will any of the old bots be upgraded?

I'm thinking about it, since some of the robots from the V1.5 "Radio F Software" team have been rebuilt into better versions for the new pack (LaunchPad and Thumperizer have new versions in the "Twilight Foundry PLATINUM" team). I'm considering either making 1 or 2 teams of updated robots from the older packs, or alternatively going back into the previous versions and fixing some minor bugs and problems that some bots have.

My first robot was Balls of Steel:

(the top one)

Balls of Steel is being rebuilt in my final AI pack as "Balls of Steel Revolution". It has the same set of spinners as a weapon but also features this crazy looking train-plow assortment of spikes to feed people into the spinners.

My "true" first robot was a test bot I made to figure out how RA2 worked. I named it "CrapBot 2000" and it was basically a weaponless yellow circle with 1 front panel painted red and 1 rear painted green and a blue top. The driving was wired incorrectly, it was a mess. :P Just for testing though, and that was before I learned how to take pics.

CB2K is also being reincarnated in that pack as "CrapBot: The Reckoning". It has "the same" paint job and design, except its weapon is an overhead spinning mass with Spike Strips.

edit: Here it is, I guess when I tacked a weapon onto it I had figured out screenshots. I also forgot what I originally painted it I guess.

nice to see remakes of the old bots

does anyone else have the disc and packaging? not the downloaded one?

Mine's from the store. I bought it the day it came out - I had it reserved. :P I lose the CD from time to time but it resurfaces after some searching,

Here's a promo image for you all, one complete team thus far. It's not named, but it's the RA1 recreations.

There's a few other odds and ends that are being worked on, the "Twilight Foundry PLATINUM" team (6 rebuilds of my most popular/best robots) needs to have skins made before it's done (LaunchPad 2, No Escape Reincarnated, HACK!, CrapBot: The Reckoning, Balls of Steel Revolution, and Thumperizer 10 Yr (-1) Anniversary).

The "RA2 Greats" team (for lack of a better name), aka the Stock AI Revisited team, is also "done", the robots I ended up remodeling are:
- Roly Poly ==> Holy Moly (still a rammer)
- Ninja ==> Sam R. Rye (now a thwack-bot)
- Barbershop Chop ==> Close Shave (now a hammer bot)
- Revenge ==> Best Served Cold (double the weaponry)
- Bear ==> Uncare Bear (now a vertical spinner)
- Emergency ==> The 'Merge (still a flipper, just even more annoying)

I'll go through however many teams I decide on and then see if there are any existing robots that are in DIRE need of any tweaks and I'll remake them if it's not terribly difficult.

One thing I wanted to do in the first AI pack(s) was re-envision some of the stock AI into bigger meaner machines. I figured that going after the top dog, EMERGENCY, and making it even more of a frustrating opponent than it already is seemed like a good idea. He has no paint job yet, but here is "The 'Merge":

For the other 5 robots getting the makeover I was considering Bear as the other HW, Revenge and Barbershop Chop (that secret robot and the one from the RA.com website) for the MWs, and Ninja and someone else for the LWs.

Thus far everything I aim to produce is something possible in real life (theoretically you could cut slots through "real" ram plates etc etc etc let's not get technical here), although two robots specifically, The Merge and Thumperizer Anniversary both utilize that old school "stacked" motors trick to give them a little extra edge in being tougher accordingly.

edit: For the sake of hilarity, Wimpy 2K10 ;)

I'm going to put a little more effort into skinning most of these robots (the previous 180 were all skinned using the in-game editor). I've got most of one team completed - consisting of the 6 robots "Patriot Act", "Going Commando", "Executioner EX", "Menace 2 Society", "Gammarazer", and "Wimpy 2K10". If you can guess where all 6 are inspired from and based upon you get bonus points.

I've also put some work into the "10 Yr. (-1) Anniversary Edition Thumperizer". It's pretty effective thus far. I'm thinking about reskinning some of the components used to have gold-plated editions though. :P

My RA2 crashes every time I try saving a robot (which just caused me to lose 2 decent designs). I'm going to play with it and reinstall and see if that fixes it.

edit: Not sure what the issue was but a fresh re-install and patched with only the RFS AI Packs and the AI components patches works.

yeah, a Golden Thumperizer would be richous
maybe it would also come with a drivable version
could tower of destruction be in it?

I tried responding to your PMs but it keeps saying your box is full so it won't let me send it.

