25mph is going to be nigh-uncontrollable, 20 is difficult enough without magnets in a heavyweight sized arena.

Realistically a rammer is never going to do internal damage to something that's built decently, especially in smaller weight classes. You're going to be looking largely for controlling fights to get wins via judges or using the arena hazards (if it has any).

Where did you get the tread pods? I'd be interested to get some to disassemble and make a more robust/lighter version for a beetle design I'm working on.

Neutron was being upgraded regardless of if RW came back.

I know, but why go through the whole debacle of applying to RW and making the improvements necessary to Neutron if the live events up and down the country are of equal prestige to RW?

So Robot Wars is the only event now that spinners can run at?

Damn someone should let Battlebots and Robogames know that they can't run spinners any more, I'm sure they'll be keen to know why that is.

If you can't back up your arguments with anything but a personal attack then I have nothing more to say on the matter.

Aaaaaaaa my point was Tornado and Gravity would be able to run at Live events just fine so why does RW have to happen for them to be made?
Just fame hungry?

Also the rw reddit has a fair list Badnik.

Because Robot Wars gives them an incentive for investing the money required. It's essentially the 'World Cup' of UK robot combat. It allows them to show off their engineering prowess to a nationwide audience, as well as getting to be on Televison. You could ask the same question of literally any of the bots who have been built or upgraded specifically for Battlebots or Robot Wars. I'd hardly call it being 'Fame Hungry'. My question to you in that case is why are YOU competing in Robot Wars if the only reason to is being 'Fame hungry'

I want to compete, so I build and apply. It's quite simple. The TV side is irrelevant.

These are experienced teams who build robots anyway. Other teams started in hope, they did not. End of. The teams that were prepping weren't secret about it either, it was a choice made by teams not to prepare.

It's still a big investment to build a new bot or upgrade an existing one for TV. The teams who didn't prepare likely didn't choose to because it's a big gamble to start preparing for the second series before you actually know it's going to happen. Imagine if you'd started investing all this money to ready Neutron up for a second series for it to never happen. It'd be pretty awful, especially considering that Neutron is a spinner and therefore couldn't even compete in live events to recoup some of the costs.

Hi, I'm the guy that has plowed every penny I have into Neutron to get it ready. I have been doing this regardless of whether there was a series 2 or not. Robot wars isn't the end all be all of robot combat, there are other places and other events that we can fight machines at and yes that includes spinners as well.

The point I'm trying to make is that it makes sense to build as quickly and as soon as possible, it both means that you're not just sending in a CAD as an application and that you don't have to build in such a massively constrained time frame.

I understand what you're saying. But take the Hypno Disc team for example. They said that they wanted to compete if there was a series 2 of Robot Wars. We now know that to be true, but they had no idea whether it was going to happen and how much time they would have when they said that. It would have been stupid for them to start building back then for an event which they had no idea if it was going to happen or not, especially as their bot revolves entirely around a weapon type that is nigh on outlawed in the UK apart from a very small amount of events (Robot Wars being one of them). While you may have the time and money to invest based completely on speculation, not everyone does, and a short time window like the one that has been provided has absolutely no benefits over giving teams longer to prepare, which would allow use to see more bots, better bots and have flippers actually be effective.

The fact you think I have more money and time than most roboteers is quite amusing, I'm making less than minimum wage and  I can manage to get a heavy spinner done in time. Why is that? Because I'm building before and don't have to fork out £2000+ in a matter of six weeks to get a machine ready.

As I said there are other events that you can fight spinners at, Robogames for example, if someone can afford to build a heavy, regardless of timescale then they can afford to either pay to go to Robogames, or save to pay for that trip.

If you want to get a machine in and ready in time build it early, people have been saying that since the first episode aired. If people don't want to do that then they have nobody to blame when they can't complete a bot in the timescale that Mentorn have given.

Also, flippers being effective has absolutely nothing to do with timescales, the issues that were caused at the event were based on temperature. They could literally pluck any 4 flippers from the live circuit and the problem would persist because it's an inherent issue with pneumatics.

Got **** all better to do so had the thought ''why not update this thing nobody reads?''

I'll keep it brief, Ash 2 was built and does the thing:

Tanto is currently going under a redesign multiple senses of the word:

That's all I can post publicly without spoiling some stuff.
See you again in another 6 months

Picked up Tanto yesterday, event was meh from my beetles. Hyperion managed some nice hits and took some big ones but kept on going. Noxa just wouldn't play so didn't run.

John Reid turned up on the Sunday with Terrorhurtz and like 90% of the pits went into fanboy mode. Got a picture of Tanto next to it to give a sense of how Tiny Tanto really is:

Took the disc off today after work to give it a cleanup and got a picture of it with Hyperion's heavier weapon to give a sense of scale:

Pretty much everywhere these days. Better engagement and all that.
Didn't know that, thought your bot had two disc teeth as well, with Snappy 2 blocking the view.

