The free emachineshop software has some nice 2D CAD tools with easy centre of mass calcs.
Most of the single tooth designs I've known of or have been involved with have been done in that software, including the Neutron disc and new Apex bar.

Are there any starter kits for robots? Or any basic blueprints for a traditional combat robot?

How much money does it cost usually to make a heavyweight?

A lot. At minimum, you're looking at 1000 bucks to build a basic platform, and at least 5000 to get it competent.

Here's a robot with offset drive wheels.
Is there much difference between turning clockwise and turning anticlockwise in terms of spinning speed or wear on the tyres?
If so, which direction does what in the above setup?

Oh hey it's tragic roundabout

Clockwise would be intuitive but I can't say anything definitely.

Do you guys know any in-depth combot making guides that are up-to-date? The Riobotz one is from way back in 2009 and the world has changed a lot since then.

The basics on the whole have not changed much. Components and methods have more-so. The discussions of brushed vs. brushless motors and how specifically to construct a robot are generally lost on someone without the understanding of robots and engineering that it provides. It taught me everything I needed to know in about 2016 to get me started, and know the questions to ask to get myself up to speed.

Other good resources:

I admit I'm a bit out of touch with robots these days, is brushless the default now or something?

brushless is the new hotness but brushed is the more simple option especially at the insect level.

Nice!

Wish there's any combot competitions here in Indonesia, it's gonna cost a ton of money to make a featherweight and fly to the UK for sure

Anyone know any good motors for a Hobbyweight? Specifically, I'm hoping to build a Maximus-style fast (as in, whatever the equivalent to 30mph would be for a Hobby) brick wedge with a lot of torque.

On that note, anyone know of a good way to have a good deal of torque w/o losing much (if any) speed? My idea was to take the motor, attach a belt/gear/chain with a really low/high ratio, then attach to that one with a really high/low ratio to even things out; on a scale of 1-10 how dumb an idea is this (1 being Galaxy Brain, 10 being critical derpface)

It would probably be lighter just to find a motor appropriately oversized to deliver both speed and torque. As for motors, if you want peak power, big brushless inrunners are probably where it's at. Just need to get the gearing right.

Also be careful testing because spicy drive becomes on-fire drive pretty easily.

New question: does anyone know the average speed, approximately, of a hobbyweight, so my bot can surpass that?

ONE MONTH LATER EDIT: So I did some research into brushless inrunners, and came across some on Hobby King. Think four of them will be enough for what I'm looking for?