I remember back when subsequent versions of the pack were in the works there was a lot of clamoring to feature "third party" robots in the pack, and I realized that if I let one person in to be fair I'd have to let EVERYBODY in... and from there it loses the appeal of being a true installment of the series. I may consider a "community bots" team as part of the inclusion if there's support for it, but again that's only 6 bots (all original stock only) so it would still kinda be exclusive, which I don't really like. The only robots that made it into the pack are the 3 blue and green robots in the "Disturbed Ones" team because the person who made them, disturbed, was someone who helped me mod the game to allow the bigger teams.

It's 6 or 7 years late but who gives a damn, I've decided to make my last hurrah with Robot Arena 2, find that inner "Tutorial Man", and relearn AI-ing to revive the previously canceled version "1.7" of the RFS (Dracophile) AI Pack. There's not much left to expand upon, just more teams - and I don't know how many I'll add, I'll just keep making them until I get tired of it.

I know there's some AI programs out there that do AI-ing for you, but I'd rather code this by hand to keep with that authentic feel, for me at least.

Originally when robots for V1.7 were being designed, they were all parted out to various modders for "cameo" appearances, and there's also an "unseen AI" download pack full of 7 BOT files here: https://gametechmods.com/Robot_Arena2/AI_Packs/RFS/RFS_unseenAI.zip

Will I include them in the V1.7? I don't know. Maybe? Maybe not. Let me see if they suck or not.

SOME QUESTIONS PEOPLE MAY HAVE ABOUT THIS PACK:
Q: Why the sudden rekindled interest in Robot Arena 2 modding?
A: Because. BattleBots was canceled again and I'm mad and I feel like getting my fix again.

Q: Who is Dracophile?
A: Dracophile is the screenname I go by now because I hated RFS. This pack's title will have the Draco thing in parentheses.

Q: If I have downloaded/installed (super duper doo doo man parts pack 4000) will V1.7 work for me?
A: Probably not, I would use a fresh install just to be safe. No guarantees of cross-compatibility with other packs.

Q: Will I need to have patched the game with your previous AI packs to use V1.7?
A: No, this is an all-encompassing download pack that you can play right out of the box with all of the previous bots included.

Q: Will there be any secrets included in this pack?
A: I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT THERE ARE NEVER ANY SECRETS IN ANY OF MY PACKS EVER. SHUT UP.

Q: When will this be done?
A:bigsmile: <--- (That's :rapeface2000: from RFSHQ, actually, and originated from Club Penguin forums as :scary:, the equivalent of :D in the game.)

I will post teasers/promos as they become available.

You can consult the global RFS AI Pack page on the Wiki here for general information and the history of the upgrade:

You could make a "refinement" pack.

You know, Use Omni on some bots, change some bindings... that stuff.

After talking to Sparkey I really feel like I should pick up the previously canceled "V1.7" and release it as a big shebangbang that includes all previous versions (no patching required) as well as some more AI teams, and maybe a "Thumperizer 10 Year (-1) Anniversary Commemorative Edition" robot. Boy, the game is gonna have LOTS of fun with that name. :P

I don't really wanna refine or edit the existing robots (since doing so would ruin their paint job and other such things, as would moving stuff around) since I like their 2003 styles. They will either mesh terribly with my 2010 designs or be completely unnoticeable because my building habits haven't changed one bit.

yeah, I guess

BTW I downloaded RFS AI V1.0 and I loled at half the bots I love LAN mower and Ultra bong

I implore you to download and upgrade to V1.2 and then V1.5! It doesn't override any bots it just builds upon existing code to stretch the AI teams to have 6 instead of 3 bots and 30 teams instead of 15 (180 total bots). If you play tournament mode (who still does?) the game will only draw from the first 15 teams and the first 3 bots from those teams, though.

You can see all the bots here: https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php/topic,2040.msg94789.html#msg94789

To be honest I SHOULD compile everything into one download and release it as V1.6 that way nobody has to negotiate the tricky patching. (V1.0 and V1.5 must be extracted to different directories than V1.2 I believe.)

I played it for fun the other night. It's an easy pack, out of the 180 robots about 170 of them are ones you could build in real life (within reason), and that's what the aim of the pack was for. At the time the pack was made nobody really fiddled with AAM or DSL (it didn't exist) or any kind of complex stacking or "cheating" with the physics and Bot Lab. Back then the only "hax" we had was that trick where you put a motor on a burst motor, and then by adjusting the "start" position of the burst motor you could move what was attached to it through other parts. INTENSE!! That was like the Atari 2600. It rocked faces off back then, but people today look at it and go "wow grandpa, real cool *roll eyes*".

