Modifications / Re: Robot Wars RA2 - OFFICIAL MOD
« on: July 09, 2015, 05:00:37 PM »
Tough as Nails and Mantis both look awesome, as do the arenas, Roundhouse arena especially.

I may as well say now that I was the one who drew Orchid Mantis, and at the time I didn't know if there was or wasn't another robot called Mantis, so I had Orchid Mantis as my backup name. I'm still happy with Orchid Mantis as a name though :)
Also, now everyone knows I'm a far better artist in RA2 than in real life :P

Off-Topic Discussion / Re: Skull Kid's Robot Wars

Knight brought up negative points, not what could be improved.
The negative points he brought up are what could be improved:

I'm still not sure how to respond to this. Where do I start?

  • The camerawork is lazy Try to improve your camerawork, maybe set up different angles the way the Lego robot wars guy did it?
  • The editing is near non-existent. It looks like you just plonked raw footage onto a timeline and then added some music Maybe you could try searching for some tutorials online, I'm sure there are plenty for whatever editing software you choose to use
  • The sound design is incredibly lazy. No attempt to hide any distracting sounds that your camera picked up You could try not recording everything at once, and record the commentary and video separately. Then you can mute the video sound, and use sound effects instead. I'm pretty sure on the original Robot Wars JP wasn't watching the fight live as he did his commentary, although maybe someone who knows for sure could correct me there.
  • You stumble over your words a lot Maybe you could have a script before you start so you know exactly what you want to say
  • You repeat some things a lot Again, try using a script
  • You really couldn't find any suitable sound effects? Search free sound effect websites (maybe freesound.org off the top of my head, or even the sound effects from DSL might work)
  • Your commentary is dull and not captivating in the slightest Again, a script might be useful. Maybe have someone read it over and give feedback before you record it too.
  • There's no attempt to actually animate anything. Instead, you just manhandle your toys on camera and hope the audience is immersed anyway Stop motion can be done very well. Yes, it takes time, but if you genuinely care about the quality of what you're producing then you should be prepared to invest some time in it. If it does take longer to make a video, just put out videos less frequently and work for longer on each video
  • There's no attempt to disguise the fact that this is taking place in someone's bedroom/living room/basement/torture dungeon, but the audience is apparently meant to ignore this Try and set up some backdrops to enclose the area you're filming in.

Rather than look at what Knight said and dismiss it because of the way he worded it, look at what he said and think about what the issue is, and how you could fix it.
Obviously I can't make you change anything if you don't want to, but you could try some of these ideas out and see if they work for you.

I think I might have said it before, but just replace the grey with a metal texture of about the same shade, and put the text and decals over that, and that should help the skin look less empty.
Very easy to do in paint.net, but shouldn't be that much harder in normal paint either.
Robot itself still looks very cool though.

First robot would probably be better if you made it wider and less long at the same time, just looks too thin IMO
As far as the skin goes it's a little low resolution, and the texture seems to abruptly change in the middle of the top panel, suddenly becoming much darker. To improve this you could re-size the skin to 1024x1024, and try and choose a texture for the skin that's a little larger than the largest face of the skin to use.

Second bot also seems rather thin. Assuming you're still going for IRL here I'd definitely think about widening the wheelbase at least.

Last robot has a pretty cool hammer design, although maybe you could find a way of making the handle longer and slightly wider? Also you could try attaching the handle to a disk, and then attaching the drums to the disk, so that don't have that split in the middle of the hammer.
I'm thinking maybe that drive might be a little overkill on a MW, although I'm not sure here.

Puppet: You're certainly a master of them. Looks cool. What exactly does the back look like? I see some sort of wedge.
Giant Warrior: Sweet. The skin, while used in a similar fashion on what I believe your Halloween bot, is certainly eyecandy. What did you use to connect the spinner.
At the back of Puppet are two DSL3 angled panels, to help keep it stable when firing the weapon. I'm pretty sure it could do without, but they look pretty cool so I'm keeping them.
The spinner on Giant Warrior is connected by a long extension of the chassis. I tried quite a few methods of connecting it, and this one gave me the best looking and performing result. It also made it much easier to house the drive motors.
This skin is themed around the Feed Me character, since Feed Me has an album named A Giant Warrior Descends on Tokyo. But yes, it is pretty similar to that bot skin-wise.
Interestingly the game won't let me fire the flipper unless the spinner is up to speed.
That's quite cool. Goes with the kinetic flipper thing that Warrior Clan actually has going on :)
Indeed, which was why I was so surprised that it happened in the game.

