UPDATE: I followed the advices as best as I could. So here is what I did.

- I swapped the reinforced motor for a 24V one for a bit more power.

- I changed the plating covering my wheels from aluminum to titanium. Had to sacrifice the front plating to remain at middleweight but I ain't too worried. Outside from odd angles they would need to go dangerously close to my weapon.

- Changed batteries to battlepacks as you suggested.

- Had a bit of weight left so I gave it red eyes because why not?

Improvements look solid!

As a heads up/justification for the motor recommendation, components mounted directly to the chassis can't actually be broken off, so your weapon should be fine against hammers even with a non reinforced motor. At worst it'll start smoking and the spin speed will be reduced, but it shouldn't ever get fully out out of commission unless they manage to land hits on the blade itself.

Armour is mostly gonna be an issue if you fight a vertical spinner or something. They tend to be the natural enemy of horizontal spinners. You can try to keep your saw pointed towards them when you're driving, but when they've got a wedge it should be fairly trivial for them to scoop you up and hit your chassis. That'll be even more of an issue in AI fights which most tournaments are, as you can't rely on defensive driving.

Not a bad looking first bot at all.

In terms of potential improvements you could make, the reinforced version of the perm isn't really necessary here, as your chassis already supports the weapon (making this legal for the most common tournament ruleset, btw). Swapping to just a regular belted perm will save you a fair bit of weight you can spend elsewhere.

Also in post 2.1 versions of DSL, ant batts are the least efficient battery in terms of power to weight ratio. Rather than using a bunch of ant batts you may want to consider using a smaller quantity of larger batts (2 battlepacks is a pretty standard setup for a bit with 3 spin motors)

The axle of the weapon motor poking out a tiny bit isn't an issue at all by the way. It's clearly still adequately supported.

Solid start overall. Hope to see more from you!

Finally got around to skinning those panels. The stripes don't go fully to the end of the wedge due to the wedge edges which irks me slightly, but otherwise I think it looks good. Managed to get them to flow nicely into the extender and panel based stripes at the top/rear of the bot. Also took the opportunity to make the wedge a bit more seamless through better extender setups, and also swapped to a slow VDMA to try to avoid hammer purgatory

Hammer that definitely didn't start out as a vert. Been wanting to do something with the colour scheme of the Essex Lotus F1 livery for a while and this is it. Will likely do a bit of panel skinning to get some more of the silver and red on there.

Here's a pic of the livery I based it on for context

mad props for making that wack chassis shape work out. If the overall stance was dropped down so that the entire bot was flush with the bottom panel it would look a lot better imo.

You're probably right, but there's no way to drop the height while retaining the geometry of the sides with the kinda pyramidal-ish shape to them, which was sorta the whole motivation behind the bot, unfortunately.

In other news, I built another one. Bit more conventional but probably better as a result. Built like an absolute tank with all steel everywhere on the front and 4WD TWMR2s so nice and nippy. Should hopefully be an HS's worst nightmare.

Weird drum thing for MMNB. Wasn't exactly overflowing with ideas but wanted to get something built. I had a vague shape in my mind which this somewhat matches, though I'd have liked for the bot to be a bit less tall overall. I'd originally planned to have it fully symmetrical and invertible, but that didn't work out so I added a beefy front wedge in a similar vein to old bots like Steel Raptor and managed to cram in a srimech. I'm not 100% on it overall but I think I at least managed to execute the concept decently.

Update to Sigil to give it 4WD. Weight to do so gained by swapping the main drive motors from TWMR2s to NPC fasts, swapping a few bits from Steel to Ti (main wedge is still all steel) and swapping the weapon motor from 72V to 48V. Still have the old ones but this will likely be the version seen in comps.

Hola amigos! I’m relatively new to Robot Arena 2 but I thought I’d make a profile on here and post my my new robot, Ominous Starfish

It’s 599 in weight and the finished version is covered up underneath with aluminum sheets! Hope to compete with this sometime, any advice on improvements are welcome, gracias!

Welcome!

Nice first effort, especially considering it's an extenderbot. Don't often see those for a first posted bot.

2WD slimbodies is probably right on the edge of what is passable for drive on a cruiserweight, even with super grippy wheels like motorcycles, but i suppose given it's a HS it doesn't need too much drive, so it's probably fine.

Assuming the alu sheets you're referring to for covering the bottom are the halfsheets, I'd try to use alu panels instead to match what you've got on the top. It'll look better and probably give the internals a modicum more protection as the halfsheets are so thin that stuff can hit straight through them (panels have that issue too to some degree, but less-so)

Overall though a very solid start. Looks well thought out, and like some solid effort has gone into making it look nice, which is always good to see. Look forward to seeing more from you!

Vert thing. There's more I wanted to do with the concept tbh, but I had a surprising amount of weight issues given it's only a 2WD vert. It does have a 72v 4 mag and all-steel front end though so it'll be relatively tanky I hope

Edit:
Based on feedback from Discord I've also done another version with a shortened tail. Also has the added benefit of improving self righting. Cleaned up the supports on this one too which I may well transfer over to the original because I think they look much nicer. Still like the original and will be keeping hold of it, but this will likely be the version you see in tournaments because it can actually self right somewhat reliably.

