Title: Post Your RR2 Bots
Post by: FlamesOfIce on September 23, 2018, 09:53:08 AM
Hey guys, so with the addition of a fully functioning bot lab. I decided to make this thread so people can post their creations so far in RR2.

Note to mods: If you think this shouldn't be here, then feel free to remove it.

Why not wait until a full release of RR2?

Because by then, people will start making showcases. Now I just want there to be a megathread for people to post now.

I could never figure out how to wire any of the motors even when following the instructions. So haven't made anything that works.

Looks awesome!  Well done!  I was wondering how to do Bubblegum in the botlab, and I think you nailed it.

You make Bubblegum by first making the chassis, and then making a layer-after-layer shell with studded teeth.

I absolutely LOVE this game! I've been making some bots and youtube vids for it because I feel that there just isn't enough people showing off their creations and making this game more well-known. Anyways, I just made these 4 today. The physics in regards to steering is amazing in this game. You can even do the Minotaur celebration!

Hope you all like the bots!

Nice replicas. Just saying though, but you can insert your attachments to your post, so it will make it more easier to see the pictures

Sorry about that!  @tashic is working on motor wiring now.  It is complicated, and taking a while to sort through.

Stuff that should work right now:

1. Attach a couple of AmpFlow motors, one or the left wheel and one for the right wheel.
2. Attach wheels to the motor attachment points.  You will probably need to rotate the view to get the wheels to snap to the axles.
3. Go over a few screens to the "Controls" tab.  Select the motor on the left side of the screen, and click "Left Drive Motor".  Select the motor on the right side of the screen and click "Right Drive Motor".  The game assumes that the forward direction for the robot is forward the rusty green lathe in the back of the room.
4. Click on the game controller icon at the top of the screen to test the controls.
5. Use WASD to drive.

Hi guys, quite enjoying myself so far, I must say.

Couple of questions about future plans.

- Belted motors, are they happening?
-Circular custom weapons?
-Wiring UI and process being more streamlined? (Which tbh Idk why I'm asking this, you already answered this).
-How soon can we expect creations vs AI fights?

Overall tho, cracking stuff, I've been messing around in the multilayered chassis creation section for hours alone!

Cheers, I'll be posting some creations in the other thread once I get stuff ready <3

1. Belted motors are on the Trello board todo list already.  We are working through servos, linear actuators, and pneumatics first.
2. Circular custom weapons might have to wait for the RR2 Component Modding Tool.  This will allow you to build whatever you want in a 3D program like Blender (free download at www.blender.org), import it into the RR2 Component Modding Tool Unity project (free download at www.unity3d.com), then export it for use in the game.  This workflow will involve additional steps, but will allow you unlimited freedom to create and texture the shapes.  Part of the reason for this is that making convincing-looking 3000 RPM spinners procedurally is kicking my butt, but it should be a much more tractable problem if you use a proper 3D modeling tool like Blender.
3. I'll let @tashic know about the wiring UI! :)
4. In the current Alpha build there should be a default AI assigned to your BotLab robots.  I am frantically trying to get the new in-game AI code editor running.  Its been a beast, but I've worked out most of the bugs and am hoping to put out another Alpha release to the public sometime in the next 2-3 weeks.

I'm glad you like the game, and can't wait to see what you post!

Not bad!  Its better than what I have created so far.  I'm looking forward to flippers too.  The prebuilt ones are super-satisfying, and I'm dying to get one built and AI'd.

How to export bots?

Your robot is saved as a [robot name].RR2Bot file.  Depending on if you are using a Windows machine or a Mac, the file is saved in a different location.  Since it is just one file, you should be able to email the whole thing, or post it somewhere online if it is really big.

