you guys kick ass. if the pneumatics revamp is anything like this i'm sure you'll knock it out of the park. keep up the good work!

also mark joerger won robotica with a stripped out lawnmower and then proceeded to suck sh** at robot wars with said lawnmower. he also spends his free time complaining about modern combat robotics on facebook. not saying his info isn't valid, just that there's likely better sources than him for modern robot info

Discussion / GTM's Builder Rankings - 1st Edition
« on: May 20, 2020, 02:32:39 PM »
Hello everyone, and welcome to the first edition of the GameTechMods Builder Rankings! This is a project I assembled with the help of a hand-picked panel of community figureheads with the purpose of determining who we think best exemplifies the current standards of Robot Arena 2. We plan on posting a new edition of the rankings every four months, based exclusively on the previous four months’ worth of builds. The first ranking period of the year has just finished, and the panel has come together to determine the first edition of GTM’s Elite Eight.

The Power Rankings Panel consists of:
*Badnik96
*TheOrcCorp
*Geice
*Hoppin
*Sevalent
*Cringey

The Elite Eight were chosen subjectively, based on the quality, consistency and uniqueness of their builds over the last four months. We hope the publication of these rankings gives people the push they need to improve their builds in an effort to appear on the list and establish themselves as GTM’s Elite.

We’ve also decided to acknowledge two players who, while they may not have made the Elite Eight this season, have shown marked improvement over the past four months. These “rising stars” have shown a drive to get better at the game, and could potentially crack the Elite Eight in the coming seasons.

Without further ado, here’s the first edition of GTM’s Elite Eight, starting with our two Most Improved Builders:

Most Improved: evil toaster
Evil toaster has been a part of the GTM community for a good couple of years now, and he’s been slowly improving his building over that time. He disappeared for a while before storming back into the scene with a solid pair of robots to start off his 2020 portfolio. Most notable for him is the stylish heavyweight spinner Rat King, the bot that really brought him to the panel’s attention. If he can keep building things to that level of quality, he could easily work his way into the Elite Eight soon.

Most Improved: ThatDiscordGuy
TDG is relatively new to RA2 and the GTM scene, but his building has already improved in leaps and bounds over his first few months. Take, for example, Crime Scene, one of his more notable designs, which has evolved from a chunky box into a sleek, if rather plain, vertical spinner. While his designs lack originality a lot of the time, he has picked up on the fundamentals of building very quickly. Look out for him to continue working and improving his building, as he could crack the Elite Eight in a very quick fashion.

Now, here's the Elite Eight, starting from eighth and working up to first. Big thanks to Hoppin for putting together these graphics!

nicky's tournament gave me something to do and i wanted to prove the nerds in discord wrong about me not contributing to sh** anymore so i built a thing.

i kinda took inspiration from mess maker, who i loved watching in gtmcs2, and insectoid because insectoid is badass. it's decent but not great. mediocre wedges and it isn't amazing at gutripping, but it's serviceable enough to beat a good chunk of the ai.

but i wasn't satisfied, so i went back to the drawing board:

it's a lot messier-looking, but i think i like this one more. giving it irons instead of blades freed up a large chunk of weight, so i was able to give it some proper wheel protection. irons also do a much better job of killing things in one hit. using sickles as trappers works a lot better, since the sickle's weird-ass mesh lets wedges slide between them and the rest of the bot so it can dig into chassis more easily. it gets under just about every wedge in both reforged and reier's pack so i have some high hopes for it.

it weighs 498kg with 2 ballasts. if i were to do this again (and i may still try that) i think i might try a u-shaped chassis so i can spread the wedges out further and chassis-mount the drive.

looks like you're still in that beginner phase of making a chassis before knowing what you want to make. reducing chassis space is important so you can allot the most weight possible towards other parts of your machine. shrink the chassis around the components you want to use and see how much weight that saves you.

your weapons synergy looks pretty bad, since your piston is going to push the opponents out of the way of the hammers. i'd focus on just one or the other for now, and just try to make it as strong of a poker or hammer that you can.

Hellbender, drum thing. an attempt to give the undercutter above 4wd morphed into this. it has far too much power for its own good, considering the drive had to be geared down to 15:1 just to be controllable. pretty good drum and maneuverability, though. i'll probably chuck it into parsec rumble just to see where the flaws are since it beats most of my other robots pretty consistently

did you uv-map the model properly?

I think I've gotten the hang of the process now - I'm also noticing that something's going wrong somewhere down the line.

The first 6 or so attempts at making a chassis produced chassis with individually colorable panels (some with more paint bleed than others), but the most recent .bots don't allow for individual panels to be colored, it turns the entire chassis template to that color.

I've not been deviating from the tutorial at all, so I'm quite confused as to why it's going belly up all of a sudden.

whose tutorial are you following and have you uv-mapped the model at all

also what program are you making .objs in?

also while i'm here, can i request the ability to run a weapon off of multiple motors? this would help tremendously with trying to make more compact robots.

Were you thinking two motors, both turning the same belt?  You can request it, but it really complicates the component assembly tree.  I.e. it isn't really a tree structure any more.  The .RR2bot file and component assembly is currently built around a tree structure.  Each component has exactly one parent component.  With the possibility of two parents, things become much more complicated.
that's what i meant and that's what i figured. unfortunate, but if you ever get the chance to try something like that i'd really be grateful.

it is 100% safe to use. it won't break your computer or your game.