Not really a 'proper' showcase but I wanted to **** around with the new hworf AP so I updated this old thing by giving it a 72V motor, a nicer wedge and a few bits of cleaning up. It's got some rough edges because it's an old bot but this was mostly just to play around with and see how the hworfs fare

Also damn. TIL it's over 2 years since the last update to this bot. Time flies eh.

Flipper thing. Vague Rapid vibes, also vague Spawn Again vibes. Also has that sweet adidas tracksuit flipper

2 TWMR2s, 2 TWMRs, 2 medium VDMAs. Front is all steel, rest is Alu

Love chavbot, adidas really pulled through
Gonna roll up to tournaments in a riced out Vauxhall Nova

Discussion / Re: How to Ground Game?

If you're playing stock or not going for realism then follow Madman's advice.

The realistic building style that's most popular today is still pretty wedge-focused just like the real battlebots. There's two different philosophies that are popular really.

One is wedgelets like you see on a bunch of real battlebots. You can make them out of extenders and the dedicated wedgelet components included in DSL 2.5 along with the spring loaded metal hinge component. (having your wedge on a hinge is pretty crucial in RA2 for actually getting under stuff)

Another is the so-called "panel wedge", which is a wedge that uses a panel component along with a wedge edge component, again attached to a hinge (often a skirt hinge instead of the spring loaded metal hinge)

We don't allow the kind of wedges that madman refers to in his comment in the realistic building style that's most popular these days because they rely on paper thin sheets of metal that would bend really quickly on real robots

Advantages of wedgelets are that their small size allows them to exploit small gaps in the ground clearance of the opponent, while panel wedges tend to have outright better wedging ability.

There's never really gonna be a wedge that gets under literally everything else 100% of the time, but these approaches work well in the realistic meta aimed at emulating real robot combat as best as possible.

I'd recommend joining the RA2 central discord (linked at the top of the homepage) if you have more questions because it's a lot more active than here.

Updated up to current standards. Added reference to DSL 2.5 and a section on overvolted motors, their uses and disadvantages, and how to identify them for new players.

Not built a vert in a while so here's one. 4WD (2 TWMR2s, 2 TWMRs) 72V Etek, Heavily armoured too and can self right with the weapon (also somewhat invertible)

Relatively basic hammer. Might show up in PWT at some point because it's got 4WD (2 TWMR2s, 2 TWMRs) and should have a decent wedge hopefully. Front will hopefully be very tanky since it's 2 60x100 steel panels. 1 large slow VDMA for the hammer, which is only 30kg so won't be hugely damaging. May swap it to an axe head for more damage output

WWRA2 entry. Far from groundbreaking but I wanted to do something I knew would be relatively effective considering it's a team tournament, and everyone on my team seemed to be clamouring for me to do one of the flippers. Had planned to do a clamp but between that and the new format that I'm fairly sure will mean that the less competitive bot types will fall out of the tournament pretty quickly I decided to go back to my roots and do the front hinge.

Mostly my basic front hinge fundamentals. 2WD TWMR2s (I originally dabbled with 4WD but I just couldn't get a setup that looked good for this particular design) and 2 VDMA front hinges. This thing should be pretty tanky because it's got steel basically everywhere, and the wedge and KO ability seem really strong from testing. I'm sure the lack of drive will lose it a few fights but hopefully nothing too bad.

New lad. Had this idea bouncing around in my head for a bit now. Wanted to do a kinda bucket scoop style flipper, but try to make it a wee bit less of a brick sh**house than they usually are. 2 of the new right angle TWMR2 drives, which are equivalent to NPC fasts now. Not crazy speedy by any means but standard drive for a bot by me. 2 medium VDMA R/Ps which is fairly standard for a rear hinge too, though it has a fair bit of weight on the bursts so I doubt it'll be crazy powerful.

All in all I think it came out pretty well, though are some small rough edges in places.

I also did some fairly major updates to Cicada since my last post in here, but didn't think they warranted a post of their own. New disc setup with 3 of the new small curved teeth, a 72v etek now for the weapon motor, and a bunch of cleanup and optimisation to get this all in weight and looking good

I blame discord for that.

Truth be told, it's a good robot.
Though, I can't shake this nagging voice in the back of my head wanting to say "haha, Roboteer made another black and blue flipper."

I do get feedback for my stuff on discord so it's not like I'm getting nothing when I post a bot. I'll continue posting my stuff to the forum as long as it exists because it's nice to have an archive where you can see how someone has progressed as a builder over time, but as long as I'm getting feedback in some form or another I don't mind too badly if it's on discord or the forum.

Thanks though both of you. I'm pretty happy with the panelwork on this one. You can blame the fact it's a sequel to an old bot for it being yet another black and blue flipper  ;)
