Contests / Re: VOTE BOTM APRIL 2017
« on: April 03, 2017, 11:30:20 AM »
My thoughts:
1. What the Mundo?! HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?! It is a cool design.
2. Reminds me of Clawed Hopper! It has character, I'm not sure how but it suits the name.
3. Looks groovy! Nice and simple colour scheme!
4. It's cool...not sure what else to say. xD
5. Clever design...and scary! Looks like it could actually work really well!
6. Reminds me of Icewave: really digging the design and colours!
7. Interesting design, not really seen anything like this before.

You really do come up with weird but interesting designs! Most of your robots are brightly coloured and stand out from each other which is cool! Hollowed Soul has to be my favourite though due to the black armour it has, suits its name!

Here's a post of some tourney / pack entries. First up all of my LDAI submissions

(Image removed from quote.)

(Image removed from quote.)

Top left - SHW 1181.5KG: Finity III. Doubled up the bar to 2 Moros blades since the original HW version. Switched the drive to NPC fasts rather than regulars, switched all of the panels to steel and gave it a pole like Naryar suggested ages ago to assist self-righting.

Top middle - HW 795.8 KG: Bocuma II. This one you've seen before. Some minor changes have been made including refining the wedge to be more effective after its loss to Avalanches A.G.E Mk 3, and shuffling the drive motors around a bit.

Top right - CW 598.2 KG: Kiteracer II. Pretty much completely rebuilt since you last saw it. Longer wheelbase so its more controllable, and the armor panels are now sloped at the rear to match the slope of the chassis. Lifter has also been changed as the SMIDSY style jaws, while cool looking, were pretty much useless.

Bottom right - MW 397.2 KG: Spectrum. This one got redesigned about 4 times. Originally started out as a lifter believe it or not. Now a reasonably effective tribar spinner. Flatmotor for the weapon because it's all that would fit.

Bottom middle - LW 247.2 KG: Carcan. Pretty happy with this one, even if it is basically beetleweight sized. Very shortl VDMA for the axe and twin slimbodies with colsons for drive, pretty nippy and self rights reasonably well despite being incredibly slab-sided. Axe is only really effective if the wedge is underneath you, which is unlikely to happen due to it not being a skirt hinge wedge.

Bottom right - BW 173.9 KG: Blockbuster. The less said about this one the better. Flipper is very powerful for a BW due to it being powered by a VDMA very short. However the bot is extremely unstable when driving and has a very hard time getting under stuff. Pretty much confirms that I can't build for sh** below LW (Though it could easily be argued that I can't build for sh** at any weight class :laughing)

And one of my two entries into D.O.T's tournament. My HW is basically a slightly modified version of Ovid II, since renamed to Enceladus. My CW however is entirely new.

It's a wedged VS with a srimech called Sequoia, weighs 591.9 KG, but it's a bit different to the brutus/ witch doctor style. 4WD slimbodies because it's the only thing that would fit. Disc is powered by a Perm 132. Pics below:

I'm liking the blue and black theme here! Reminds of Panzer Mk.4/Black and Blue. Nice range of weaponry too!

Just so people know I've been listening, I've made modifications to the robots that needed them: I'll probably be rebuilding some of these but these are the versions I have entered into DemonOfTomorrow's tournament as of today!

I'll probably make some more robots soon and post them here.

Any other feedback is appreciated! Thank you!

Not bad. Though for some of Robot's like Bruiser, the chassis is too large. You could make the chassis smaller to save weight so you can use it for more weapons or anything else that might take your fancy like replacing the single mace with a chain of spikes. Just remember to build your chassis around your parts, not the parts for the chassis if you need an idea.
For Devorcatrz, don't use Standard axe heads for the teeth! There are more powerful weapons components in the game that can deal more damage than the axes head like Typhoon teeth for example, if you struggling to put them on, try shave off some weight like replacing the heavier bicycle wheels for more smaller wheels with better grip like shiny hubs or something. Also for your Cruiser, avoid using the PC265 batteries, you get enough power for your cruiser using some of the long black batteries or a couple of ant batteries and these will save you some weight of your Robots, you should have enough power to last a three minute match in most cases.

Overall, not a bad start into DSL IRL. As you learn, you builds will get better over time so don't worry about it. Also what Armour do you use anyway?

Thank you for the advice! I tend to use the Steel armour across my robots apart from Crumplezone which I picked aluminium for.

I gotta say I really like these, especially with the team theme you've given them!  One thing to note is that piglets aren't meant to be drive motors (see: the first two), consider switching those.  How well does the train move?  6 slimbodies doesn't seem like it ought to be enough for a SHW.

Thank you! I've changed the motors as you and others have recommended! Bane Train is a bit sluggish...what motors would you recommend?

Solid start. Nice theme to them.

Some tips on the first two while I've got time;

Goblin - Piglets for drive is a no-no. Slimbodies are probably the best bet there.

Bruiser: Probably wouldn't use a Mace on that piston. Maybe an Iron Spike to keep the aesthetic of the others. This and Goblin are both underpowered as well. Needs another battery, or one big one.

