Ooh, this sounds interesting. I might ask the first question- who did Mortis get sold onto after Team Bud?
what happened to chaos 2 after it quit rwIt's still in George Francis's possession- it underwent a major overhaul after being heavily damaged by 13 Black to restore it to full working order, but it doesn't fight anymore, instead being on display every now and again.
What happened to Wheely Big Cheese? :3
The Extreme 1/Series 5 version of Wheely Big Cheese that produced the infamously huge flip, sending Axe Awe over the arena side wall from near the centre of the arena, went to Team Xbotz from Wrexham in North Wales and was completely rebuilt, with new electronics, batteries, revised pneumatics and upgraded drive system. It is still used in various live events and educational presentations around the UK.
In addition, the original Series 4 Wheely Big Cheese chassis was also owned by Team Xbotz, before being sold to, and fixed up by, Team Cylon (now Team Hydra), in 2008. Team Cylon have brought the robot out of retirement, planning to enter it into the Roaming Robots events. This raises the ather interesting possibility of both versions of Wheely Big Cheese actually fighting each other one day.
That's good- one, to know that it's going to a great team for the job of fixing both it and Rigor Mortis up, and two, the irony in how in the RW First World Championship, Mortis and Behemoth actually fought each other :gawe:Ooh, this sounds interesting. I might ask the first question- who did Mortis get sold onto after Team Bud?
Based upon this thread- http://www.fightingrobots.co.uk/fraforum/viewtopic.php?f=166&t=4980&hilit=mortis (http://www.fightingrobots.co.uk/fraforum/viewtopic.php?f=166&t=4980&hilit=mortis) it seems likely that it's now in the possession of Make Robotics, the builder(s) of Behemoth.
What are the best combat robotics sites to refer to when looking for local competitions? United States would be most important to me, but other countries would be good for other members. Whenever I google search I get a ton of dead links and old expired crap.UK:

What happened to Rosie the Riviter? i know that it was painted diffrently and entered in robotica, but that's all i know, and i'd like to know if it's in one piece or not.

could I do that with a chaos 2 pullback?Should be possible. The guys from the Chaos 2 team did it themselves, so I don't see why not.
D. No vehicle may, under any circumstances, present a hazard to the judges, spectators, or the opposing operator(s). No vehicle may in its operation cause damage to anything other than the opposing robot or the combat surface. Any vehicle that imperils the viewing areas will be ruled ineligible for competition.
F. Judges may restrict any function deemed excessively hazardous
G. For sumo events, a minimum of 30' (thirty feet) distance must be maintained between the edge of the combat stage and the audience, for safety reasons. No audience members are allowed within the safety zone, and children under the age of 16 are not allowed in the front row.
Vehicles may not compete out of weight class, due to safety considerations.
Any news about Killer Robots happening this year? Today's when they did it last year...
I can answer the latter, the answer is yes. It's no longer competitive but still well-upkept. Ian Watts is an engineering professor at the University of Brighton. In his course, the final project is to build a featherweight robot, and a tournament is held. After the winner is crowned, Ian wheels in Bigger Brother and smashes up all of his students' bots. Check it out (skip to 26 minutes for Bigger Brother):

Do Megabyte and Brutality still compete?
But how did it use them? It would just ram other robots.
Oh I had to think hard about this one. When I was there I am pretty sure I heard growling noises so yes. But this was nearly 10 years ago so my memory is a bit sketchy on it.

Do you have any cool stories or interesting anecdotes about being at Robot Wars?