If you're savvy on Robot Wars, Robotica, and BattleBots competitors you can have fun trying to pinpoint which designs are "replicas". Just off the top of my head from the AI pack (and looking at that picture) here's the ones I can remember the names of:
- Thwacktar (2nd row, 2nd robot) was a replica of a robot made by ARC moderator FishofDoom
- Powerhouse Two (2nd row, far right) has a weapon modeled after Biohazard
- Monkey Wrench (5th row, 3rd robot) is meant to resemble Mauler
- The Munchies (9th row, 6th robot) is a replica of War Machine and...
- OMG WTF BANNED (10th row, 9th robot) is a better replica of War Machine with 14 wheels.
- Code Red (9th row, 8th robot) has a design similar to 13 Black but the chassis has a different forward heading.
- All Your Bot Are Belong To Us (12th row, 5th robot) is a replica of Son of a Monkey Wrench
- 1K (12th row 7th robot) is a replica of a robot of mine called The Void
- toXic (13th row, 11th robot) is designed, named, and painted after a robot a middle school friend of mine made.
- Bit Rot (bottom row, 5th robot) is based loosely off of Andy Sauro's robot Sledgejammer
- Keep Back 500 Feet (bottom row, 7th robot) is a completely accurate replica of my antweight robot of the same name.

I thought about making a little video featurette "Behind the Scenes" or "The Making Of" for the pack since apparently people STILL play with it. I wouldn't know what to talk about really, and I don't think people would like to hear me ramble about robots for 20 minutes.

I didnt even know you made a DSL one lol

guess it makes that more true...

my legacy remains with the original

I made it pack literally within the first week of DSL being released as an "incentive" for even more people to download the mod, since at the time I believe my pack was still the most downloaded of All Time (according to the dated splash screens of the RFS DSL AI Pack), so "if RFS is playing it and making mods then I better download it too!"

That kinda marketing.

you did. I remember that. Even though my first ever DSL bot (a HW shell spinner with Hypno teeth) beat it.

I never got the "hang" of DSL, I'm pretty sure everything in that pack could be beaten with an unarmored wedge if you tried hard enough. It was too "new" of a game and I was already accustomed to the old RA2 - my legacy remains with the original

Looks like sarcasm still doesn't translate well over the Internet. Plus the joke was one of those "you had to be there" kinds of things anyways.

yeah, posibly

lol you guys have givin me so many Ideas I might change my name

sucks that a jerk revolutionised RA2 (sorry about my spelling right now, I'm really tired ;D)

DA still wasn't the first vertical spinner, Ripblade was. :P

This became my signature robot:
https://gametechmods.com/RA2wiki/index.php?title=Tha_Thumperizer
I just updated the post with some old pics and extra information for the "IRL" section of the article. Just for fun I'm considering doing my robot justice and completing its final planned IRL design.

I made it in early 2003, it's a replica of a robot I originally built in Lego Mindstorms. It's named after a slang term for a subwoofer, a "thumperizer", because its Lego counterpart would play music while in operation, the two spinning blades later became known as "thumperizers". Tha Thumperizer became famous only because I coined the phrase "THUMPERIZED" and used it whenever I edited out or deleted posts when I was on AceUplink. Whenever I was a Moderator there for a short time I wouldn't DELETE people's posts, I'd just edit them out and put a thumbnail of Tha Thumperizer with "POST THUMPERIZED" underneath it.

There was this fellow on YouTube that I stumbled across one day called battlebots boy. He basically was running the RFS AI Pack V1.5 and set up Robot Wars-ish "heats" where robots from all of the weight classes fought and advanced up through his brackets. Out of all of the robots he used (some weren't from my AI pack) Tha Thumperizer won the "Grand Final". Made me smile, for such an old robot it can still beat... robots of the same era it's from. :P

on an off topic thought, TDSDA really should have his own page on the wiki, no matter how much of ans ASS TDS was

and just a thought, does anyone have his email?

The last email address I remember him having was dastompa@hotmail.com. It's likely long gone though.

edit: This is apparently him: http://www.airsoftforum.com/board/TDS-m15891.html
