Tournament Archives / Robot Wars 2005 - Signups
« on: June 19, 2013, 08:19:57 AM »

Worst name I know. But who cares? It's ROBOT WARS! ROBOT WARS FINISHED IN 2004! THIS IS LIKE THE YEAR AFTER!

Essentially this is just a small tournament to see what you lot can do. I want you to make an IRL sequel to a Robot Wars robot, that must have a very similar design, but could be improved in some way. For example, you could make Diotoir with a more powerful flipper, or even something like an effective Fat Boy Tin. The choices are yours. However. There are more catches.

The tournament itself is only half the battle.

Essentially, when the splashes are created, I will require EVERY competitor to rate each other competitor's IRL-ness, honestly, on a scale of -2 (borderline not-irl) to 2 (Very IRL) via PM to me within 2 days of splashes being released (the videos will then commence).
This vote will also be opened up to anybody not competing in the tournament - again to be closed before videos release.
Voting will therefore happen in private and score additions/subtractions announced after the tournament has run.
Your placing in the tournament will also get you points, so on top of the potential -2 to 2 you score in the vote,
1st place = 5
2nd place = 4
3rd/4th = 2
5th-12th = 0
Therefore, as you can see, winning the battles doesn't necessarily correlate to a tournament win. Good luck ;)

But for now, some:
RULES
1) IRL DSL 2.1 MW.
2) 1 entry per person, with 12 slots available. Ty4er as RIP3 winner gets a guaranteed spot should he want it. Signups will be open for 24 hours to allow all a fair chance to enter, then the spots will be randomly given (via the randomizer) to submitted robots. If these robots are then not legal, the spot will be re-rolled.
3) The arena will be Wham's NEW RW ARENA.
4) I have the right to FULLY REJECT your bot if it does not meet standards. Yes, this is even before the IRL Vote.
5) No glitches, Narmour, DSA, etc. BFE may be allowed in some circumstances, eg bot height.
6) Only IRL Bot types - no face spinners or popups.. you know the drill.
7) No multibots. Sorry. There will be 2x4-way rumbles preventing multibots. But perhaps if I run another, you can get your Gemini 2's in ;)
8) 1 Judge Burst MAXIMUM.
9) Havok's will be judged on severity. If they affect the outcome, they get 1 restart. Any more and it's eliminated.
10) No loser's bracket. Just letting you know. Single elimination.
11) Battles will be 2 minutes long.
12) I can/will AI but please try to yourself
13) No updates. Your submission is final, due to limited spots.
14) The winner gets a free ticket into my next tournament, which will be a sequel to this if I find it successful.
15) DO NOT SEND ENTRIES BEFORE SIGNUPS OPEN or I will disqualify you. No excuses.
16) Anybody successful in entering must also compete in the IRL Vote which will have a 2-day deadline after splashes are released. If you miss the deadline, you will be disqualified from any points scored (and even if someone scores negative points, you will come below them), however will still 'compete' in the videos.
17) Reskinned components will be accepted as long as they are made as their own component (eg do not overwrite DSL's default skins for the component). I will check for any sneaky stat changes.

JUDGING
I will judge the tournament, along with possibly Mazakari and/or Sonny_Resetti, depending on if they get their entries into the tournament.
Voting will be based on the RW System

SIGNUPS - SIGNUPS CLOSED
CURRENT NUMBER OF ENTRIES: 13

Awards time.
Will understand if no-one votes because long tourney and nobody's interested, but it'd be nice if we could get some awards distributed. (:
You could probably vote for most of these just based on splashes.
When awards are done, I will also release updated RIP Rankings, possibly for the last time.
You may vote for anyone you wish, except yourself, and in whatever categories (it's okay if you miss some out). Vote via a reply or PM before
1PM UTC on Wednesday 19th June (tight turnaround because why not ;P)
As it'll take me forever to re-do all the tags to put the splashes here, here's a link to the SBV thread. https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php?topic=11130.0

Discussion / Building Styles - A Discussion
« on: May 30, 2013, 05:52:35 PM »
It strikes me that some of our newer members take strides towards saying they are not DSL Standard builders, but Realistic builders, or IRL Builders.

What some may not realise is that Realistic falls upon DSL Standard a lot more than IRL.

The 3 main building styles in RA2 are
1) Unrealistic - only generally used in stock. Here, components can go through each other, meaning stacking components and moving parts going through batteries for example is perfectly legal.
2) DSL Standard, once known as Realistic - Obeys the age old DSL Realistic Rule. No components can pass through each other, but intersects may be allowed, for example if components can be welded together in a certain way, or a hole can be cut in the chassis. DSL Standard is a lot like IRL without the axle supports and aesthetic approach. A much better explanation of this can be seen here - https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php?topic=12002.0
3) IRL - EVERYTHING should be possible and plausible on a real life bot. No floating axles, no superthin extenders holding up 220kg motors, etc.

It comes across to me that some may not know the true meaning of DSL Standard, taking it to be much more like Unrealistic.
An example here (sorry to use you) is this recent bot by Helloface199

In the posts after he strives to say that this is realistic (implying IRL) - however the thin poly skirts would clearly not be done in real life, therefore making this either a technically illegal IRL bot, or a Standard bot for someone just getting into building. And I think in this case it is the 2nd.

Take this post apart as you will, and feel free to add/argue against me.

