Real Robotics Discussion / Mortis unmasked
« on: March 22, 2012, 06:26:14 PM »
We finally got a picture of Mortis' insides, which is a big deal because they never explained how they got the tanto blade to fire so fast. ("I'd tell you but I'd have to kill you" was on the team's website.)  So here's the picture, it looks like just a basic clutch mechanism, but I'm not really the authority on these thing, maybe someone else can explain it better:

Chatterbox / NCAA/March Madness
« on: March 14, 2012, 11:25:39 PM »

I realize we have a large non-american population here, so for the courtesy of them, let me explain.  In the USA, people get all riled up over the NCAA  (nat'l college athletic association) basketball tournament in March.  For these 4 bizarre weeks, this college basketball tournament gets more buzz than the professional league - there's no rational thought process that would cause this to happen so we call it March Madness.   The 64 best-performing colleges all get in and are seeded 1-16.  There's a lot of betting on the results.  The winner is usually some backwater college like Duke or Florida State.
Did anyone else fill out a bracket?  A restaurant nearby my workplace is offering free lunches to the person with the most accurate predictions, so I took it upon myself to write down the high seed's name for 95% of the games and randomly add some upsets mathematically use statistical analysis to predict the optimized outcome.

I'm 1 and 1 so far - I haven't checked tonight's results.   I may have made a tiny error in picking Syracuse to make the Final 4 - they lost their key player a few days beforehand.

Real Robotics Discussion / People being unsafe with robots
« on: March 05, 2012, 07:19:13 PM »
I thought it would be funny to have a thread of people being irresponsible with safety precautions in fighting robots.

Here's one I found (cued up to the right place):

Since RFS' article drew so much buzz, I thought I'd try my hand at doing one for Robot Wars.  Originally I was just going to feed him fight ideas, but the more I dug the more I realized I had a lot to say about it.  Eventually I ended up snatching the project for myself.

So here it is, I tried to be raunchy and incisive like RFS, so be warned that it contains approximately the same amount of objectionable content as his (and possibly more, you'll see what I mean).

Full disclosure, what I don't want to hear is "you should have included fight x." I probably did consider "fight x", but in the end I chose the fights (and the rankings) based on what I could write the most about - regrettably that meant that Granny's Revenge, Twn Trwn, and Juggernot did not make the cut.

But yeah, enjoy, tell me what you think; I've been thinking of getting into recreational writing so this might be the start.

Challenge Board / Thyrus vs Sonny_Resetti (Thyrus Wins)
« on: January 27, 2012, 06:01:48 PM »
We're pitting our Noob Warz bots against each other since they both got knocked out in Round 1.  Anyone willing to host?  It's just 1 Stock battle in the Combat arena and we both already have our bots made, so no need to specify a rule set.

General Support / Unhide DSL replica components?
« on: November 30, 2011, 08:59:05 PM »
I can't seem to find some of the replica components, like Supernova's bumper, even with cheatbot2 on.  Even stranger, the txt file for that component isn't in the components menu.  Is it hidden?  How do I get it?  Thanks

Discussion / Public Domain battle music?
« on: October 31, 2011, 04:45:45 PM »
Does anyone know where I can find some public domain battle music?  Typing the phrase into google turned up squat.  I've been offered Youtube Partnership, and I don't think  I can use the Robot Wars songs if I want to make money.

Thanks in advance.

Existing Games / Adult Swim's Robot Unicorn Attack
« on: September 27, 2011, 09:08:09 PM »
What's the deal with that flash game Robot Unicorn Attack?  From what I gather, the objective is to watch a unicorn plummet off a ledge and explode whilst hammering away at the Z and X keys that do nothing.

Is this like some elaborate cover up?  Because I've seen videos of gameplay footage where the game appeared to work, the Wikipedia article mentions nothing of the game not working, and there's even a version for the iPhone.  So what gives?  Are people amused by just watching a rainbow unicorn go Thelma and Louise?  Is this some big joke that the entire world is in on?

General Support / Sorry, another generic "Robot Arena 2 Crashes" query.
« on: September 23, 2011, 11:00:24 AM »
So I recently got around to putting Robot Arena 2 on my new computer - Dell Vostro 3550 (I think it's a 3550, don't have it in front of me ATM) that runs Windows 7.  But I've found RA2 crashes a heck of a lot when I'm dragging the slider bar on any selection menu (importing a bot, importing a skin, picking a robot for an Exhibition match). Actually it seems like literally anything I do outside the botlab crashes it, sometimes when I'm in the Team HQ hub not even moving the mouse, it crashes - the only safe places are the bot lab and during matches.

What happens is, the game screen shifts slightly down and to the right, (It's not fullscreen) and I get the dreaded teal pinwheel.  The window greys out and it says "Robot Arena 2 (Not Responding)" in the header.  It never un-freezes, I always have to force quit when this happens.  Sometimes it crashes the entire system and I have to hit the power button and restart.

I know this is a vague description of the issue, but I'm hoping there's a common fix.  Any help would be appreciated, this is really interfering with replica building, and causing me to throw things and punch walls.

General Support / Exhibition match problem
« on: September 13, 2011, 12:17:19 PM »
I'm having problems doing exhibition matches with the human teams.  Everytime I pick a bot from one of my teams below first three, it shows up as having no preview picture or name (Enter Bot Name).  When I start the match the game crashes.  I've tried deleting and re-making my teams but it keeps on happening.  What should I do?

