Tournament Archives / Redemption - Signups
« on: September 03, 2018, 10:52:57 AM »
I want to start getting back into RA2 tournaments but, before I try to do anything big again, I want to prove to you and myself that I can finish a tournament on GTM, considering my recent track record. If this tournament goes well, I hope you can take my future tournament ideas seriously.

Building Rules:
Stock 1.4
HW
No BFE, AAM, Hax Mode and all that crazy stuff, this includes RA2CF in its entirety (no Ro7 break)
No cheatbot2
You are not allowed to update your bot once it's accepted, although you can attempt to enter as many times as you need

Tournament and Match Rules:
16 entries max (once I hit 8 entries, signups could end at any time)
Double elimination bracket
The Ring Arena
Best of 3 fights (1 Match = 3 Fights)
3 minute fights
There will be 1 havok restart per bot per fight. Havoking twice in 1 fight will result in a fight loss

Notes:
I will AI if you do not wish to or cannot do it yourself, just remember that if you want something done the way you envision it, do it yourself
If you have anything on your bot that does not come with Stock or AI essentials (skinned parts, custom AI lines or smartzones), inform me and send me a link to what I need for your bot
I reserve my right to deny your entry for any reason, although I will always be reasonable
There won't be any specific deadline but I would like the entire tournament to be done by the end of the month, so I don't want singups to take that long. I should be away from the 21st to the 23rd. So, if I'm ever stuck on an odd number of entrants, I might still proceed to SBV and deal with byes, so don't ever assume it's safe to sleep on this tourney. Basically, I'm just begging people to not be lazy and make my comeback worthwhile
All entries will be checked on a first-come first-served basis, although I can't promise I'll check your entry as soon as you send it, so make sure it's legal

I really do want to get back into the tournament scene, just as long as stock isn't too dead. I am willing to spice up my tournaments in terms of rules and gimmicks, in the future, because I am well aware that stock can be stale at the best of times. For now, though, I want to make sure I'm au fait with tournament hosting again.

Entries:
1. Philippa
2. RedAce
3. Badger
4. Hoppin
5. 8bean
6. Dreamcast
7. Billy5545
8. Plerco
9. geese
10. NeonCalypso
11. Guldenflame

Received = Black
Accepted = Blue

Joelu, ShadowDrake and I did some randomised doubles matches on Citra. Considering I hit so many roadblocks along the way, when I first got Wi-Fi battles working on Citra, I was so ****ing elated. Really happy that I got this working and I can do battles like this. If you've got a decent PC, feel free to ask to join in. With 1 more person, we can do Free-For-Alls, if you're familiar with the concept.

Discussion / Re: The problem with competitive IRL in RA2
« on: July 03, 2018, 08:38:19 PM »
Also anyone who says IRL is easier or takes less time than stock or standard has never built a decent looking IRL bot in today's standards.
Making the best and most efficient stock bot you can possibly make is much more excruciating than IRL building, due to the amount of practice and learning you have to do. That isn't to say that IRL building doesn't take ages or require skill, stock is just much more difficult and complex to build in, if you're aiming to build the best bot you possibly can that will win tournaments. IRL building is relaxed with rules to allow people to build the best looking thing they can as easily as possible. This makes building IRL bots much more fun, even if it may end up taking just as long as it would to build an amazing stock bot.
Except nobody builds stock legit anymore, and even then we already know what bot types are the best. All the hard work for stock was done years ago
I'm just saying that is the case if you do build stock 'legit', which most tournament hosts will enforce/encourage. And I can't argue that all the hard work for stock hasn't already been done but it doesn't change the fact that any given newcomer would probably take much longer getting the hang of stock, without giving up on it.

On a related note, I actually love stock, despite hosting and being interested in mostly IRL stuff before. I like DLS-S less because it just seems like a watered-down version of stock, as a spectator. Both strive for maximum efficiency and the like, just DSL-S does it without as many glitches. I will admit that DSL-S is way more accessible because of that and I definitely don't think it's a bad metagame. I'm really enjoying seeing stock tournament fights nowadays, watching the best designed and best built bots succeeding. Stock has actually refreshed some interest I've had in the game because I, as was well-put by Badger, used to view RA2 mostly as the best platform for making the best looking robots and actually have them fight each other, something CAD nor any robot combat game could do better. I hope more people get (back) into stock, as it's one of the greatest competitive formats in a game that I've seen. My new view on stock is probably due to playing Garry's Mod for so long since I first got into RA2. It made me appreciate the limits RA2 has as a game. If you're gonna start breaking the rule of 7 and stuff, you may as well shift platform to something like GMod that can achieve much better visuals and much better fights, with the same amount of restrictions on competitive play.

