Discussion / O1's random thoughts 1: Who invented the IRL style?
« on: August 26, 2018, 05:04:27 PM »
As commonplace as this style is, it is kind of in the dark as to who exactly came up with it. I do realize that I may have played a role with my realistic designs before the style became commonplace but there is no way I was close to the first. Who do you think made the first IRL bot, how far back does this style of building go in DSL?

Dang how long til Track Attack fights, I seriously want to see my bot get destroyed, judging by the matchup I have it likely will.

If Reaper wins any fights at all I will be surprised, the bot is a front hinged flipper, and is so unstable due to its cambered wheels, and overpowered drive that it gyros when turning, also it is only the third Middleweight I have ever built, expect my entry to be the SFTW of the tourney.

Edit: Not only will I be surprised if my bot wins a match, but I will stick my dirty socks in my mouth.

Hmm I might enter Track Attack (Heavyweight). It likely won't do well as I am merely an average builder at best, I will need to stick a AI box on her though.

I said I would get this splash done XD. It has been what, a year now? I work slowly, probably my first truly competitive IRL design, it has quite a flush wedge, and that weapon setup actually is stable. It is quite weak against hammers, and drums due to the weak top, bottom, and rear armor.

Could actually be hella competitive if you found some way to save on the weight and replace the beaters with MOE hammers...
I might actually try that.

So lately I have fallen into love with the Metroidvania genre, anyone else here a fan of this fantastic genre of exploration based platforming pioneered by Metroid, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night?

My faves so far are:
Shadow Complex
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Apotheon

thicc bar looks cool
Thanks. The bar itself consists of multiple discs, beater bars, and two of those axle extenders sandwiched between two bars... It is pretty heavy, and as a result doesn't spin that fast, I kind of took inspiration from the bar that M.O.E. had, when designing DeadFrames weapon.

I like the second one, therefore it is that one that gets my vote.

Been a while, College got me bogged down so I can't spare much time...
Anyway here is a new bot from me.

We interrupt the airing of RoboGames to bring you a beetleweight robot the host has made for no real reason other than to enter GTM Live.
(Image removed from quote.)

Meet, Ricochet. Named after some game that is almost as old as I myself am and weighing in at 174.7 KGs, Ricochet's main weapon is a heavy spinning bar powered by a flatmotor. This gives Ricochet a heavy kick that causes robots to bounce around the arena, hence its name. This robot was mainly based off of Hazard, with a few cues to ICE-Wave.

The wheels also like to go through the chassis' top into the bar, but there isn't much I can do seeing as the wheels are as small as I can get them. Just pretend they're concealed, okay? X3
A new robot? Come on, Demon, you can't be serious!
(Image removed from quote.)

This is Gangrenous Leech, or: "How I learned to make Swamp Thing: The Robot". Its main weapons are a front spinner-killer wedge with 2 flamers that fire out sort of similar to that of a snake tongue while its other weapon is a large toothed thwacking tail. Its small compared to other heavyweights, but it can still hold its own quite well.

A long, long time ago... in a really sh** star wars-esque flashback... I made this 'bot called Necrosis.
(Image removed from quote.)
Initially a robot constructed for a challenge match against Robbo, Necrosis had an angled spinning bar that hit extremely low compared to other spinners. This gave it an edge over some robots, but I never used it after that. :c

And now... the MK.II is complete.
(Image removed from quote.)
Necrosis MK.II is a more streamlined version of the same robot with an entirely new design process. A larger base than the previous model gives its weapon, an even larger overhead spinning bar, some great utility. Its also actually skinned. This can self-right, unlike the first version, but it is rather finicky when doing so.

Now to actually try and make GTM Live robots or something...

All three look completely sick... I actually have fond memories of playing Ricochet: Lost Worlds on RealArcade (until GameHouse bought em out and deleted their entire back catalog of titles available on the service. Thankfully the entire ricochet series is now available for purchase on Amazon).

For Necrosis Mk.II did you take inspiration from Apex, because it looks awfully similar?

(edited for grammar)

Try running it in Windows XP compatibility mode?
I don't know about OP's case but my laptop automatically puts the game into XP Compatibility mode which leads me to believe that this is something else... I had this problem as well, and the only solution was to download a fresh install of the game, and put all my bots from the old install into the robot designs folder...

I also noted that this problem is specific to those two mods, and doesn't happen with stock, not sure about Ironforge however as I do not play Ironforge.

So lately (perhaps after playing waaay too much Burnout 3) I have been on a mid-2000's Pop-Punk kick.

This song sounds like it would fit right in on any mid-2000's game soundtrack... This band is from Rome, Italy btw if you are wondering about the quite obvious accents.

95
Crap I was drawn against MNB, and DarkAI for my melee... Oh well I wasn't in this one to win any fights, plus there is always the loser's bracket.
But how do you know what you'll be up against? You haven't seen my bot or MNB, so you could be for a chance if you think you may have an advantage over the other.
Because my bot is, well... One of these:  :SFTW
yknow for a tournament where you could build literally anything these entries are super underwhelming
Maybe because this tournament is more of a fun tournament than a serious one. I built a bot that is very fast (and hopefully very topheavy with its tacked on hammer), so hopefully hilarity ensues. That is why I am actually worried about my draw, because I am scared that my bot won't get the chance to self-destruct in a glorious blaze of  SFTWness.

Im really getting pumped for this.

Me too, and I put the minimum of effort into my bot so I don't expect to do well at all... TBH I will shove my dirty socks into my mouth if it wins anything at all, thats how confident I am that it will fail hard.

Then again, for some of you that seems impossible.

Thanks for doing your jobs. TBH if it weren't for you guys GTM would descend into complete anarchy. Anyway back on topic, I forgot to put these two little acquisitions on my previous list.

  • Creed Chameleon - Siq Of Lazy

Creed Chameleon is a Hawaiian Hip-Hop artist, I would rate the album a 4/5. The album has some rather hit or miss production but a good flow, and lyrics. For me the two standout tracks would be Hell which has this pulsing electronic beat, and wonderfully distorted vocal samples, and Asian Blade which features Japanese MC Meiso Parlous, and has a sort of minimalistic beat, and bilingual lyrics.
  • Squeezer - Streetlife

Squeezer was a German Bubblegum Dance (Itself a form of Eurodance) group that had some slight doo-wop flavor to their songs. However Streetlife is a bad album because instead of sticking to what they knew, Jim Reeves (R.I.P.), and co decided instead to fill the album with ballads,
and slow songs instead of the lightweight, fluffy, dance-pop they were known for. The album has no redeeming qualities, and the ballads are all horrible. 1/5.

Guys can we please not (excuse my french) turn this into a sh**posting thread? This thread is a cool idea, and it would be sad if a mod locked it for us general members sh**posting.

This just arrived today after I pre-ordered it a few months ago. Boards of Canada's remix of Nevermen's Mr Mistake. Side A is the version with lyrics and side B is the instrumental version. Got some pretty nutty art on the picture disc. Part of a limited run too and it was only £7

Pics:

Side A: (Image removed from quote.)

Side B:  (Image removed from quote.)

Also for some reason the GTM uploader decides to show these sideways despite them being the right way up on my end. Guessing it's because I took it on my phone.

It likely is because you took it on your phone... Phones are notorious for doing that.

My latest acquisitions are:

  • Tim's Bio - Timbaland
  • Supavision - Supafriendz
