They brought an unfinished robot to the qualifiers, and regardless of whether or not they were offered a position, couldn't finish their robot in time. It's unfortunate, but by Series 7, most robots had strong enough armour to stand up to that tanto blade so I don't imagine that it would have gotten that far.