I really don't appreciate the attitudes in this thread acting like he's already here pissing in your frosted flakes.
He was banned to stop pissing in our frosted flakes. The argument that one shouldn't not want him back because he hasn't done anything sh** on the forum yet makes no sense because he's banned.

I don't deserve to be treated like a piece of sh**.
No-one is treating you that way. Where did this even come from?

i think this thread has done a good job of showing who's opinions should be considered and who's shouldnt in decisions for gtm's future

NOOOO avalanche lost the vote

Does this mean I can have his spot in tournaments?

nah mate ava's most likely returning. and even then he isn't going anywhere

Then what was the point of the vote.
Both this vote and the vote on the like feature are redundant. What's the point in getting the feel for community opinions when you don't make decisions based on them? It feels like this 'generation' of moderators make changes because they can and Trov didn't. I admit I can't really say much when I attempted to change some tournament rules/organisation when I was a mod and I'm not even an active member of the community. Nevertheless, I still like to state my opinion.

stop posting useless threads.
I agree. You should make a thread about this issue.

Age has nothing to do with it.
I disagree entirely. People mature with age. Some take longer than others, mind you.
I agree that people mature with age but Avalanche should have already reached the point in which his age catches up with his behaviour. That's what I meant by age having nothing to do with it, at this point.

I’d say likes are more of a replacement to a whole post just having a quote and having the person saying “What he said” TBH

Age has nothing to do with it. As Somebody said, Ava only caused a fuss on FB a week ago, although I'm just taking his word on that. The way you put it makes it seem like change is an inevitability as he gets older but it actually comes from meaningful reflection and being honest with yourself and others, which Ava clearly hasn't done, opting for the 'forced smile' approach, instead.

while I believe he could/should have a final chance
I don't know how else to impress on you (and other newboys) that he has had loads of 'final' chances. Not just in this community, either. I don't think there's a single robot combat community out there that he hasn't been banned from at least once, dare I say twice.

I say let's give him one last shot!
I wonder how many last chances he's been given. The phrase probably means nothing to him anymore.

I mean like a week ago he was picking fights on facebook with people the same way he always has. He is who he is. If ya want him around, your choice, but I don't think you gain much.
This is the perfect argument as to why he shouldn't come back, I couldn't agree with it more. He's not gonna change, he is who he is. Everyone that thinks he's improved clearly can't see someone faking their attitude/behaviour. What he says feels so unnatural. For example (from the ARC Dicksword):

Avalanche's aggressive white knight response is not something a normal person would say, nor is it something Avalanche would typically say. He's just trying too hard to look like he's changed and I'm surprised he hasn't annoyed more people with this forced behaviour. Inb4 that was 4 months ago, 'cos that's a great argument.

Not to mention the 'perma' bit of his ban(s). Permas should just be called indefibans.

can i submit bots?
Sorry for seeming harsh here, but why did you think you would be allowed to?
You do realise who you're talking to, right?

75
also i'm pretty sure stacking is based on how powerful your pc is/fps. i couldn't stack worth a sh** on my old ass pc from the 90's, but i can stack components out the top of the chassis on my current rig.
RA2 is pay-to-win, confirmed.

The name of this tournament would be better suited to a 'spinners vs the world' gimmick, rather than a gimmick with no spinners. It would seem weird to have a bot type in the name and that's the one bot type that isn't allowed.

A bit of both. I protected with Hydreigon and switched Hitmontop out because I had no other way of dealing with a Dazzling Gleam from Koko, which I thought he was gonna go for. Switching in Raichu also covered the potential Z-move into Hitmontop and gave me the Fake Out on Koko for next turn. I did get a bit lucky with the prediction on the first turn that he was gonna protect Koko, fearing the Fake Out.

First time on Showdown in ages and I get these amazingly satisfying two turns. They don't call me poketom for nothing.
