This thing real?
Very much real.
Still a bit worried with how much time Roboters are give to build a Robot (Still the same about 2 months) despite the fact some are still being built and some haven't been built as of yet. Also, I do like the fact they want Feather Weights to show off in side events but if anyone can remember back the Feather Weight events in Series 7, then you know what I mean by this.

Might be reading too much into this, but could the introduction of featherweights mean there are less heavyweight battles in an episode? Perhaps in the way of ditching the round robin...?
Title: Re: Robot Wars - Series Ten Discussion Thread
Post by: RageTester on April 23, 2017, 12:35:53 PM
Round robin is good, what should be replaced is the 2 winners from round robin fighting each other right after round robin, I would rather see both of them go against other group bots 1st vs 2nd and 2nd vs 1st...
the proper way like hockey, soccer and other sports are doing it.
In fact round robin could be better replacement for group battle, cuz there is often teaming against other bots, and 3 way fight in grand finale episode is just ridiculous...
Every bot having at least 3 fights, if they can fix them on time, sure would be more fun!

The big teaser we were all supposed to be getting hyped for that doesn't actually tease anything.
No Series Ten footage here, but there is one fairly obvious confirmed competitor, so that's something.
Also, date officially confirmed, cool.

It's a nice little trailer the BBC put together to build up the hype of series 10 without spoiling the series, and I'm looking forward to finally seeing series 10 of Robot Wars. But unfortunately with me being at university without a television license, looks like I'll have to find somewhere else to watch Robot Wars for the time being.

BBC has such a weird way of making trailers. The ones for series 9 were quite good but this and series 8 got me not hyped at all

Yeah the new Carbide trailer is no good. It's basically just a clip show of hits set to Johnny Cash, like I said on Reddit hell I could've done that on my own and uploaded it just to mess with people. I was at least hoping for a non-spoiler trailer that shows some of the series 10 competitors, is that too much to ask? :(

I still liked the trailer. Granted it's not as spectacular as previous trailers, but it didn't need to be. It was just to get us hyped up a little. Plus I feel if they showed us actual S10 footage it'd have spoiled too much.

So do you think Carbide will become the next Chaos 2, being the second robot to ever successfully defend their crown? Or will the new field of competitors prove too strong a match for them? Poll added to the top, cast your vote.

Without knowing what the new competitors are and what changed with the old ones it's hard to predict what will happen. I mean it's chances are good but that's all I know

I would love to see a Nostalgia side event with people bringing back some of the old ones that are outdated by modern standards. Firestorm being the one I want to see (Chaos 2 and Hypnodisc would be nice to see them one last time)

Even more updates added to the competitor spreadsheet. Newer competitor images for various Series Ten competitors, International Championship competitors, and robots that did not compete.

Also, with the release of Robot Wars: The Official Handbook (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Robot-Wars-Official-Handbook/dp/1407184709/ref=pd_cart_vw_2_6?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=1407184709&pd_rd_r=SY3MVA854ZNS6TRYZC1B&pd_rd_w=Q8bE1&pd_rd_wg=jUaE7&psc=1&refRID=SY3MVA854ZNS6TRYZC1B) the format of Series Ten has been officially revealed.

A release on the BBC Media Centre also confirms the air date as 22nd October but does not yet give a time, likely 7.00 pm or 8.00 pm, though.
Heat A will contain:

New arena hazard in the form of Fog Of War also confirmed. Pressing the tyre in the arena now has three options, the Doom Dial can swing to the left to open The Pit, it can swing to the right and glow orange to unleash the Rogue House Robot, or it can swing to the right and glow blue to activate the Fog Of War, which fires multiple huge jets of CO2 into the arena and in front of the control booths from the arena corners and under the arena tyre, blinding the roboteers and preventing them from being able to control their robots well.

Very likely to be more news on the way soon. The full lineup has been known for quite a while too, so would it be okay to put up the poll asking who you all think will win, or still not yet?

I was at filming and I can confirm that the Fog of War is a crap hazard. All it does is stop the fight completely for ten seconds because nobody can see.

Also, that's one convoluted format.

Seriously? I did this with my toy robots when I was 10. Why would you ever do this? At least battlebots' rumbles were non-binding towards the actual tournaments.

They finally move on from the round robin crap. Like in the original run: series 3 changes everything. The 10 way rumble and fog of war make it look like a game show rather than robotic combat. What happens if the swarm and Crackers N Smash get to the 10 way rumble?

The rumble grows.

Watch the Kegs make it too while we're at it.

Can't say im a fan of a lot of aspects of this series. The Fog of War sounds gimmicky, the Heat format seems convoluted, the fact its the smallest RW Series ever blows as well. Can't lie the Rumble does sound fun though.

You people just can't stop complaining, can you?