On a Windows machine it should be the following.  I can't verify this at the moment on my Mac:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Nerd Island Studios LLC⁩\Robot Rumble 2_0\Robots

On my Mac, the file is saved here:
Users⁩ ▸ ⁨[username] ▸ ⁨Library⁩ ▸ ⁨Application Support⁩ ▸ ⁨Nerd Island Studios LLC⁩ ▸ ⁨Robot Rumble 2_0⁩ ▸ ⁨Robots⁩

Here's the reference for where it goes, depending on the platform:

Its simpler than that now.  Any .RR2Bot file that is in the /Robots folder will be loaded by the game automatically.  No need to import or export.

Seconded!

Gears are decorative.  They have colliders so things will bounce off of them, but they don't transfer torque.

Without gears or pulleys, you can't accurately replicate robots like Minotaur (drum spinner) or Carbide (bar spinner).

Pulleys and pneumatic systems are on our Trello board to do list though.

Looks good!

FWIW, I would like to get back to the texture painter at some point.  It feels incomplete right now.

Stripes are possible now with custom shapes.  Cut out what you need and slap it on to the surface.  It might take a lot of tweaking to get it to look good.

We don’t have an active Reddit thread atm.  It might be bad form to plug our own game.  I’m still pretty new at this whole social media thing, and trying to learn the rules.

I put a call out to our social guru though, and we should have something up on Twitter in the next day or two.

Spent way too long on this but here is my first RR2 build: a version of my DSL SHW Fait Accompli. It's 109.87kg, the chassis and weapon bulkheads are 5mm aluminium, the wedge and side armour are 3mm steel, the weapon shaft is 5mm steel.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I'll probably have to bulk it up to SHW so I can give it the toothed scoop/wedge of the original, and armour that doesn't crumple like tin foil if it rams headlong into a wall heck It's got excellent speed and pushing power, though.

With cjbruce's permission, I have set up a subreddit for Robot Rumble! You can find it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/RobotRumble/

I'm also thinking of doing a small scale Parsec tournament, with a focus on playtesting to give feedback to the developers (but also for the fun of it). Would there be any interest in something like this?

Sorry about that!  Units should be in meters, so an inch would be 0.0254 meters.  We’re trying to keep everything in SI units so folks can match up their designs to the real world.

I still don't really get this building system, but here's my first working robutt

I like it!  I am interested to see how the twin screws work in battle.

The intent with this game is to try to model damage physically.  Instead of simply giving damage points every time a contact point exceeds an impulse threshold like in RA2 (more contact points = more damage per round), I have made a system where fewer contact points = more damage.  This should benefit designs like yours, which try to focus all of the contact on a single point.

Guessing this system also make the weapon spammy bots with a lot of teeth work like IRL, where they are inefficient

Exactly.  🙂

I’m hoping that with the new system we will end up with in-game designs that converge on those that are effective IRL.

I think this is the first RR2 ring spinner: a recreation of my DSL-IRL ring spinner Sour Note. The chassis is a tiny box hidden inside the cylindrical main body, so it's illegal right now, but hopefully component destruction (and some flatter weapon motors!) will be added in the future.

Currently, I'm noticing the way to design is to put all the weight into the weapon and the wedge. With more weight being more damage and down force respectively

Do you feel like it is disproportionate and/or weird to put so much weight into the wedge, or is it okay?

Haha thank you, really liking the game so far. The bot builder is surprisingly intricate but still fun to work with. I was worried using so many individual pieces on a bot would break the game but it runs perfectly.

@tashic was really smart when he designed it.  In order to keep things performant when you add a shape, it strips the shape's rigidbody component and adds the new collider to the existing rigidbody.  This means it is possible to add a lot of intricate detail without bogging down the physics engine.

Do you have any suggestions to make building stuff like this quicker and easier?  I was thinking maybe we could set the custom shape width to something more reasonable like 0.006 meters.

Well... I feel a bit foolish posting these after the amazing Bite Force rep by Arcane, but nonetheless, I've been loving playing this game even at this stage so thought I would contribute these!

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Hypno Disc - Works just like the real thing! Probably my favourite rep I've made so far!

