Custom Components Showcase / Re: Lemonism's Custom Showcase

Thanks everyone
Unfortunately it's quite difficult to play with this bot at the moment due to weak armour, but I'm sure that will be fixed by the upcoming armour patch.
Armors are currently set to be 7.2 times stronger than the current selection of armors (and 3.6 times stronger than DSA).
Sounds good, thanks for the info.

Name = Red Rat
Personally, I probably would've named it Rat Trap because RW:ED reference.
Ah you're right, that would have been better... I'll just have to make another one and name it that.

I developed an allergy to garry's mod avatars
what?
Yes, even the thought of them makes me feel ill.
Just a joke about my absence from gtm, which seemed (to me) to have coincided with a small influx of gmod avatars. The real reason I've been away is a bit dull

So here's a robot. Name = Red Rat
Tried some ideas out with the camo pattern on this one. I'm not able to use my desktop for a bit, so I had to reinstall all my lovely paint.net plugins, and also contend with the fact that my laptop processes 2048x2048 images far slower than the more powerful desktop.

Unfortunately it's quite difficult to play with this bot at the moment due to weak armour, but I'm sure that will be fixed by the upcoming armour patch.
Otherwise, Robot Wars mod is pretty great so far. Couple of suggestions would be:
-Robots with invisible flippers probably shouldn't be able to use the invisible flippers once the visible one has been torn off. I think maybe using the 'Weapons' part of the bindings could get them to change tactic once the visible flipper is lost?
-Meggamouse ears to put on our robots! (unless I missed those while making this bot :S)
Not that anyone cared, but the reason I was away for a little while was that I developed an allergy to garry's mod avatars. It's alright now though, I've got some medicine for it.

Re-did the plows, so that they now protect more of the front chassis. Had to remove two casters as a result, but from testing it briefly it seems to be worth it to have the plows re-positioned.

Insides are identical to before, and weight is 791.5 still
Only thing I'm really unhappy with at the moment is that a plow extender slightly shows through the lower plows, although this doesn't seem to have mattered when I tested the design either.

I was envisaging all the razors running upwards, and the popup firing upwards, but I'm now not sure if that's what you've got going on right now?
Currently I have all of the razors running up, and the popup firing from back to front. This seems to work fairly well, but as I said I'll try out some different setups

Thanks guys :)
@Sage, I'll try and move the plows so that they protect the chassis a little more
@GK, I had all the razors rotating upwards so that the opponent was drawn up into the popup razors, and that seems to work OK, however you may be right. I'll try having the razors running in different directions with the spikes popping upwards, and see if that improves its damage capabilities

You can recolour the arena and still keep the metal texture, using overlays and by changing the hue in paint.net
If I were doing it I think I'd have the team logo in the center, with the RA2 league logo placed like so:
(Font is wrong because, whilst the crest copied nicely, I was lazy with copying the text)
With blue and orange being replaced with metal textures coloured to work with the team's logo (say a logo is mainly red with a little green, have backdrop green with border red)

The home skin idea is really nice, and it's something I'd like to do. My major concern is that skins are not my strong point, and hence my questions.

1) How would the home skin idea differ between teams? Maybe the skin should have the bots on it? Or something else?

2) would people be prepared to help me with the skinning if it was anything more complex than that?
I was thinking more along the lines of each team having a logo, like a football team's emblem, and having that as the center point of the arena, with the rest skinned based on the team's chosen colours.
Of course this means colours and logos would have to be organised by the teams that want to take part.
If we could provide a basic template skin people would probably be able to do their own home arena skin, or at least do their teams crest and specify their team colours if they can't do the whole arena themselves.
I might be able to help out doing some of them, but I don't know how busy I'll be in the coming weeks so I won't promise anything until I know how much free time I'm gonna have. I can certainly try and make a template skin though, if you'd be willing to send either the existing skin or the whole arena over.

Is arena skinning like robot skinning, or is there more to it?
Pretty sure it is, only difference being you don't do any of it in game, and there are separate files for hazards etc

Well, it's been a while since I built stock, but I wanted to try and enter RA2 League.
Went back to the gutripper thing above, and redesigned it to be a popup hybrid.

Insides (with snapper rotated so you can get a clearer view):

Weight = 791.5, armour is DSA
At the moment the popup spikes fire upwards, but I think I'll re-do them to fire forwards.
Thoughts?