God this is like skype all over again. I'll just list off whatever I can remember and you can judge for yourself
-There was another robot supposed to be in the Middleweight Final of Series 7. It was called Voodoo Child and made by the same guy who created Broadsword. However it never competed due to hideous exposed wiring and looking even more flimsy than it's predecessor. I don't think it even got through the door.
-Jayne Middlemiss made my sister cry. Purely because she wasn't Phillipa Forrester. Me and my father were happy talking to her, but my sister wasn't for some reason. Even though she had done the whole interview thing a year earlier for Extreme 2. I remember her saying to my father "I'm sorry! I'm making your children cry!". This is also probably the reason there are no pre-battle interviews for that match.
-The Typhoon guys were very nice. Contrary to popular opinion.
-The TAN guys were very nice aswell. So I might be slightly skewed when I say it's one of my favourite robots.
-In the pits, over the 2 times we were there, we were stationed near; Pussycat, Typhoon, Barborous 2 'n' a bit, Thermidor 2, Behemoth, TAN and possibly Dantomkia.
-Those remote control booths were like sodding ovens.
-I remember being smug because Phoenix (our second robot) was shaped in such a way Growler couldn't bite it. So instead it nearly got launched out by the floor flipper.
-At qualifying (Yes a middleweight bot had to do that, I think my father may have been trying to pass it off as a underweight heavy though.) I remember we faced a robot that was not dissimilar to Series 3 robot Armour Geddon. (http://robotwars.wikia.com/wiki/Armour_Geddon) I also remember seeing Shove and thinking it was the new house robot to be announced next series. And seeing The Mouse on a static display and wondering what the heck it was. I got to sit next to TerrorHurtz though and that was very cool.
I'll edit in stuff if I remember anymore. Please note this is from years ago so my memory is a bit rusty.
Yay for more Robot Wars info!
Do you know anything else about Voodoo Child aside from it not competing?

Awesome! I do appreciate the chance to pick your brain, as someone who never got the opportunity to see Robot Wars in-studio, this is all fascinating. Is there anything else interesting about Phoenix or Malc that we wouldn't know from watching their TV appearances?
This helped a LOT, but I still have some questions:
-Can I get the titanium pre-bent and cut to size? Depends, but it be easier to cut it your self.
-How would I cut UMHW plastic? Also, how would I put all the armor pieces together? You can cut it an ordinary hacksaw. You can put it together with Plastite screws (http://www.fastenal.com/web/products/detail.ex?sku=0142886), they're made just for plastics. In a pinch, though, wood screws will work also.
-Aren't Hobbyking parts poorly made? Luck of the draw. The Orange RX are used by many users here, and Turnigy products are at least decent.
-Where would I buy the Velcro? Any hardware store will have it. Super high strength can be found online (https://gametechmods.com/forums/www.homedepot.com/buy/velcro-industrial-strength-15-ft-x-2-in-tape-90198.html#.UKB1WYawV7k).
Also, some other notes:
-I had no idea copals used plastic gears, this info helped a lot.
-That tiny esc looks hard to work with, I wanted the sabertooth because it seems easy to use and there's a bunch of tutorial stuff for it at the robot marketplace. All the Tiny Esc needs is a little soldering work to use. They don't need any thing else, you can adjust them with the calibration if needed. The mixing can be done with either with the transmitter or the through a stand alone mixer (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__6321__TURNIGY_V_Tail_Mixer_Ultra_small.html)(Required if you want to use a gyro.)
I see:This helped a LOT, but I still have some questions:
Don't bother with Copals, they have plastic gears. I suggest the Finger Tech Sliver Spark motor. http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/0-FT-SSPARK-50.html (http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/0-FT-SSPARK-50.html), I have the Gold spark motor, and it works great. Sliver Sparks have bigger teeth, reducing the chance of striping.
Don't bother with the mounts, they won't fit the sparks, even if they did, you would have to bond the mounts with a lexan surface. If you really want a mount, use a finger tech mount.http://www.fingertechrobotics.com/proddetail.php?prod=ft-bearing-block (http://www.fingertechrobotics.com/proddetail.php?prod=ft-bearing-block). It comes with a ball bearing pressed in, so it won't cause to much strain on the motor shaft.
The wheels are fine.
Dave's hubs are fancy indeed, but the Finger Tech hubs(http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/0-FT-LITE-HUBS.html (http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/0-FT-LITE-HUBS.html)) will work just as well.
Avoid Tactic products. Use a Spektrum Dx5e(http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/0-SPM5500.html (http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/0-SPM5500.html)) with the Hobby King Orange rx(http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__11965__OrangeRx_R610_Spektrum_DSM2_6Ch_2_4Ghz_Receiver_w_Sat_Port_.html (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__11965__OrangeRx_R610_Spektrum_DSM2_6Ch_2_4Ghz_Receiver_w_Sat_Port_.html)). Costs less than that Tactic system, and will work far better.
That ESC is nice, but the Finger Tech Tiny ESC(http://www.fingertechrobotics.com/proddetail.php?prod=ft-tinyESCv2 (http://www.fingertechrobotics.com/proddetail.php?prod=ft-tinyESCv2)) is better. It works great, and are way lighter than the Saber tooth.
That battery is WAY over kill, that's a huge chunk of your allowed weight. A smaller battery(http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__18204__Turnigy_nano_tech_850mAh_4S_45_90C_Lipo_Pack.html (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__18204__Turnigy_nano_tech_850mAh_4S_45_90C_Lipo_Pack.html)) would be much better here.
You haven't selected a charger. I'd recommend the Turnigy Accucel-6 50 watt(http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__7028__Turnigy_Accucel_6_50W_6A_Balancer_Charger_w_accessories.html (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__7028__Turnigy_Accucel_6_50W_6A_Balancer_Charger_w_accessories.html)).
1/16 thick aluminum is way too thin, go with 1/4 thick UMHW plastic(http://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?pid=12550&step=4&showunits=inches&id=785&top_cat=181 (http://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?pid=12550&step=4&showunits=inches&id=785&top_cat=181)), easy to work with, super strong, and light weight.
1/8 Grade five titanium heat treated would work wonders for a good spinner killer plow. Check Titanium Joe(http://www.titaniumjoe.com/6al4v%20sheet.htm (http://www.titaniumjoe.com/6al4v%20sheet.htm))!
A good way to mount your stuff is high strength Velcro, of the highest quality.
Hope that helps you a little.