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Panic Attack - Had to create quite a lot of new shapes for the decals and stuff, but thankfully the game allows for the creation of precise polygons. Cannot wait for the decal painting system to be working!

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Tornado - The framework was fiddly but fun to do. Again - works just like the real thing!

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Pussycat - First rep I made. Gets caught on its butt and jigs back and forth but hopefully once the AI system has been developed that should solve it.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Razer - Not entirely accurate but you can tell what its meant to be... Doesn't crush but can catch bots and push them around nicely and believably.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Storm 2 - Currently working as a full body hammer. That said - still effective!

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Stinger - I think it looks great but doesn't operate that well at the moment... could do with a 'rubber' material for the tyres? Has the same problem as Pussycat when it comes to driving aswell.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Dominator 2 - The axe does work but naturally the Ai doesn't know when to fire it yet.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Gabriel - (See Stinger)

Oh! And I had a bit of fun with my own bot:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Dynamo - Small but a powerhouse.

I have a few ideas for how to make the game even more effective but I'll post them on the main thread since this is for currently posting bots atm!
But yeah basically loving the game and having loads of fun with it!

Also, do like all the bots shown here so far. The Biteforce replica in insane.

I treat clipping the same as I do in DSL-IRL: it's okay for custom shapes to clip through things, since you could cut a hole for them IRL, but it's not okay for, say, motors to clip inside the battery. Fait Accompli's drive motors clip slightly, because each motor has two axles, but I let that slide because again, IRL, you'd just cut the unused axles off.

Well done on all of them.

Aerogis was/is particularly interesting to me.  We just put Robert Cowan's Crippling Depression into the game, and I am a big fan of horizontal spinners.  Watching the Apex Rumble 2.0 video, the spinners don't look or feel right.  Fixing spinners is pretty high on my priority list.

I probably won't have a final fix ready for the next Alpha (Bugglebots!!! Woohoo!!!), but it is on my mind, and gosh darn it, will happen eventually.

Red Devil - It doesn't fully articulate like the real thing but it can drive (just) and the claws move which is good enough for me.

I've been trying to find anything that's irritating when building within the bot builder to report back on here and for the most part I'm struggling to find much that isn't already mentioned or currently planned to be implemented later down the line. The only minor issues I've come across is that if you snap a new component onto an existing one on a subtle incline then the component will lay flat, not inclined. (Eg: I couldn't get the track pieces to sit at the same angle as the component they're snapped onto as they either lay flat or at too sharp an angle). And the rotation tool could maybe do with a few more angle points.

Also thank you to everybody that commented on my last post.

Were the track pieces snapped to surfaces on a sphere, or on a polygon?

Here's Goodbye Kiss. The hammer isn't particularly heavy but it swings rapidly and has a counterweight for extra balance. Most of the body is 3mm steel, the front wedge is 6mm steel.

sorry to pollute all of the beautiful irl bots with something that looks demented but it had to be done
I started out trying to build a vs to learn how to use the botbuilder. After testing it in battle it would drive very stable but I quickly got tired of how often it would get flipped over, either from some havok-esque explosion or from touching the wall or something (which for some reason would keep lifting my robot). I tried giving it a srimech but couldn't figure out how to have controls for that along with the disk. So at this point I was really tired and went with the roll cage. It works, though.

It still has this problem though where if it backs up into the wall in the test arena, it straight up freezes, probably due to the back stabilizers glitching into the wall or something. It also doesn't work period in the warehouse arena since it just rolls backwards upon spawn until it goes inside of the wall, and then is just stuck there forever. Still is a lot of fun though.

I’m considering adding a script to lower the height of the center of mass to make all robots more tip-resistant.  It should help for almost every design except for something that is specifically designed to tip over.  Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any real-world examples of such a design though.  What do you guys think?

That would be a good addition.

P.S. Pussycat was practically designed to flop around and drive no matter what position it was in. That's the only example I know of.