Existing Games / 9 Doors sequel! w00t w00t!
« on: September 08, 2011, 06:48:03 PM »
Soooo as I may have mentioned once or twice, "9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors" is the best game I've ever played.  So imagine my surprise when I found out that a out that a sequel has been confirmed for the 3DS!  Between it and Paper Mario, I officially have become interested  in purchasing a 3DS system.  Here's the trailer.  It's in japanese but with English subtitles as annotations.  The antagonist appears to be ...a rabbit.  No idea why, but anyway it appears Zero is back too.  (Zero is the mysterious figure with the gas mask).

You can use this topic to discuss the original "9 Doors" too if you like, PLEASE use spoiler tags when discussing puzzle solutions or something that happens after the hospital room, like so:

General Support / Order of components
« on: August 27, 2011, 09:50:55 PM »
You're probably getting tired of threads started by me, but...

What determines the order that components appear in those menus in the botlab?

I ask because I've somehow created this component with a blank preview, and it crashes my game when I click on it.  But I have no idea what it is, I can't find its corresponding txt file.  I was hoping I could glean some info about it based on where it appears in the menu (incidentally it's right after the Aluminum extender)

General Support / Srimech issues
« on: August 13, 2011, 07:25:02 PM »
I'm having some troubles with AI bots that should be able to self-right, but won't when flipped.  I think it's because they're lying on their flippers or other components and the body itself isn't touching the ground.  I always put "invertible:fales" in the bindings but that doesn't help.  Is there a fix for this?

General Support / Swtich a BMP for a TGA?
« on: August 10, 2011, 08:07:28 PM »
I'm working on a custom-skinned Emergency flipper, and I got to thinking that it would look neat if I could make parts of it invisible, tranpasrent via a TGA file.  Transparencies don't carry over when you convert to a 24-color BMP, so what if I went into the GMF and replaced "flipper1.bmp" with "flipper1.tga"?  Would the game accept that?

Off-Topic Discussion / Fraps lag
« on: August 02, 2011, 08:30:58 AM »
I have the paid version of Fraps, and no matter what framerate I use to record (I've tried a bunch of values between 15 and 60), it always spits out a slow-motion video.  I have 20 Gigs of free memory, I record at half-size, 800x600 window, quality set to low.  Is there anything else I could be doing?

Alternatively, if anyone could recommend a better recording program, I'm ok with paying for it as long as it's not something ludicrous like $600.

EDIT: Something I hadn't thought of; the problem started occurring after I got a new computer and re-purchased Fraps.  It looked to be an upgraded version of what I had before, maybe if I down-grade it will solve the problem.  Does anyone know if this is possible?

Existing Games / Games you didn't like (but thought you would)
« on: July 28, 2011, 01:12:49 PM »
Like the title says, what popular games did oyu not like, and why?  For the sake of argument, only include games from genres that you like.  For example I wouldn't say Call of Duty even though I didn't care for it, because I generally don't like military/war simulators.  So anyways, here are mine:

Super Mario World Advance 4; Super Mario Brothers 3 - No secrets to discover; levels way too short; you can't backtrack; all-around worse than its predecessors

Ocarina of time - Often difficult to figure out where to go (I gave in Dodongo's Cavern btw); little help given by the game; sidequests frustrating and difficult.

Epic Mickey - No backtracking; camera really is that bad; your decision to  be good vs evil has almost no impact on the game (thanks largely to being unable to backtrack); there's no final boss battle; they outright lied about the "forgotten characters" theme.

EDIT: got rid of "Popular" from the title; they don't have to be popular.

It's almost august of an odd-numbered year, and the Combat Robot Hall of Fame will open again.  So, who's everyone voting for?  Make your cases here.  Here are mine

Gyrobot: A 2-pound walker that uses the gyroscopic forces of its flywheel to move itself around.  Very clever way to take advantage of the weight bonus, and capable of tossing its opponents like a tennis ball shooter:

Professor Chaos: A middleweight with a powerful spiral-shaped drum, has a near-perfect combat record:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVTOnV3vcag&feature=related#ws

Warrior SKF: The shell spins and spinning motion winds up the flipper.  Not an ounce of kinetic energy wasted:

Anticide: Hugely powerful flipper in a tiny package:

Upheaval: A sportsman-class powerful flipper with a very strong combat record:

Discussion / Cassius Chrome Head
« on: July 21, 2011, 05:59:39 PM »
I have an idea on how to make a working replica of Cassius Chrome.  I can put it all together except the head is way too complicated. So, is anyone willing to craft a Cassius Chrome Head component?  Once I have that I can take care of the rest of the building.

In terms of size, here are the reference pictures:
http://robotwars.wikia.com/wiki/Cassius_Chrome

I know it's asking a lot but it's a project I've been thinking about and if anyone's bored and needs something to do, I'd really appreciate it.

Like the title says, I've got the body all assembled for my Hydra       replica, but I realize upon inspection that the skin is beyond what I   can do with my skills. So, I'm offering a trade; do this skin justice (More that what I can do which is drawing it in Paint)  and I'll let you pick my next replica.

Anything   from Robot   Wars is fair game, even the ones they   made pullbacks out of.  I'll   let you pick any scale you want, although   curvy and domed shapes like Blendo or Destruct A Bubble will be  difficult, and will look like     <bleep> but if you want it I will  make it.

Here's what the original looked like:

The pattern is the same at the back and right sides

Here's the skin:

BTW The fork-thingies are going to be made from components so they aren't part of the chassis skin

Any takers would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

I'm being told that my new topics are empty when they aren't, and I'm not sure how to resolve this.  I have text and pictures in the message body, and I''ve no idea why it's rejecting my new post.  The section I'm trying to post in is the CAD showcase.  EDIT: I can circumvent it by cutting some of my post but it's still something I thought I should bring to your attention