Fog Of War lasts for around five seconds and clears away instantly. It's not like thick cloud of smoke or some sh** that just hangs around in the arena until it all gets vented out like when Chompalot carked it. It's literally just like someone's emptied a fire extinguisher. Plus it doesn't completely obscure the view of the arena, it just makes it harder to see.

Also the new format is pretty good, everyone is guaranteed two fights even if you lose both of them, and it's much less likely to produce matches that have already happened in the Heat. Also because of the new format it was roughly one round filmed per day, meaning more repair time for the roboteers and less chance of zombie robots coming back just to get destroyed again and again.

Can you really blame them for adding stuff like the fog of war? It's what the original series did to keep ratings up (case in point: adding a house bot almost every series, drop zone, CO2 spouts, Craig Charles slowly realizing and accepting his pyrophilia by lining half the arena walls with flamethrowers, etc). The intent is fairly clear that they're trying to throw flashy things in to retain the TV audience's attention, because keep in mind that these viewers aren't the same diehard fans that'd drive out to see, say, Robogames live.

What happens if the swarm and Crackers N Smash get to the 10 way rumble?
My guess is that the commentators will really have to put in some work for their paycheck. :dumb)

edit: That format looks really confusing at first, but hopefully it makes more sense in motion than it does on paper.

The format is way simpler than any of you are giving it credit for. It's like having a losers bracket just for round 1 - in fact it's basically the same format we ran at beetle champs to ensure everyone got at least 2 fights and it was great!

So excited for the rumble too, it's gonna be mental!

My votes:
Title: Re: Robot Wars - Series Ten Discussion Thread
Post by: RFS on October 12, 2017, 06:09:17 PM
In no particular order, I voted for:

1. Aftershock -- Landed tons of solid blows last series and it took Carbide to literally shear its armor off and throw it through the wall to stop it. I'm thinking back to how utterly demolished Aftershock left Sabretooth last series and it looks like there's a lot of opportunities to do it again this time around.
2. Terrorhurtz -- I feel like John Reid has been long overdue to come up out from behind and surprise everyone. Supposedly its armor has been upgraded to something 1.2 cm thick? In any case it's beaten Carbide before and with the right driving skill can do it again. Beta was all over Tombstone at BattleBots.
3. Eruption -- Voted in because it was last series' runner-up. IMO, Eruption is a better flipper than Apollo and has a better driver, better armor, and overall a better design. Carbide vs. Eruption was very close and with the modified tournament setup for this series I think it could go all the way.
4. Carbide -- Obligatory re-vote for the current champion for no real reason. We're also currently living in the age of the horizontal spinner where bots like Carbide and Tombstone are dominating the scene.
5. Donald Thump -- WILL MEME MAGIC STRIKE AGAIN?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Things they didn't show:
Apex actually broke the side wall in their Group Battle. It happened virtually as soon as the fight started. Apex spun up, bounced awkwardly off Terrorhurtz, and skidded away into the wall by the right hand entry gate, popping off a panel. If you look at the right hand side you'll see a gash in the wall, that's where Apex hit.
Will Thomas was fairly involved with the Track-Tion team (since he's their teacher and stuff) and was interviewed by Angela after the Semi Final against Rapid.

On another note, I only just noticed Dead Metal has Yellow lights and Yellow illuminated eyes.. nice touch, is that new for this series or have I just been weirdly un-observant?

All in all, another good series in the books, would be nice for a longer season to get signed off but I hope the ratings keep rising to the mainstream highs the original series had. Back into hibernation I go...

Finally ended up watching this.  Love it just as much as I did when I was young.  A few comments overall:

-Multibots officially suck.  I don't care what philosophy you're trying to push, they are ineffective against a machine 2 or more times its size.

-Vertigo (Michael Oates) looks like Logic.

-Format is fixed appropriately I think.

-John Reid is slowly going senile.

-They need to take a longer break if they're going to make another series in order to get more competitors.  I don't want to see the same gang of bots in the final every time.

-I really do hope they keep making theses.

There are enought teams that want to enter. So it's the shows fault to have such a small field of competitors
Title: Re: Robot Wars - Series Ten Discussion Thread
Post by: Badnik96 on December 28, 2017, 03:53:08 AM
yeah there isnt a lack of teams that want to take part, there is however a lack of space on the show. if the bbc wants to be generous and provide funding for a larger season, then we can have some real fun.

I know this might be an irrelevant point as I'm no roboteer, but I think with some of the spinners out there at the moment I really wouldn't want to spend a lot of time and money on something that could easily end up in several bin bags

Who were you before?

And wasn't Mazakari called Mazakari before as well? Seems odd to change it back.

Formerly Kurt Wylde, then just Kurt, now a total change to Philippa.

I wasn't sure how the name change went for Maz but he was definitely Merrick for a while.