Just wanna let anyone that didn't know know that there are GTM Skype groups - 3 in total I think:
1) The one I admin, with most people in it
2) 09/Noodle's more exclusive one
3) The other one about LoL ;p

Anybody that isn't involved in any of these that wants to, feel free to let any of us know.
Bear in mind that although these are partially moderated, well I know mine is, profanity is almost certain and with Andy around.. possibly nudity too. :P

Existing Games / New Humble Bundle!
« on: November 29, 2012, 05:18:14 PM »
Dunno who knows or cares but new Humble Bundle (Although not 'indie' this time)
Pay what you want (min $1) for a pile of games. You control what proportions of the money go to developers (THQ this time), charity, and the guys that organize it.

The Games:
Darksiders
Metro 2033
Red Faction: Armageddon
Company of Heroes
Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts
Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor

BUUUUUT if you pay more than the average (currently $5.58) you also get:
Saints Row the Third.

Hm. Seems worth it to me. :3

Off-Topic Discussion / Songs That Changed Your Life
« on: November 10, 2012, 05:24:23 PM »
Okay, the title may be a little melodramatic, but basically, I thought it'd be cool for everyone to share a couple of songs, say 5 max, they think have been most influential to them as a person or their music tastes.
Just 2 rules.
1) Try not to include a band twice. This is for me as much as anyone else, a Muse-spam list would not be interesting.
2) ABSOLUTELY NO SNIPING AT ANY PERSON'S CHOICES. It's quite a personal thing, in my opinion, and is absolutely unfair to go laughing at someone.

Okay, I shall start...
1) Welcome To The Black Parade - My Chemical Romance
This song, as much as I dislike it now, started me on the road from a purely 'indie-rock' kinda range to the music taste I have now developed.

2) Stockholm Syndrome - Muse
Well who saw this coming? To be honest, it was so hard to pick 1 Muse track that I just picked the one that still really gets me to this day. The way it just keeps getting bigger and bigger is insane.

3) 5:15 - The Who
The Who are just such an amazing band. This track really opened me up to that whole area of music, and made Quadrophenia one of my favourite albums. The blend of brass instruments and keys with the band themselves is excellent.

4) American Idiot - Green Day
This blew my mind when I first heard it, but I guess I was too young to keep looking into their music or my taste would have developed much earlier than 2006 with Black Parade.

5) Never Gonna Give You Up - Rick Astley
Never take things too seriously. Always have a bit of fun. Let's Rickroll some unfortunate chap.

6) Sorry You're Not A Winner - Enter Shikari
The first screamy song I got into, and the electronic influences may have been the source of my fondness for a bit of deadmau5 now.

Welcome, to RIP3!
This is the tournament putting a fresh twist on clusterbots, with LW/MW clusters, which must have differing types (with flails and popups banned) and a team name/theme.

Modifications / PokAImon: Releases
« on: June 05, 2012, 07:24:04 PM »

Beta released!
PokAImon (about 38mb)

PLEASE take note:
You should install this onto a completely clean version of DSL 2.1, after DELETING the AI folder. Remember to press Yes to All when overwriting files :D

Please let me know of any issues with it, so I can fix them all up for you :D
Apologies for fail UI, I did all that with no internet connection, using images I found on my laptop and rubbish paint.net skills.

What is PokAImon?
PokAImon is a Pokemon related RA2 DSL mod, where 6 teams are replaced with Pokemon bots entered in the 'Pokemon: The League Of Getehem' tournament. It also features a Pokemon Stadium arena, Pokemon UI, music and sounds, more hidden components used in other bots, and a few other little hidden tidbits!

UPDATE: 8th February 2013
There's not really a lot I can do to update this pack, however, I realise most people aren't interested in replacing their AI bots with random Pokemon. So, because of that...
PokBOTPACKmon
PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF ANYTHING HERE DOESN'T WORK. Hopefully I included all components necessary for all the bots in the designs folder.
PokMUSICmon
I changed the DSL 2.1 music for PokAImon, and I really liked it. Fancy a change-up? Here you go.
PokUImon
Finally, the little bits of UI I made for PokAImon, including custom battle status indicators and eliminated/knock-out messages.

Tournament Archives / RIP3 Signups!
« on: May 31, 2012, 06:23:43 AM »

Let's do this!

RIP3 is all about Clusters! Except there is a few twists...
1) One part must be LW, the other must be MW
2) The 2 parts must NOT be the same bot type
3) Popups and Flail weapons are NOT allowed.
4) I want a THEME! Even if it's just related bot names, I want to see themes, complete with Team Name and optional Motto!

Full Rules
1. DSL Clusterbots, 1 part LW, the other part MW.
2. No popups or flail weapons
3. Standard DSL building regulations, all realistic, with no outside modifications. No cheatbot2 components or custom components.
4. Double Elimination bracket, 2 mins on clock.
5. 1 havok restart in matches. I will judge this, and I politely ask for no complaints
6. Unless you send your own AI, I will AI it so that the weapons work and it moves properly. I politely ask for no complaints if your bot does not work how you want.
7. I have the right to disqualify any entry finding loopholes, or excessively complaining.
8. The arena to be used is a reskinned Containment Cube with hazards on
9. Placeholder bots are not allowed, however you get 1 upgrade (as long as it's not overly different)
10. There is a maximum of 32 team slots.
11. You MAY team up with someone to create your cluster.
12. You will have 2 weeks from signups opening to get your entries in.
13. Any non-filled spots will be automatic passes for those the randomizer favours :P
14. 1 free restart if either of your team's bots is stuck on arena hazards (eg stuck on/under spikes) - I will be judge of this.
