Seriously guys, we all know that Trov's inactivity is an issue for the site, as the is the sole person with full access to the site, and this single point of failure is and has been failing for a while now. I think we need to group together to call for trov to promote a member here to Admin, as even if he feels like his current contributions are sufficient, I think even he can see that he is likely to go full-AWOL at some point in the future, if he hasn't already.
While there are several candidates for promotion (and this has already been extensively discussed in other threads), I think the obvious choice is Craig, who has a slightly unnerving amount of uptime on the site and has shown dedication and maturity through thick and thin. Other options would include Kill and Naryar, being the only other semi-active mods, but their activity would probably lead to similar complaints to what we have now.
Of course, this would leave a vacancy in the moderator position. While this may not need to be filled, I think another addition to the mod team really cannot hurt. Again, there has been extensive discussion on this topic, and I will not elaborate on this point seeing as everything has been said better and in more deal in other threads.
Trov, if you're reading this, as I hope you do, please do not take this as an insult to your work for the site. We're not saying that we want you gone, we're saying that we want you to have some assistance, as the needs of the site are greater than the amount of time you can dedicate to the site.
Hopefully the community can rally behind this message, and we can show Trov that we all think that we need a little change.

Considering that DSL has devolved into an aidspit of IRL, I thought it'd be nice to host one last DSL-S tournament in DSL.
RULES: HW (400.0 > 800.0) Standard DSL-S ruleset (i'll flesh it out to be more explicit if I actually get any interest) ALL replica components in the weapons tab are banned. BBEANS Arena v2, DSL tournament arena, Combat Zone or Vaporzone (Will put it to a vote) 3 min fights Double-elimination BO1 format with BO5 finals Meltybrain is banned, but SnS are not. Bots must show controlled movement Unlimited entries, max 2 per person. Signups will be open for a while, at least a month. RO7 break allowed DSC's IRL extenders allowed
Rules (up for debate): Ban 1WD bots? Ban SnS? Ban Gothic hammer? Any other components? Allow replica weapons under a certain DP?
So what do you guys think

Unfortunately this 'fix' is for nvidia cards only. Maybe someone on the red team can post below if Catalyst has a similar feature. iGPU users are SOL. If you don't understand anything in this guide, Google is your friend. Why would I want to limit my framerate?Good question. There are a couple reasons. Be default, this is my how my PC runs RA2 at the title screen: It can go up to 5,000 FPS at times, which is not only totally unnecessary, it produced an unholy amount of coil whine, which I never usually get on my gtx 970. It also puts unnecessary strain on your GPU. My 970 really doesn't need to be running at 87% capacity like it is in the above screenshot. After capping the framerate, my GPU is only running at 11% usage, which is much better. In addition, the follow camera breaks above a certain framerate for some reason. You can prevent that by limiting your framerate. How do you limit your framerate?OK first off I'd like to re-iterate that this is for people with NVIDIA GPUS ONLY. First off, you'll want to download nVidia Inspector (direct download link). Unzip that bad boy, place the contents wherever and open up nvidiaInspector.exe. You should be greeted by a screen that looks a bit like this: Click the button that I've helpfully highlighted in red. Another screen will pop up that looks a little something like this: Now click in the box at the top that I've highlighted in red, and type in it "Robot Arena", and then hit enter. The rows of techno mumbo-jumbo below it should change. Now look for the "Frame Rate Limiter" option under the "Refresh and Sync" section, as I've highlighted in the image below. Set that to whatever framerate you want, I'll talk more about that later. I've set mine to 120fps. So we're done, right? Nope! Now you have to click on the "add new game" icon I've highlighted in blue on the image below, and select your ra2 exe. I renamed my .exe just to make this guide more confusing, but yours should just be called "Robot Arena 2.exe". Look at the image below for reference. (If you have multiple copies of RA2, for example one for Stock, one for DSL etc, you should repeat this for each different version, adding each version's .exe). Now you can click the big green "Apply Changes" button in the top right, and close nVidia Inspector. We're done! What framerate should I choose? The main choice here is 120 or 60. I chose 120fps because a 60fps lock gives me ghastly input lag, but I'm not sure if that's because I use a 144hz monitor like a weirdo. Your monitor is 60Hz, so it shouldn't make a massive difference. Try them both out I guess, I think 120fps will feel better but it might still break the follow cam whereas I'm fairly sure 60fps won't. You might have also seen that you can choose a temperature instead of a framerate. Don't bother. Why don't I just force enable V-sync, record with FRAPS or do one of the other million methods of FPS capping?A few reasons. I couldn't force V-Sync through inspector the the nvidia control panel, which is really weird. And it causes input lag, although i'm not sure if it would cause more than this method at 120fps. Recording everything with fraps is obviously incredibly impractical and comes with a performance penalty. While my method is a PITA to implement, it has no real downsides except the minor input lag introduced (which will be an issue with ANY FPS-limiting method). It didn't work! How do I fix it???You messed up. Go google it or re-read the tutorial, dumbass.