I'll come back and give advice on the others when I've got time, but I'm a big fan of General Orcatraz and Bane Train.  :thumbup

Thank you, seems like a few people like the theme I've got going on! Changed the motors, added/changed batteries and also gone for an Iron Spike for Bruiser for consistency like you said! I look forward to the rest of your advice!

solid HW, CW , LW and MW also Bane Train is adorable :P

Thank you...STOP CALLING THE ULTIMATE TRAIN OF DOOM AND DESTRUCTION ADORABLE, HE WILL TRAMPLE OVER YOU!  ::2mad

So I've been getting into DSL more recently (thanks to Demon's latest tournament for really kicking my motivation into gear!) They are probably not the best designs as I'm still learning, some have quite a bit of open space/areas but hey, I'm welcome to feedback!

Is everyone all right with the rules of this tournament? Just making sure everyone's fine before I cart this off to signups.

yeah didn't make my post lighthearted/just a joke enough. sorry man, your logic is fair enough.

No worries, I was a bit vague myself by saying it was just a red 259! It was certainly very good and did some damage.

Worst Robot: Hell Spawn 1.2 (I'm honestly surprised this hasn't got a vote considering its no-win record. Its a shame, too, considering it could have done better had there been some tweaks.)
Finally someone agree to my embarrassment in bot building! Yet, I little surprised why no one actually thought about voting this bot for worst robot. It could just be because Hell Spawn 1.2 just happens to be that one bot that constantly slips under the radar, because of other Robots looking a lot worst than Hell Spawn like Red Claw or Skellachopper.

It's because Hell Spawn isn't total sh**. It's got a terrible record, but at least it looks decent, whereas compared to all other voted or considered robots:
  • The Sneaky Poke: Great banter, but... yeah. I'd kinda like to see something serious from Adam, because when you produce the PM's pulverizor, you do have some standards and expectations to live up to.
  • Tankslapper: Good replica but **** me this is a boring robot, it's literally a wedge with an ocasional flail. We've the Pay Tribute with Replicas thread for a reason Kurt.
  • Serenity in Murder: It's a box with a disc. Yawn.
  • Red Claw: Meh. Just not all that good. Bland and rushed.
  • Crash: 09 cmon this isn't the worst robot, but Crash in my opinion wasn't that funny tbh.
  • Hornbob: This robot is damn good, what are you smoking Orc?
  • Skellachopper: I kinda like it honestly but 3 maces and a somewhat bland design makes it possible to see why it got voted.

To quote Demon from the Discord chat: "Performance, looks, whatever you want to judge on" Hornbob did well but like I said, in my opinion it's just a red 259. No offense meant. I've never heard of Tankslapper before which is why I didn't vote it for the same reason. :P

hello friend ; )! these are quite nice and funny for your first bots they can be made smaller though

Hey pal! ;D Thank you, size will definitely be something I decrease in the future.

In regards to an earlier suggestion, I made a Paul Heyman lightweight bot! Yet to be named so if you have any suggestions for a robot pun based name for Heyman, please go ahead and tell me! :D Also feedback on the bot is appreciated too!

I don't know about y'all, but this kid instantly gains kudo's from me for the "Bot Lesnar" name. You need to make a LW, Paul Heyman-bot also.

Thank you! I will edit all my robots accordingly!

Thank you, seems like quite a few people like the name! That Paul Heyman idea is fantastic, I can't believe it's never crossed my mind! Thanks!

Hi, welcome to the forums!

One of the first things you'll want to make sure that you do on every bot is build to the weight limit. For example, Flippernation has over 300kgs of weight that you haven't used, and that weight could be used for extra weapons, armour or anything useful really. If you're looking for some more advanced advice, this page has some great advice for newcomers.

Thank you very much!

Thanks for the advice, I'll take a look now! :D

It was an amazing tournament! Here are my votes!

Best Robot: Scavenger (able to throw robots out with force, also a cool design!)
Worst Robot: Hornbob Fury (It's 259...but red? Forgive me!)
Coolest Robot: Skellachopper (It's a spinning skull of death and doom, looks awesome!)
Unluckiest Robot: Telemachus (Was orignally going to make this the boring robot but I think that's unfair. It is powerful but its reliability let it down.)
Luckiest Robot: IWTFRC (Got through on a wildcard and became the overall winner. Well played!)
Most Destructive Robot: Dominotrix (Overlooked this robot at first, it caused mayhem! That massive blow on Tortuga Ninja that sent it flying was amazing!)
Least Realistic Robot: Diatomic (It's a cool design...I'm just not sure on how realistic it is.)
Funniest Robot: The Sneaky Poke (It's a robot...with a stick. Not effective but hey, the simplicity is funny!)
Most Boring Robot: Crash (Cool design...but it just fell apart constantly. After that, robots just kept playing with the pieces!)
Best Battle: Losers Bracket Semi-Finals – Sallymandra vs Tortuga Ninja vs Hornbob Fury vs Dominotrix (4 different spinners...complete mayhem. Hornbob Fury didn't impact the fight a lot but good grief, the other robots ripped each other to shreds!)
