Checking out the site, the filming dates are pencilled in for March 24-April 9 2018, shooting in Los Angeles, CA. There are some new rules in the rulebook as well, namely a maximum tip speed of 370 ft/s (250 mph), and also allowing robots to go slightly over the weight limit (10 lbs over, max) so long as the only reason they are over the weight limit is due to purely cosmetic (ie, not armour, not a weapon, not entanglement) accessories and decorations.

Also, regarding the filming happening very soon...

Because of this short timeframe, we have already picked the majority of robots for the series (Your old favorites and some exciting, new bots). However, there are still some slots left.

If (and only if) you are capable of having a robot ready by early March, and you and your team are available for the two week + shooting schedule in late March, early April, then you may go ahead and submit an application using our online registration system here:

That's not a lot of time for a new team to build a Heavyweight robot for the event, but it's possible for a few teams to build a robot within the strict time limit before the event if they really work straight on it, seeing that this happen with the reboot of Robot Wars. But it's nice to hear the news for the fans of the show to rejoice after over a year and a half waiting.

If you read Phillipa's other post you'd know that they already told several teams months ago and hence they've already started work on upgrading/building new bots.

I'm aware that the article said about a lot of familiar faces for the season. But still, I was more apply my point to newer teams that do want to take part, but not having a lot of time to try and get a robot ready for the event unless they hastily build the robot for the competition.

You know that applications never closed, right? People have been sending stuff since Season Two ended just because they were able to. Also, plenty of people build their robots in advance of any series being announced since they can also take them along to live events and stuff if they really want to. Also also, Robot Wars had a pretty similar timeframe, and that got plenty of new teams and robots. Also also also, they specifically say "Your old favorites and some exciting, new bots." which just illustrates my first point about applications never closing.

****ing. Yes. Its about time Battlebots got another season, and the fact that it isn't going to get geoblocked/regionblocked/whateverblocked due to it airing around the world just makes it that whole load better in my books.

And now comes the long wait... holy hell, I'm hyped! c^_^c

I'm intrigued by the new rules. I wonder if the maximum tip speed rule is a reaction to HellaChopper. Certainly they won't be the only ones affected, though (I believe Nightmare's tip speed was 300mph, and Tombstone's was 350mph?) And the 10lb cosmetics allowance sounds pretty cool too, bots can squeeze every last ounce out of the weight limit without compromising on looks.

I'm really looking forward to this.

Oh cool. Now maybe they can fix that damn stupid judging criteria that pretty much killed good driving and strategy in Season 2.

First hints at how the tournament of BattleBots 2018 will be structured, courtesy of Robotic Death Company.

Quote from: Robotic Death Company
The format will be like no others in Combat robot history. Each episode will be like a UFC fight with a fight card and main event. After an equal number of fights for all contestants, each robot will be ranked and seeded into a final tournament.

As someone who doesn't know anything about UFC fights, fight cards, or main events in this kind of context, what does this all mean? How is the structure laid out and how well will this translate from humans to robots?

It probably means there's going to be a handful of matches each week, randomly picked until they have all fought. Then ranked and seeded based on how they performed and then organised into a tourney that way. UFC tend to have different weightclasses fighting and then a main event, but unless BB come out and say otherwise, I think it will just be heavyweight bots fighting for a few weeks to decide the seeding.

Which seems like a good way of having more competitive fights and giving bots more airtime.
