It's time for the fourth annual Botober event! As always, the challenge is simple: try to build a bot every day for the whole of October, using the prompts listed below, and post them here or in the RA2 Central Discord for others to enjoy!

-= HOW IT WORKS =-

  • Every day throughout October, you must try and build a robot based on that day's prompt, and post a splash image or screenshot in this thread or in RA2 Central (since GTM's basically dead now lmao).
  • NEW FOR THIS YEAR: You may use either the official Inktober prompts, or you can use an edited prompt list curated by myself, with prompts that I believe are more suitable for combat robot design. Both are provided below, and you can mix-and-match between them over the course of the month.
  • There are no prizes for completing all 31 days. The only prizes are personal satisfaction, and having a fleet of potential new tournament entries. This is meant to be a fun, creative challenge, so please don't push yourself to the point of burnout in trying to complete it.
  • You are free to use any game you like (RA2, RR2, Roblox, GMod, etc.), and any mod/meta you like (Stock, DSL-IRL, Ironforge etc). You are free to use different games/metas for different days.
  • It's fine to build a bot early, as long as you wait until the day of its prompt to post it. Similarly, it's fine to build a bot late if you need to catch up.
  • As ever, I will be taking part myself, and I hope to build past Day 3 this time.

-= THE GOALS OF BOTOBER =-

  • Test your creativity and building skills. Try out different weapon systems, weight classes, and even new games or metas. Don't be afraid to go outside your comfort zone.
  • Build up your roster. The more days you complete, the more new robots you'll have, ready to be polished up and sent into tournaments.
  • Botober is a personal challenge - you're competing against the prompts and your own creative limits, not other people. Don't be discouraged if you feel like other people's builds are better than yours, and don't feel like your creations have to be perfect before you showcase them. Remember, you can always revisit and refine your Botober creations after the challenge is over.

It's time to prepare for the third annual Botober event! As always, the challenge is simple: build a robot every day (or as many days as possible) for the whole of October, using the official Inktober prompts at the bottom of this post, and post them here for others to look at!

=== HOW IT WORKS ===

  • Every day during October, you must create a robot based on that day's prompt, and post a splash image or screenshot in this thread.
  • There are no prizes for completing all 31 days. The only prizes are personal satisfaction, and having a fleet of potential new tournament entries. This is a fun challenge, so please don't push yourself to the point of burnout in trying to complete it.
  • You are free to use any game and any meta you like (RA2, RR2, Roblox, GMod, etc.), and you are free to use different games/metas for different days.
  • It's fine to build a bot early, as long as you wait until the day of its prompt to post it. Similarly, it's fine to build a bot late if you need to catch up.
  • I will be taking part myself, but will be going on holiday in early October and will likely miss those days.

=== THE GOALS OF BOTOBER ===

  • Test your creativity and building skills. Try out different weapon systems, weight classes, and even new games or metas. Don't be afraid to go outside your comfort zone.
  • Build up your roster. If you complete all 31 days, you'll have 31 robots ready to be polished up and sent into tournaments.
  • Botober is a personal challenge - you're competing against the prompts and your own creative limits, not each other. Don't be discouraged if you feel other people's builds are better than your own - and remember, you can always revisit and refine your Botober creations after the challenge is over.

Contests / Botober 2019
« on: September 15, 2019, 09:31:47 AM »
(First off: I'm not sure if this is the right section. If it isn't, feel free to move it.)

Botober 2019 Logo.png

Last year, I set myself a personal challenge that I dubbed "Botober": build a brand new DSL-IRL bot every day for the whole of October, using the official Inktober 2018 prompts as inspiration. I unfortunately burned out and stopped about midway through, but the idea proved popular and - to my surprise - a couple of other people actually joined in.

So this year, I've decided to open Botober up, and organise it into a proper event that anyone can enter. My intention is for this thread is to act as a central hub, where people can declare their intent to enter, provide feedback, and (once October starts) post their bots.

=== HOW IT WORKS ===

  • At the bottom of this post, you'll find the Botober prompt list. This time, I've taken the Inktober prompt list and replaced some of the prompts with my own, to make them either more interesting, or more suited to RA2 building.
  • While DSL-IRL and RR2 are best suited to Botober, you are free to use any meta you like. You can even mix-and-match: say, build a DSL-IRL robot one day, then an IF Standard robot the next.
  • It's fine to build a bot early, as long as you wait until the day of its prompt to post it. Similarly, it's fine to build a bot late if you need to catch up.
  • I will be taking part myself, but due to prior commitments and my limited free time, I do not expect to complete every day.

