One more question:

Zipdragon's wiring picture thingy uses a different receiver than the one I currently have (I'm using this one), and mine comes with a plug which I assume you put in the "battery" port. Do I still have to wire up the receiver that way? And how exactly would that be done?

That's the bind plug, you use it to link your receiver to your transmitter.
You have to remove it for normal use after you bind the radio.

Oh. Okay, thanks.

How exactly do I bind it?

It looks different, but it's literally the same radio with different stickers. Though, you might want to check first, your radio may already be bound.

What kind of steel did Mike use on Kobalos?

I used 3/32" thick unhardened 4130 steel, which was massive, massive overkill. Something in the range of 1/16" Ti or steel should be plenty. 3/32" will let you countersink larger screws, which is nice. I actually had to round off the top of the 4-40 flatheads on Algos to keep from having the flatheads catch on other bots as they go up the wedge.

This gives the cleanest shot of the wedge on Kobalos- https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/77206KobalosPowered.jpg

This is how I'm doing the wedges now- http://www.instructables.com/id/One-Pound-Fighting-Robot-Algos/step4/Assembly/ and http://www.instructables.com/id/One-Pound-Fighting-Robot-Algos/step5/Shaft-Replacement-and-Hardening/ (The latter shows the rounded flat heads)

I've become a big fan of using Nutstrip for this sort of thing, as it means you can quickly replace it if it gets damaged and you're only having to work with flat parts unless you want to complicate things, so part fabrication can go much quicker.

Do you drench the shafts after you heat them as well? Or does the hot/cool cycle do a sufficient job of hardening the shaft on it's own?

Quote
Each shaft was heated to a bright orange using a torch then dropped lengthwise into the oil bath. After cleaning off the shafts I did a quick test hit on a spare piece to see how hard the shaft had gotten relative to an annealed piece of O1. The annealed piece bent 90 degrees, the hardened piece snapped off very cleanly. The second stage of the process was tempering. The three shafts and test piece were placed in an oven at somewhere between 450 and 500 degrees F and left to soak for 45 minutes.

Since then, I've gotten better at the initial hardening and have to take them up to 800-900F to get the proper hardness after tempering.

I'm going to start saving money so I can build a robot.
What weightclass should it be and what would be the easiest bot type to build? 2wd wedgebot?
Oh I'll be doing some banging.......

Yeah an antweight wedge is probably the cheapest course of action. I'd recommend the new Titan Tech wedge kit, it gives you everything you need for an antweight for 200 bucks, and doesn't need any soldering. Unless you want to take the FireArrow route and make the chassis from scratch :P

Also would recommend the two kits from FingerTech:
The Viperhttp://www.fingertechrobotics.com/proddetail.php?prod=ft-kit-viper(The one I own, very nice kit that was made even better with the wire blocks)
The Lifter/Clamper kithttp://www.fingertechrobotics.com/proddetail.php?prod=ft-kit-servo-combat(Based on the bots made by Team Misfit, the guys that made Micro Drive and The Bomb)

I don't know where you'd fight it, being from western Canada.

I really like that lifter, but the Titan looks easiest.
@Andy: There are events in Seattle where I can compete.
