Favorite Real Combat Robots?
« on: June 10, 2009, 06:46:06 PM »
What were everyone's favorite real robots? Was it on BattleBots, Robot Wars, Robotica, or something else? What weight class (if applicable)?

My favorites were:

Ziggo - BattleBots - Lightweight
El Diablo - BattleBots - Middleweight
Biohazard - BattleBots - Heavyweight

And there was one on Robot Wars that I liked. It didn't do very well, but I liked it. It had wood for armor, and I can't remember the name of it.

Then there were a couple from Robotica, too. Spring Breaker was one of them. It had an awesome paint job, but it got knocked out in the quarterfinals. And the there was one named "Run Amok", it used a steering system from a junk lawn mower. It seems like it was fairly competitive, but I think got knocked out in the semi-finals.

So what were your favorite ones?

Razor from RW was my favorite, only because it was killing one of the house bots.
Gravity's flipper was awesome.
From Battlebots, I think Son of Whyachi is my favorite, as well as Nightmare (who doesn't love a VS with a massive disc???).

I made a mistake...

Run Amok was the winner of Robotica that year.

And it really should be, sorry about that.

Warhead, one of the robots to beat Nightmare, Storm 2 was the last world robot wars champion, I think.

My favorite bot is Megabyte. Thing is crazy.

that would be correct, never got a rematch against Typhoon 2 since it got eliminated round 1 due to spin up failure

There was a Vlad the Impaler II? Or is that just the one that had the self-righting mechanism?

Yeah, it was in the last televised season of Battlebots. It was basically a heavyweight version of Vladiator.

Everyone likes to throw around robots that had killer awesome weaponry and were featured in all of the commercials, I was much more of a fan of the really weird robots.

Mauler is one of the few really popular robots that I liked, mostly because the builders were most likely legally insane and also because after season 1 Mauler ceased to win any fights because all it did was blow up and self destruct. The fight where it showed Killerhurtz a thing or two in season 1 will always be one of the best moments in BattleBots - "that was real gourmet damage". Indeedy.

Everything by the Scrap Daddy team was something I really liked. The team leader (Mark Bradford) was a metal work artist and basically owned a scrap metal dump where he found all of the parts for his robots. He didn't spend a lot of money on his stuff, which for me really epitomizes the BattleBots creed. Minion and Biohazard were cool and all, but pretty boring to be honest and they looked manufactured. Scrap Daddy's creations were a little more personal and even though LW 55 had the everliving heck beat out of it by Ziggo I enjoyed Surplus's fight against Wedge Of Doom, a fight he clearly won but it seemed the judges gave to the more expensive and crappier "manufactured" robot.

Ginsu was a Super Heavyweight made by the two guys who created BattleBots. Normally one might think "hey that's not fair they can't enter because they made the event" and you'd be correct... however Ginsu was a special kind of robot. It fell apart really easily so really that argument holds no ground. Ginsu made appearances in Season 1 through 3 where its chains just randomly fell off; oh, and it started losing saw blades too just for the heck of it. When your robot starts losing chains while fighting Jay Leno's chin robot you know you really screwed up the design somewhere.

I really liked Bender from the Heavyweight class because the team had faith in their robot but NEVER WON A SINGLE FIGHT EVER. 0-5 is what Bender ended his BattleBots career with, which is kinda sad but funny at the same time. It was a nice design (spinning blade tilted down at an angle) but just failed for whatever reason. All the time. In season 5 it was given a total overhaul with a big mean looking saw blade with 2 big teeth on it... and it promptly lost instantly when it was flipped over within 10 seconds of the fight starting. Bender showed up at the most recent BattleBots event and it can only be described now as "terrifying".

http://benderbot.net/ (few pics down, giant lawnmower blade)

Although ironically enough the team mentions their first fight was against the dreaded Megabyte... and then there's no more posting after that. I think Bender just went 0-6.

My favorite robot ever in the history of BattleBots though was StewBot, the lightweight from season 2.0. It was a goddamn remote controlled truck covered in Legos. It was single-handedly the ballsiest entry ever and achieved "f***ing hilarious" status when Crusher put it into the newly beefed up Pulverizer.

R.I.P. StewBot

Fun sidenote, the CUAD the Crusher team (or the driver and main builder at least) is in the furry fandom. He sold all of his robots for fursuit money. That's pretty much blasphemy... but he's a cool guy so whatever.

Wasn't there another lego bot called Recycle-o-tron or something?

I'd have to say my favorite real bots are Snake, which I've never gotten a good video of, Complete Control, because the design is genius, and Huggy Bear, because it's a lateral Ccmple Control:biggrin:

Wrong. Bender has a 2-6 fight record, wining against Space Ape and Beta.

My favourites were frenZy, because it was just so fun to watch, Dr. Inferno Jr., simply because it looked cool, Snake because it was flat out badass, Atomic Wedgie, and Complete Control.

Awr, Bender actually won against someone? Darn now it's not as funny.

edit: Didn't Beta lose by forfeit? I didn't count that.