Tantos disc is this shape:

Looks really nice, the weapon motor doesn't sound particularly happy during spin up though.

the eyes look wrong imo

robots are robots, not living things
You shut your whore mouth! Tanto is much better with the eyes (they are a permanent fixture so deal with it).

Still amazed we didn't meet in the main competition, I shall avenge Ash at some point. Plus I want to see what Hyperion will do if it actually gets under something as opposed to hitting a flat side.

BW Champs Write up:
My champs pretty much started the day before the champs with me going on the 5 hour train/coach journey down to Craaigs and helping him get Mr Snappy 2 going. While we were doing that however I was replacing a broken aerial on my dx6i when I knocked it off the table and snapped the bind switch and broke the switch itself, this meant that once again Terminus could not fight (100% convinced this thing is cursed now). Hyperion however was working perfectly fine and already had it's receiver bound to my 6i so I could still run it as long as the receiver was okay.

Fast forward to the champs and everything looked to be ready for Hyperion so I put the batteries on charge and awaited the draw. The draw was a mixed bag really, most of the heavy spinners seemed to be spread out amongst the fights and there weren't really any 2 big spinners in the same fight in most cases. In my first fight however I was against Spin Cycle ( a HS that Haz built that is essentially Newton with a slightly different frame) and Pisces which was a HDPE rammer. 2 bots went through from this fight so me and Jamie ended up taking out Pisces first and immobilising it, however for whatever reason the fight was continued and I was threatened with disqualification if I didn't go after and hit Spin Cycle, so I did and threw it, taking a chunk out of the disc and stopping it entirely. After that fight the judges went and spoke to the driver of Pisces and determined that Pisces was still mobile while Spin cycle was not after I hit it, so Hyperion and Pisces went through while Spin Cycle was spent to the losers bracket. To put it in perspective Pisces had to pull out of the next fight because of the damage caused.

Fight 2 was against Lynx and Hit & Miss. Lynx was a pretty nice drum but it was plagued with issues from the get go, in it's first fight smoke bellowed from the motor when it spun up because of a screw resting on the case of the brushless and once that was fixed and the drum was working the only belt that Sam brought with him was snapped by Spin Cycle so it was weaponless in our fight. Hit and Miss was a mainly HDPE lifter with a steel wedge.

After activate was called I spun up and went straight for Hit and Miss sending it about 3 feet into a wall, it was still moving though so I hit it again and sent it another few feet and that hit apparently pulled the link out of it so it was immobilised and out. Lynx was a tricky bot to deal with because of the ablative ring around the main body, any time Hyperions weapon would touch it the ring would simply take all of the force from the hit and move out of the way, after enough hits on it though it was bent upwards and I got a nice hit on the body sending it up off the ground and falling back onto the weapon again forcing some fancy gymnastics. After that Lynx drove to the opposite end of the arena and I landed a similar hit forcing Sam to tap rather than take un-necessary damage.

My 3rd fight (quarter finals) was where I unfortunately went out fo the competition, I was using a relatively small motor to power the weapon (NTM 28-26) and as a result of that the shaft on it was relatively thin at only 3mm and 2.5mm at it's thinnest point. This was the downfall of Hyperion as I went after Spinza (bar spinner) at the beginning of the fight as I knew I spun up faster, I hit Spinza and the shock from the hit snapped the motor shaft at it's thinnest point and ejected the motor shaft and pulley into Spinza's weapon slot leaving me weaponless. I still continued though and pitted Incomplete Control but as I was driving towards myself to pit it and couldn't see Hyperion I drove too far forward and Hyperion just tipped into the pit with Incomplete control eliminating me from the competition.

I'm pretty happy with Hyperion, spins up fast, hits decently hard and is really nice to drive as it doesn't gyro at all. The only improvement I have planned is a larger motor with a thicker shaft as nothing else really faltered throughout any of my fights.

Next bot I have planned is this drum:

400g or so in the drum with m10 countersunk bolts for teeth, ablative side armour will be added once the frame is with me.

Wedge is 2mm Grade 5 Titanium, so it takes a hell of a knock.
That thing was a real bitch to grind, worked nicely though.
Ugh, .8mm is already a pain in the ass, I'd hate to see how many discs had to die to make Snappy happen.
Only the one but there wasn't much left of it afterwards, I'll upload a picture once I get home from work of what was left of it.

Been a while since I posted here, not much has gone on except for finishing off Hyperion:

All that's left to do now before the champs is to put Ash back together now Haz has done some nice pocketing to free up weight for a bigger weapon.

Plans for after the champs are either build a new big vs or this:

If I do build this I am going to need to lower the drum and move it forward so an opponent doesn't have to ride the full length of the wedge to get hit by the weapon.
