
Looks good, 2wd wedge clusterbots.
How strong are the motors? I only worry a bit that 2wd isn't strong enough to push(then again I have no idea about the technical components used in this and how strong the motors are),loving it.

hey, I recognize twin headed death flamingo, I saw it at the Portsmouth extreme robots event, it was pretty cool but a large number of kids and adults compared to a lonely lil teenage boy was rather surprising. Did your team make it or nah?
-
I was one of the people that built it, yes. Two-Headed Death Flamingo is a team of 4 people, often joined by Rory from Nuts who helps us maintain it, and our respective partners. The youngest of any of us at Portsmouth was 21. If you were at any show that wasn't the first on Saturday, you'll have also seen my featherweight, the big pink one :)
Related, event report for Mingo from Portsmouth, where we finished the competition in 3rd place!

Thought it'd be fun to do a summative post of the 4 years of evolution on Snappy. Hardly anybody's first bot is a piece of art, the best way to build something cool is to start, and improve! Only now am I getting to the point where Snappy is actually the robot I wanted to build when I started.
https://www.facebook.com/SnappyRobots/posts/2075209252800412
Very proud of where it's at, and looking forward to taking it to BBB this weekend then Bugglebots and the European Championships later in the year!
-
Liking the new snappy. Servo under a full body length lifter it looks like?
-
Yep! A lot of people are critical of not having a hard linkage from the servo to the lifter but I've found it really advantageous. Verts hitting the wedge just tend to throw the wedge back instead of the entire bot, plus no broken servo. It means I don't get optimal power but as long as it can lift bots, that's all that matters I think.
-
Hmmm good point. You wouldn't be able to self-right either way so it doesn't cost you anything. I like it
-
Over the summer I'll actually be upgrading it with a 270degree servo so we should have a decent shot at self righting!
-
I see this area of the forum is dead in general but wow, 2 years. Feels like time for some form of update. I'll split this into sections... long post ahoy...