I’m considering adding a script to lower the height of the center of mass to make all robots more tip-resistant.  It should help for almost every design except for something that is specifically designed to tip over.  Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any real-world examples of such a design though.  What do you guys think?
Overhead thwackbots like Stinger? I haven't tried building one in RR2 yet so I don't know whether they work currently. But for all the sh** RA3 deserves, that was one of the few things it got right: torque reaction worked. Anyone who had to fight Torquish Delight will testify that it worked very well.

alright this is to make up for the garbage I posted earlier

On the topic of the center of mass discussion: if robots IRL are less prone to tipping than robots in game, isn't there a more realistic way to go about making robots more stable? Also, I would think that the change would hurt flippers, since now its harder for them to invert robots that aren't invertible to win. I'm not necessarily opposed to it though, if its the best way to improve the stability of robots because that is something that will need to be ironed out eventually.

Edit: so on Nightmare it seems I accidentally deleted one of the spikes (you can see it in the image). I went back to fix it and then accidentally necroed the whole robot by moving a piece to a far away location and then clicking off, so that's that :dead:

Holy sh**, you nd arcane are amazing. My BB rep is sh** compared to this. As for the part going off.. i guess if you moved the chassis a bit to the direction opposite of of the component, you might be able to move it. Maybe set a limit of components direction to 2?

Thanks. I'm not sure about the exact direction and distance of the piece though, and if I move the chassis to get the piece I'm pretty sure I'd lose the chassis then, unless I'm missing something :/. I'm guessing that the only way to go about this would be a bot file edit if that's possible.

I'm not sure if I'm dumb and don't know all the controls, but an undue button would be a huge help in the bot builder (I'm guessing that's planned). Also, the main culprit for these errors is because when entering in coordinates, if the number box is focused but not the text itself, and if the number I'm entering leads with a "." e.g. ".350", then the period gets skipped and just 350 is entered. That's how I got the necro.

Oh my god, yes please. I had a similar issue while building Goodbye Kiss, but I quit the game, reloaded, and that specific change hadn't been saved somehow. I've also had issues where I've moved something and released the mouse button, but it doesn't release the controls, so I end up accidentally dragging the object halfway across the screen and have to manually put it back where it was instead of just hitting Ctrl+Z.

Shame about the Nightmare rep, because it's utterly gorgeous. You even put the weapon belt on it!

I fixed it bois

Had to edit the coordinates of the piece in the bot file. I also smoothed out parts of the disk and made the chain on the track closer to the size of the chain in the air.

It's actually pretty effective in battle, and somehow the spinner is strong enough to self right, so its basically everything I could have asked for.

For Arcane is God part, he seems to be just really great at RA2 and RR2. Check his RA2 showcase to see more of his skills: 8 pages. But still: https://gametechmods.com/forums/dsl-tc-showcases/arcane-does-dsl-2-2-irl-showcase/

Pretty much made for fun. this one is more like a way to kill time by seeing bots fly

Nicely done!  I like Fayne's Proposal a lot.  With the new damage system wheel protection is a good thing.

The past few years in our competitions the larger AmpFlow wheels (8" and 10") have had a habit of exploding into lots of pieces whenever they are tapped by a spinner.  Someday I want to model that in game...

It seems like mounting multiple wheels coaxially is pretty common.  Are you guys seeing a friction advantage to doing this?

I'll have to test, but I can't say I've noticed any real difference. I think it's equally likely to be an aesthetic thing, given how narrow the AmpFlow wheels are - people do the same thing with Colsons in RA2, where (IIRC) it gives you no grip advantage whatsoever. Two wheels are also more durable than one, but that's a factor that's only just come into play.

There is no traction difference, which is good honestly, because i can see that system being abused by sticking wheels into eachother

I'll put my $0.02 into posting a robot. It is a classic-style rammer. The default AI seems to have trouble controlling it.

Oooh, I like those custom spikes, as well as the whole "late-90s" vibe it has. Good build!
