Remember when we were discussing how there were no US front-hinged flippers?

Strange Brew was originally going to be named Ground Zero, but after the 9/11 terrorist attacks it was decided that the name was no longer appropriate

and yet, but a month after 9/11 we got:

I'll give it two seasons if they're lucky.

I don't see why everybody is so obsessed with the concept of massive humanoid robots fighting each other. Vehicular type combat has always been more exciting, at least in my opinion.

<bleep>ing Real Steel, they're like the AIDS virus of Robot Combat. What is wrong with people?  So this is a show with two humanoids with absolutely no design freedom doing the exact same things that humans do?  A decade ago we had shows where 100 kg anything's, built by common men with scrounged pocket change, did whatever it took to kill the other bot, and didn't have to abide by rules of decency or clean fighting.  Somehow I feel like we've gone backwards.

It is going backwards. A competition between two humanoids standing in place and punching each other kills all chances for ingenuity and creativity and design. That's what was so unique about robot combat when it went mainstream at the turn of the decade, the fact that everything was all remotely vehicular allowed for a lot of design freedom and inventiveness, when it came down to creating your robots weapon systems and what not. You don't have any of that freedom when working with a humanoid design, because everything is already there for you. The builders don't have to design a cool flipping arm or a unique axe type weapon or whatever, because the human body design already has the parts that do the same thing.

I didn't even watch Real Steal. It looked like Gundams 2 electric boogaloo.

I don't think it's even open for the public.  It won't last more than one season; how long do you think people will watch a 20 million dollar version of Rock'em Sock'em robots?

A prank that I'd love to see is if someone snuck backstage and programmed the robots to kick each other in the crotch.

Two people have expressed interest on the other forum I'm on - and one of them is a fellow admin, so [swear] 'im. Luckily, I just copypaste Sonny's comment to teach 'em a lesson.

There are boxing robots at Robots Live and the crowd do seem to like them... but only once a year

They're a novelty first time around. After that they are pretty boring (general roboteer consensus)

Hell, they don't even need massive metal poles holding them up.