So I've seen too many gifs and videos of people recording their monitor with their phone camera, and it looks like ass. So here's my guide on how to properly record RA2 gameplay so you can share it with the world. Step 1 - Download OBS:You can find it at this webpage. click on the big "Download OBS Studio" button Step 2 - Configure OBS:So you're gonna have to edit the settings on OBS. It should start up looking something like this: If there's anything in the "Sources" section, right-click it and click remove. Otherwise, right-click in the Sources section, mouse over "Add" and select "Game Capture". Just click OK, it doesn't need to be configured. Also, left-click the speaker icon next to the mic/aux bars. It should turn red. Nobody wants to hear your microphone when they're expecting to watch RA2. Next, click "Settings" above the exit button, and below Studio Move. Click "Output" to view the output tab. Those are my settings. There are a few things going on here. Video Bitrate is, for all intents and purposes, the quality of your video. Bigger numbers mean better quality, but also bigger video files. I set mine to 5000, you can experiment going higher or lower. Keep in mind that I'm recording in 1080p in 60fps, lower resolutions and framerates require less bitrate. You may not have the option for NVENC for your video encoder. Rule of thumb here is to open the list and, if you see any hardware options, choose them. Otherwise, go for software (x264). In the recording section below that, you can change where you're saving your video files to (I'm saving mine to D:/Tutorials). I also set my recording quality to High, which actually makes it higher quality than the bitrate you provided above. You can select the top option in the drop-down list (same as stream) and edit the bitrate to have finer control over your video quality. Set your encoder to the same as above Now onto the Video settings Set the top 2 settings to the maximum resolution your monitor allows. My monitor goes up to 1080p, so I entered the option of 1920x1080. Below that, the default framerate is at 30. I changed mine to 60, but beware that it doubles the size of your video file. If in doubt, leave it at 30. Finally; the hotkey settings Those are the only 2 hotkeys you need to change. I set them to the same thing, but you don't have to. Top hotkey starts your video recording, bottom hotkey stops it. Step 3 - Configure your RA2:There's no point recording in whatever resolution you've selected if RA2 runs at a lower one. You need to go into your RA2 folder and open ra2.cfg in notepad (or notepad++). Edit the FSDisplay and FS3DDisplay settings to match your own. They are the 4 lines below the first 2, as you can see in the picture below. In obs I set my resolution to 1920x1080, so for the width lines I change the number to 1920, for the height lines I change it to 1080. Step 4 - Recording:Open up your RA2 with OBS running, pick your bots and arena, start a match and press your record hotkey. Then just watch. When the match is over, press your record hotkey again. Pretty simple. I would strongly recommend using the Action Camera for recorded fights, which you can find in GTM's download section. Step 5 - Postproduction and uploading:So you have your video file, what do you do with it? Well, you could just upload the video file outright to a site like YouTube to share the video, or to gfycat to make a gif out of it. You could also open the video file in a program like Windows Movie Maker to add music in the background or to add multiple recordings together into 1 video, for example to make a challenge video out of 3 separate matches. If you don't know how to do that, you can google some windows movie maker tutorials, I'm not teaching you So yeah, that should be everything you need. Please stop making crap videos and do it properly. AddendumOK so there's a couple other things you need to know. If you're on a seriously potato PC, OBS may lag your RA2 when recording, especially if you're on an older laptop. Try to record on a desktop, laptops are REALLY not made for video production unless you're dropping ungodly amounts of money on a laptop. If you don't have a choice, you can always fiddle with the Output settings in OBS, change the encoder preset to High Performance, and change the recording quality to "Same as stream". It's also worth fiddling around with different encoders to see which works best. You can also reduce your resolution from 1920x1080 to 1280x720. If you're on a laptop, ensure it's plugged into a charger and its cooling vents are not blocked. Change your power plan from balanced to high performance in windows. Close down extra programs running in the background. If OBS is still lagging after the above tips, you're best off pirating FRAPs I guess, but YMMV, I remember FRAPs as having a higher performance impact than OBS. Other alternatives you could look into include Camtasia Recording Studio, Bandicam, or even MSI Afterburner's recording features. Just make sure you pirate paid-for recorders so we don't have to see the bandicam watermark above your videos. If you're looking to edit and render your videos for a more professional look, it's worth looking into (read: pirating) Adobe Premiere or Sony Vegas. Make sure you're rendering to an MP4 file, with a bitrate of 12mbps for 1080p 60fps, or 8mbps for 1080p 30fps. Having a beautiful framerate and high resolution means nothing if you rape your footage with compression artifacts.

Title, really. Since we discovered how broken mechavore discs and frenzy hammers are, there has been a huge dive in interest in DSL non-IRL tournaments. Of the last 3 DSL 2.2 DSL-S tournaments, all have been won by bots spamming mechavore discs or frenzy hammers (scrapheap challenge 2, the cauldron 2, clone clash). Maybe the dip in interest is due to the surge in IRL building, but I think people are bored of making bots with only 2 viable weapon choices (weapons that lend themselves to a narrow range of bot types as well), and watching tournaments where the bot without the OP components is at a severe disadvantage.
Is it worth considering moving back to DSL2.1? Even though it wasn't the most balanced mod ever, it had a more varied metagame than DSL2.2 does right now.