Thanks guys, I think I have everything now. Just one more thing:Shazbot has a better shape, its plow is attached to an arm, the bot it self is a box shape.also your robot shape is still stupid.Could you please explain? It's both invertible and uses a plow, like antweight champion ShazBot.
Are thwackbots legal in the 30lb Sportsman class?No, thwacks are not active weapons.

So am I right in thinking the wiring would look kinda like this?

\you take the plastic hub out of the lite flite to correctly mount to dave hubs. if they still don't quite fit try using a CA glue to secure them to the hub. (it is a total pain in the ass to get them off though).

I knew that (in fact I already have all the hubs assembled) and I kinda thought that's what you had to do to get them to stay on.
Plus, if it's a pain in the ass to get them off, then it'll be a pain in the ass for the opponent too :3
What exactly is the "point of no return"?
One last question
We were planning to return the charger we got to RobotMarketPlace, how would one go about doing that?
There are no returns on electronics items or on custom, made-to-order items (especially cut-to-order carbon fiber, custom battery packs, and custom cut metal products), unless there is a manufacturing defect. No returns will be accepted on items that have been modified or damaged by the buyer. Returns WILL NOT be considered if customer has been in possession of the item for 60 days or more. Please contact us to find out if your item may qualify for a return. Returned merchandise is subject to a minimum 15% restocking fee.
Oh. Okay, thanks.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0W6_7klFVRY# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0W6_7klFVRY#)

What kind of steel did Mike use on Kobalos?
Do you drench the shafts after you heat them as well? Or does the hot/cool cycle do a sufficient job of hardening the shaft on it's own?
Each shaft was heated to a bright orange using a torch then dropped lengthwise into the oil bath. After cleaning off the shafts I did a quick test hit on a spare piece to see how hard the shaft had gotten relative to an annealed piece of O1. The annealed piece bent 90 degrees, the hardened piece snapped off very cleanly. The second stage of the process was tempering. The three shafts and test piece were placed in an oven at somewhere between 450 and 500 degrees F and left to soak for 45 minutes.
What would be the easiest/cheapest way into robot combat? Im in the ukRobots Live! and Robot Wars (Roaming Robots) tour the UK. Well, they tour England but sometimes get lost and go to Swansea and Edinburgh.