Thanks guys :)

Two new bots. One took a lot longer than the other, it should be obvious which.

Firstly, Puppet:

Skinned after the puppet from fnaf. I've never played the games but the puppet had a pretty cool look to it, I thought.
Burst is BFEd to have a bigger arc.

Secondly, the one that took all the time, Giant Warrior:

My go at a Warrior Clan style bot. More difficult that I thought it would be, but now that it's done it's quite fun to use. Flipper uses a cheaty burst, but I didn't think it was worth putting in custom showcase for that alone.
Interestingly the game won't let me fire the flipper unless the spinner is up to speed.

General Support / Re: Downloaded version of RA2 asks for disc
« on: June 27, 2015, 10:06:40 AM »
I had this problem the other day. I stuck the disk for Morrowind in the drive and the message stopped, so I assumed it just checks for a disk in the drive and doesn't care which one. Maybe try stick any disk in the drive and see if it fixes it?

Try editing the game detail to fix the skin glitch. Might need a reload.
I went through the same process you use to get the Trov glitch to work, and it seems fine now. Thanks

I've not built in DSL3 for a while, so I'm pretty rusty. Here's a sort of warm-up bot for me: Scarlet Tiger

Named and skinned after the Scarlet Tiger Moth.
Pictures taken in the botlab, because it got hit by that horrible skin warping glitch.

I don't really get what you mean by calling it tryhard, like, is that really a bad thing?
By tryhard we generally mean that you're trying so hard to make the robot effective that you make it less IRL, in either appearance, functionality, or both. In IRL building this is a bad thing, because obviously by exploiting the game's damage engine in certain ways you're making your bot look and act less like a real robot.
In this case the hammer weapon like that is not something you'd see on a real robot IMO.

Cool robots dude :)
So I'm assuming Hardwired was your first robot? Would you say featherweight was a good weightclass to start building at? I'm looking to get into the sport as soon as I can, and the featherweight fights I've seen always look like fun.

Looks really, really good.
I especially like the addition of the spike strips + matilda plates, the colour scheme, and the way you've done the weapon slot too.
I'm still planning to write a skin tutorial for paint.net, but I'm in exam season right now, so I'll get doing that in a couple of weeks.

What looks worse to you in particular? To me it looks cleaner and overall nicer. If it's the wheels sticking out that's the issue, then you can either give it a skin with nice wheel slots or re-shuffle the drive around to see if you can get the wheels to fit inside.

Haha I like it :P
Also it's cool to see you taking the effort to give it a skin.

For the previous bot I'd take one of the bars away, and use that weight to upgrade the drive and weaponry on the remaining blade. Also, it looks like the blades intersect the weapon motors, so try and figure out a way of fixing that.

Both are pretty cool. Some wheel slots on Sharknado's skin might look nice, but it's nicely done as it is.

This looks like it should be really fun to watch.
Not sure who will come out on top, but I'm thinking Re-Stockasarus' matches should be especially fun.

I signed up, I didn't get an email like some other people have.
If you signed up after you saw people had got an email you probably won't get one. I haven't either, because I signed up after it was sent, as did Natef earlier.
:(

huh i never got it weird

be sure to post these in case others don't get the updates
If you use gmail, it's in the promotions tab.

it works
Nope, it isn't there. I haven't got it at all.

Yeah, I think that looks better
Try flipping the wedges over so that they're parallel with the slope of the chassis, that should look even nicer.
Have you put a skin on it? You can do a pretty good skin with the botlab paint section, but if you're feeling more confident you can try and make a custom one outside of RA2.