Along the lines of football stadiums, it would be really cool if robots had 'home arenas' if they were notable enough to earn them. I'm not necessarily suggesting it for this tournament, as I'm sure it would take a good deal of work, but it would be fun.
Anyway, arena looks pretty good, and I like having the starting points to prevent box rushes. Only one suggestion, maybe add a border of a different texture around the edge of the arena? Maybe some scratched up grey or diamond plate metal, or hazard stripes of some sort might work.

Discussion / Re: Why are attachment points labeled by gender?
« on: September 05, 2015, 05:23:45 AM »
I think it's because that's how connectors are labeled in engineering in real life.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_of_connectors_and_fasteners
Although this doesn't seem to serve any purpose for RA2 since there's no actual physical difference between a male and female attachment point iirc, I'm not sure why they chose to make the game work that way.

Yeah the right one looks much smoother, and overall nicer
So cool to see anti aliasing working so well, I find my HD skins look a bit rough when I play with them sometimes.

Woah, these are very cool. Good work here dude
Love how well the armour plates all fit together, it shows that you put real effort and consideration into these.
Give these some nice skins (the ones with visible chassis anyway) and they'll be perfect in my book.

Oh oops, I shouldn't have assumed you were going for IRL. Sorry. I'm not a standard expert by any means, but I'll try and fix my advice:
For a standard bot I think this is underweaponed, and really doesn't need the three hammers + whole assembly at the back taking weight that could be used for frontal offensive weapons.
Chassis seems fairly tight as it is, but I'm thinking a U shaped chassis would save weight, allowing you to tighten it around the components more.
For the hammer I think you'd be better off using a row of blades, or axes or something rather than the hammer with the additional spikes, since at the moment the hammer will get in the way of the spikes or visa versa.

I'm gonna have to agree with Avalanche here; the side and back extenders are pretty messy looking to me, and that single extender holding all that back stuff does not look like it would work IRL at all. Honestly I'm not sure why you went for such an unusual chassis shape if you were just going to add that back section that far out - I would either remove that back stuff completely (save for the two wedge bits protecting the tracks), or switch to a chassis with a more square back end so you don't need that single extender looking so flimsy, everything coming from baseplate anchors.
I'd personally also remove the stuff from the top of the hammer to make that look a little cleaner, but I understand if you want that there for a little extra damage.

Ignoring the back stuff and those side extenders, however, it looks like a pretty good build to me.

Woah, it's been a long time since I built anything in ironforge. Here are two quick bots to get me back into it.

Firstly, Fire Frog:

That spike at the front is on a burst piston, by the way.

And secondly, Overset

Along with Giant Warrior in my DSL showcase, my second robot inspired by the new BattleBots series.
Spiral on the skin comes from the other meaning of overset, to throw into confusion, if you were wondering.

I would love to help out, but I honestly don't feel that confident in my skinning abilities. I will see what I can do.

I'm sure the rest of the community would be happy to muck in on some skinning if your bots were right for what they were rebuilds of :)
I was going to say, I'm not confident with my standard building but I'd be happy to give the skins a go

Skinning is something I really struggle with, have you got any pointers?
I was in the process of writing a tutorial before I went on holiday for a bit, so I'll try and scrape that together into something readable and PM it to you, if that works for you.
-My choice of photo is not the best - that is the bot after it has fired. If the pistons were pointed the other way they would be lifting the chassis up and it would have to start low down. I hope I've explained that alright.
Ah yeah I see, didn't think of that.

False Blackjack is pretty cool, I like the front grill design a lot, as well as the use of the lightning spikes. Skin is maybe a little dull, but otherwise I like it.

Steel Shark is kinda ridiculous, in a good way. I think the maces on the wheels are unnecessary, but that's really all I don't like about it.

On the flying guillotine bot, would making the pistons point downwards, rather than use the extenders coming from the top and down, make any difference to its ability to lift itself?

I am both very happy and entirely unsurprised you chose the Portsmouth Sinfonia version.
Oh, and always cool to see people who's names I've only ever seen when lurking old threads come back.

Pretty interesting, I like it. In particular I like the chassis shape and spikes + wheels at the back.
I'm not a fan of the iron spikes on the sides though, they look a little too long for me, maybe lightning spikes would work as a replacement? (a little lower down on the sides too, since the lightning spikes are wider)
The wheels at the front are interesting too, I can't decide whether I like those or not. I think I would switch the back wheels to hypnos too for consistency, but on the other hand the wider back wheels look cool already... I can't decide :S
Finally, is it possible to add an extender between the two sets of blades at the front, as an IRL support?
Overall, I think it's a pretty cool build