=== THE GOALS OF BOTOBER ===

  • Test your creativity and building skills. Try out different weapon systems, weight classes, and even metas. Don't be afraid to go outside your comfort zone.
  • Build up your roster. If you complete all 31 days, you'll have 31 robots ready to be polished up and sent into tournaments.
  • Botober is a personal challenge - it's not a challenge to see who can build the best bots. Don't be discouraged if you feel other people's builds are better than your own - and remember, you can always revisit and refine your Botober creations later on.

Showcases / F1Krazy's RR2 Showcase
« on: May 23, 2019, 07:15:45 AM »
Since this is a thing now...

I'll start with Fait Accompli. I finally got round to giving it the proper toothed scoop that the original RA2 build had, and it's still just barely within the unofficial 110kg weight limit (it weighs 109.96kg). Armour is now 3mm steel all round, save the weapon bulkheads, which are 5mm aluminium. It also only has one battery, so it's screwed as soon as battery life is implemented. Looks good, though!

Stock Showcases / F1Krazy's Terrible Stock Bots
« on: January 07, 2017, 03:17:00 PM »
So I decided to make this showcase a) on the off-chance that I start building seriously in stock someday, and b) because I need some serious assistance with my Stilt Stumble entry, I'm running out of time, and I'm too scared to brave the GTM Discord :dumb)

Here's my bot so far (comedy skin pending):

This is the same setup I've seen everyone else using so far: scoops on the front stilts, wheels on the back stilts. But I must be doing something wrong, because it constantly veers to the left or right and spins round in circles and is generally completely uncontrollable. Is it the angle of the scoops? Is it the way I'm mounting them? Is there something else I'm doing wrong? Oh, and feel free to give me feedback on the rest of the robot, this is literally my first-ever stock robot and it probably sucks.

(397.2, plastic armour because it's just gonna get BFEd to be invincible anyway so might as well save some weight)

Working on a little something for Toreo! and figured I might as well show it off. Might drop the armour down and do something with the spare weight but not sure what yet. I also want to skin it and add some more flame decals because aesthetic.

UPDATE: I realized it was severely under-amped, so I dropped the armour down to 10mm Aluminium and changed the batteries to 4 stacked Energizers. That completely fixed the speed and manoeuvrability problems, and the weapon spins a lot faster too, but now it seems to cause Havoc explosions quite a lot. Which is a problem. Damage output is even more insane, though.

DSL TC Showcases / F1Krazy's DSL Showcase
« on: October 04, 2016, 06:34:36 PM »
I made an RA3 showcase, so I figured I might as well make a DSL showcase while I'm at it. As with the RA3 showcase, I'll be spreading my existing bots out across various posts rather than spamming them all at once. I also have a pretty neat "factfile" format for displaying them, inspired by Guldenflame's showcase.

I'll start with my Redditbots entry Vertigo, as it's a good indicator of how much I've improved over the last month. The Redditbots version was the first bot I ever made in DSL 2.2, loosely based on a bot I made in the RW Mod, and my inexperience really showed: the chassis was too bulky, it can't hit anything with a skirt or wedge, the wheels are uneven so it pulls slightly in one direction, and it has DSA armor because I was still used to the RW Mod, in which DSA still works, and didn't realize it was useless in DSL until I signed up here :dumb) I consider it a flawed prototype, I regret sending it in as early as I did, and honestly I'm astonished that it got seeded 9th when things like Delta got seeded lower.

Enough about the prototype, here's the current version. More compact body, much, much better armour, and wheels that aren't wonky. Wonder how highly this version would've been seeded.

I also have an invertible version of Vertigo in the works, which can handle wedges and skirts more easily and has an even more compact body since I don't need space for a srimech. It's not ready yet, but I do have something else I want to show off now...

Earlier today, I showed Delta's teaser video to a friend of mine, who knows nothing about combat robots. He agreed it was scary, but said it would be even more scary if it had a second flipper on its back. So I made a double-wedge bot with a flipper on either side, just to see if it was possible. For bonus points, one's a front-hinged flipper and one's a rear-hinged flipper. It's good, but nothing special, and the armour is pathetic. More of a curiosity than anything.

(the inner and outer pics were taken from opposite sides, just to confuse everyone :P )

More bots to show off later! For now, let me know what you think of these ones, and bear in mind I'm still learning.
