Robotics Questions MEGATHREAD
« on: May 11, 2012, 01:17:27 PM »
This thread exists for several purposes:

1: Robot history related questions.
2: Robot component and design related questions.
3: Discussion of answers to said questions given on this site or any other site.

Keep the discussions civil and don't get personal. There are a lot of experienced builders around that can answer questions and we likely disagree on many key points. Flamewars will be nuked from orbit.

Anyone can answer a question, and several people can answer the same question. For history questions, do try to make sure you're answering accurately. For design questions, there's likely no "right" answer and they will more often than not be an opinion based answer.

Ooh, this sounds interesting. I might ask the first question- who did Mortis get sold onto after Team Bud?

Based upon this thread- http://www.fightingrobots.co.uk/fraforum/viewtopic.php?f=166&t=4980&hilit=mortis it seems likely that it's now in the possession of Make Robotics, the builder(s) of Behemoth.

what happened to chaos 2 after it quit rw
How you make Alarm Clock Pizza is:
Step 1: You buy an alarm clock from the store, and then you have to break it and put it in the sauce.
Step 2: Fold the sauce in 5 slices and put it in the dough.
Step 3: Paint the eggs with a pitcher of a clock showing what time you want to wake up and eat pizza for breakfast.
Step 4: Put the eggs in the dough.
Step 5: Make it flat into a round shape and draw the time you want on it.
Step 6: Put some old steel to prevent other peple from stealing it.
Step 7: Make it flat and cut into 60 slices 1 for each minute in 1 our.
Step 8: Put in the oven set the timer to 30048813.2884 seconds and put the temperature on 'Volcano' setting.
Step 9: If you think it is take to long, then get yor alarm clock and set it to now so that it will ring and you can take it out.
Step 10: Take it out uv the uvin wen it is redy and go to bed. In the morning eat pizza and also eat yor hands bi mistake.

It's still in George Francis's possession- it underwent a major overhaul after being heavily damaged by 13 Black to restore it to full working order, but it doesn't fight anymore, instead being on display every now and again.

What happened to Wheely Big Cheese? :3
Quote from:  RW Wiki

The Extreme 1/Series 5 version of Wheely Big Cheese that produced the infamously huge flip, sending Axe Awe over the arena side wall from near the centre of the arena, went to Team Xbotz from Wrexham in North Wales and was completely rebuilt, with new electronics, batteries, revised pneumatics and upgraded drive system. It is still used in various live events and educational presentations around the UK.
In addition, the original Series 4 Wheely Big Cheese chassis was also owned by Team Xbotz, before being sold to, and fixed up by, Team Cylon (now Team Hydra), in 2008. Team Cylon have brought the robot out of retirement, planning to enter it into the Roaming Robots events. This raises the ather interesting possibility of both versions of Wheely Big Cheese actually fighting each other one day.

That's good- one, to know that it's going to a great team for the job of fixing both it and Rigor Mortis up, and two, the irony in how in the RW First World Championship, Mortis and Behemoth actually fought each other   :gawe:

WBC is in no state to fight at the moment, and is in the hands of Team Hydra, who aren't showing any signs of renovating it.

Mortis, was definitely in hands of Team Bud, and as with WBC, needs work doing to it. I think they did have plans of re-building it, but at the time their priorities were tied in Envy and Thor. They've recently bought Kan-Opener and have started building a new robot Full Tilt, so it seems likely that they may have sold it. Not too sure who to though, though seems logical that it would have gone to Kane Aston/Ant Pritchard.

What are the best combat robotics sites to refer to when looking for local competitions?  United States would be most important to me, but other countries would be good for other members.  Whenever I google search I get a ton of dead links and old expired crap.

UK:
fightingrobots.co.uk
robotwars101.org
roamingrobots.co.uk
robotslive.co.uk
robochallenge.co.uk

Obviously, I'm not so sure about the US, but I would have thought that the FRL is a good place to start.

http://www.buildersdb.com/index.asp is the main registration site for most US events
http://robogames.net/index.php should have RoboGames/Combots info
http://battlebots.forumotion.com/ usually has educational event info
http://www.gonrl.org/ also has educational event info

http://buildersdb.com/ -- most registration for US events is done here

http://nerc.us/ -- North East Robotics Club, puts on two events a year in PA. Motorama in Harrisburg and Franklin Cup in Philly

I'm sorry but I don't really research what happened to robots that fought years ago... but typically what happens to a robot after it's retired is it gets gutted and parts end up in other creations or sold.

Rosie The Riveter, along with its brother robots Juggerbot and Tilha, were dismantled and recycled for a full scale model of the Mars rovers.