But im using my computah supply now! :dumb)What would be the easiest/cheapest way into robot combat? Im in the ukThat depends on your location.
The cheapest way would probably be a feather weight wedge. I would recommend:
Drive: A pair of Robochallenge 12volt drill motors. I'm not from the UK, but this seems to be the most popular drive motor.
Wheels: Again, Robochallenge wheels, which are pre-made with the threads required.
ESC: A pair of BotBitz 85amp EScheaps. If you're feeling daring, you could hack the ESCs your self, but it's risky.
Radio: Hobbyking HK-T6A. Decent radio, but I would recommend the link cable to add mixing and the likes.
Battery: A pair of 7.2volt NIMH sticks. Lithium batteries are preferred, but they burst into flame if miss handled
Charger: Turnigy ACCUCELL-6. Needs a power supply, but you can use a computer supply if crafty.
Just a note playzooki I wouldn't 100% trust ribbs, most of his stuff he takes straight from ask aaron, which is kind of outdated.I'm using my own judgement here, usually I hit bulls-eyes, but when I miss, I somehow hit the car behind me.

Are battle antz allowed to compete with the antweights at Roaming robots?They're 100 grams overweight, if you can figure out how to lighten them, then yes.

What kind of metal do you guys use for antweight spinner weapons? I was toying with the idea of a custom made one from Kitbots but if I could just get a piece of metal cut and stuff it'd probably be cheaper.A single piece of machined steel, or an aluminum main body with steel impactors.

Specifications? You mean weight limits?Also the 75g fleaweight class.
Fairyweight = 150g
Antweight = 1lb
Beetleweight = 3lb
Mantis = 6lb (Not widely used tbh, i wouldn't make one as a first bot)
Hobbyweight = 12lb
Featherweight = 30lb
Lightweight = 60lb
Middleweight = 120lb
Heavyweight = 220lb
Super Heavyweight = 340lb (No longer an active weight class)
There's also a 15lb class for BotsIQ, which lots of schools do.
Oh hey, I know the guy that made those.Yeah, Joey McConnell.
You know he was on ARC right?yeah
okay any links to a good spin motor for a beetleweight?http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/KB-1000RPM.html (http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/KB-1000RPM.html)
And does anyone know if any live events happen in Australia ever? besides the exhib in sydney last october
So I can ask anything robot related?
Why did so many of the well known robots drop out of Robot War Series 7?
MOE's team still does FIRST coaching. No idea if they scrapped MOE or not.FIRST? As in a combat robot teaching centre, or robot combat? (I forgot what FIRST was...) Hopefully not.
FIRST does task-based robot events. Their founder doesn't like violence, or even the concept of winners and losers, so that should give you a sense of how likely it is that a FIRST event will involve combat. I would assume that Warhead still resides in the garage of Ian Lewis or Simon Scott.Thx. Nice to hear that Warhead is most likely still with the family! I wish we could see him pop up some time.
Why aren't there more black guys in robot combat? Like the only guys I've seen is the dude with dreads in the Demolisher team and one dude in Robotica who had this cool ass bot that got beaten in the fight to the finish. In thinking about it, I remeber seeing a a preview for last season's Battlebots, which showed the Giant Nut being hoisted by a pair of white hands, and realizing that that didn't spoil anything. One could argue that they were masculine looking, which ruled out Sweet Revenge, Chomp, and Plan X, but I don't think that would be much of a spoiler.

Strange question, but does anybody know what happened to Satan's Mutt, the UK featherweight built as a part of a challenge for the Gadget Show?Vanished into the either.

Do you guys know any in-depth combot making guides that are up-to-date? The Riobotz one is from way back in 2009 and the world has changed a lot since then.
I admit I'm a bit out of touch with robots these days, is brushless the default now or something?Do you guys know any in-depth combot making guides that are up-to-date? The Riobotz one is from way back in 2009 and the world has changed a lot since then.
The basics on the whole have not changed much. Components and methods have more-so. The discussions of brushed vs. brushless motors and how specifically to construct a robot are generally lost on someone without the understanding of robots and engineering that it provides. It taught me everything I needed to know in about 2016 to get me started, and know the questions to ask to get myself up to speed.
