I think this is off to a great start so far, lots of cool builds already and it's only the first day! Looking forward to tomorrow's!

Botober 2020 Logo.png

It's time to prepare for the third annual Botober event! As always, the challenge is simple: build a robot every day (or as many days as possible) for the whole of October, using the official Inktober prompts at the bottom of this post, and post them here for others to look at!

=== HOW IT WORKS ===

  • Every day during October, you must create a robot based on that day's prompt, and post a splash image or screenshot in this thread.
  • There are no prizes for completing all 31 days. The only prizes are personal satisfaction, and having a fleet of potential new tournament entries. This is a fun challenge, so please don't push yourself to the point of burnout in trying to complete it.
  • You are free to use any game and any meta you like (RA2, RR2, Roblox, GMod, etc.), and you are free to use different games/metas for different days.
  • It's fine to build a bot early, as long as you wait until the day of its prompt to post it. Similarly, it's fine to build a bot late if you need to catch up.
  • I will be taking part myself, but will be going on holiday in early October and will likely miss those days.

=== THE GOALS OF BOTOBER ===

  • Test your creativity and building skills. Try out different weapon systems, weight classes, and even new games or metas. Don't be afraid to go outside your comfort zone.
  • Build up your roster. If you complete all 31 days, you'll have 31 robots ready to be polished up and sent into tournaments.
  • Botober is a personal challenge - you're competing against the prompts and your own creative limits, not each other. Don't be discouraged if you feel other people's builds are better than your own - and remember, you can always revisit and refine your Botober creations after the challenge is over.

I am indeed able to update my old bots! Took me all night, but here's Fait Accompli:

There's probably still tweaks I can make - and there's tweaks I can make to Deathstalker as well - but that's a job for another day.

Done. I also slimmed down the supports a bit, as they're no longer hiding a giant Pancake E-Tek, and bulked it up to the weight limit just to future-proof it.

I also found a folder with (very old versions of) some of my RR2 robots, so hopefully I don't have to remake them from scratch or retrieve them from my old laptop (except for Chinese Burn because I like it too much)

Kix's big Robogames tournament prompted me to finally get back into this game. All my bots are on my old laptop, and I'll transfer them over at the weekend, but just to get back into the swing of things, I resurrected an old friend:

The hammer is anaemic, and it's 14.5kg underweight because I didn't know what to do with all that spare weight. Apparently spinners don't do damage in the current builds, so cranking the armour up felt like a waste (it's already got 10mm Hardox on the front wedge and 5mm Hardox everywhere else). Still, this was a good exercise just to re-learn the game, and get used to all the new features. Might try building some bots in lower weight classes.

Which version of the game will you be using?

Welcome to the site! You're off to a good start. In addition to the points made by others, I'd suggest moving the drive motors upwards so you can give your bot larger wheels. Speed and grip aren't all that important for an overhead spinner, but you still don't want your wheels getting sniped off in one hit. It looks like you have enough height and weight for DSL wheels, so try those. You should also try and make your wedge wider so it covers the entire front of your robot; it'll make it stronger and nicer-looking.

Should you also limit how many flamethrowers you can have? Maybe like 4-6 I think.

That'll only matter if eternalflame.py is allowed. Having more flamethrowers doesn't mean more damage, it just means you burn through your gas supply that much more quickly. I personally never have more than two.

...I'm assuming eternalflame.py will be banned, right?

This was gonna be my Anonymous Assault entry, but it turned out 100kg underweight, so rather than try and bulk it up I just lowered the top and bottom panels to Ti and boom, CW. I needed a new CW anyway so it works out pretty nicely.

My entry for 09's chassis swap tourney. I got one of the worst chassis designs, but I think I did a pretty good job with it:

Aquamarine.png

It's fast, tough, and 140kg of counterweights means it can actually lift and throw things (not every time, but it can). I suspect it won't do too well with the AI controlling it, but it's not like I'm the world's greatest driver anyway so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Next bot to get the 2.4 treatment is Octane:

Octane C-Spec.png

The weapon's now powered by dual E-Tek hubmotors instead of dual flats, so it's even more powerful than ever. I've made a few other quality-of-life changes, but the E-Teks are the big one. I also plan to make a version with only 6 large beaters, because a lot of HW tournaments seem to set that as the limit nowadays.

Finally got round to upgrading Tearaway for DM6. It turned out to be one of those "edge case" bots that was overweight with the crash patch installed, so to save weight, the rounded back now uses drums instead of angle extenders. The weapon is now also powered by dual TWMRs instead of flats.

I'm still salty about losing to Flip Prince (twice, if it's the robot I'm thinking of)

Threw together a LW extenderbot flatboi for Robot Rampage III. It jitters about all over the place and doesn't have enough battery to last the three minutes (couldn't fit a red battery in because it's only 10cm tall) but it's fun to try something different.

Update: Can't be bothered to redo the splash but I BFEd the motors inwards so the wheels don't clip the sides

The redesigns are looking cool! Especially liking Midnight Wish!
Thanks! Sadly, as a former PWS entrant, it's not eligible for New Blood, but this is:

Divine Graffiti.png

Copied the wedge design from Robo (because everything else I tried looked like crap), and took the name from a Talk to Transformer post on the Discord. I spent a good while on this and I'm pleased with how clean it came out looking.

I also made another minor update to Valkyri3, tidying up the wheelguards and making them transition more neatly into the front wedge.

Time to show off those upgrades I mentioned earlier.

First, LadyKiller. The reception to LadyKiller 2 was... kinda frosty, so I went back to the original design and gave it a new toothed wedge, Hypno wheels, and Ti 5 armour. It's now much better at getting opponents onto the wedge and keeping them there, plus the extra speed from the Hypno wheels means it can really slam things around now.

ladykiller_1.5.png

Next, Midnight Wish. The front wedge is now shallower so it lines up with the flipper, which also allowed me to add wedgelets without them looking silly. I do miss the T-shaped flipping arm, but I think the rest of the changes make it worth it.

midnightwish_1.5.png

Bluebird's only had a minor change, but it's an important one: I shuffled the wheel guards forward, and as a result, I was able to get the front wedges to line up with the chassis properly. I'm still pondering any further upgrades I can make ahead of Royal Rampage III.

bluebird2.1.png

And finally, a robot I bet none of you were expecting to see again:

Valkyri3 Rev.2.png

This is how far I had to dig to find a Shell Shock entrant before Killer clarified that it was okay to use the old NPCs  heck

Anyway, Valkyri3's had some major upgrades, including stronger armour, hinged wedgelets, significantly optimised extenderwork, and (as always) grippier wheels instead of Colsons. I'm not sure what to do with the remaining 20kg - it's not quite enough for Steel 5, and extra counterweights actually seem to make it less stable. Still, it's always good to see one of my veterans get brought up to speed again.

I've been on a bit of an upgrade spree over the past couple of days, but first I wanna show these off as I realised I never showcased them:

Vivid.png

Vivid Red and Vivid Blue have been rebuilt from scratch, while Vivid Yellow is just a bulked-up Nerve Agent VX. They're optimised for PWS, so unfortunately, they probably won't see use in any GTM tournaments. Still wanted to show them off here, though.

I personally like the white theme, but if you want black, go ahead.
Thank you based Gulden, this is so much easier on my poor migraine-prone head

Here's a rebuild that's long overdue:

LadyKiller 2.png

I've taken into account everything I've learned from PWS: a longer body to reduce front-flipping, longer wedgelets to help get under opponents, a taller wedge to help keep it under them, and a smaller gas supply to save weight. Hopefully this should combine the competitiveness of Paralyzer with the stylishness of the original LadyKiller.
