Discussion / Moldy Sponge 2: a glimpse into the PVP meta
« on: October 12, 2019, 02:44:57 PM »
(I wrote this right after we finished filming CENTAURI 3 while it was still fresh in my mind but didn't post it till now to avoid spoiling the matches)
TCRR: I might riff on this bot a bit but I mean no ill will. I really am glad you entered and I honestly learned a lot from the experience.

okay, so Code Red has kind of blown my mind. I like to think i know a thing or two about ra2 but I didn't see this coming at all.

So I just finished hosting CENTAURI 3, an 8-player pvp tournament using parsec. Code was one of the players that entered, with this... unique design... and, with all due respect, I actually was really close to rejecting it initially because I thought the build was too sloppy. It fishtails and is hard to drive, it's not invertible, has tinfoil armor, and the weapon looks like a joke. my thoughts were it was going to guaranteed die and eat up a slot that a more polished design could fill. especially because the last tournament of mine he entered a bot that was... well. special.

But boy was I wrong and I'm so glad I was. As I talked about in my topic about how pvp will save RA2, I predicted pvp would bring about the rise of a whole new meta and era of innovation if people just gave it a chance. In any AI tournament, this robot would lose 2-0 in both of its matches and be immediately removed from the competition. MS2 got a very neck-and-neck runner-up to a very solid wedgy VS. It consistently won matches, and against bots I thought would trounce it (including mine :rage).

There's a couple reasons why I think it did so well and why I think it matters:

We were all building like we would for an AI tournament. status quo stuff. 2wd wedgy VS, damaging weapons, etc. All of our weapons were front-facing and most of our bots had minimal side protection. You don't need much side protection in AI and most of us just thoughtlessly built around that mindset out of habit. MS2 hard countered a lot of our designs by eating wheels and motors left and right. Call us shortsighted for not putting wheelguards on but that's exactly my point - you have to build differently for pvp and I think that's a very good thing.

There was no way to see it coming. with an AI you can pretty easily predict what the fight is going to be like most of the time, but due to having a human driver, the bot was able to adapt as the fights went along. Code would change up his approach when something didn't work and most of the time it was effective. He'd switch from the plow to the spinner constantly. He didn't overly rely on one over the other, he would swap between pushing into hazards and going on the offense with his spinner and it worked very well.

Also: this. goofy. weapon. my goodness this thing. I swear it ripped some vital component off of every single competitor consistently every round of every fight. In my experience I thought both DSL bars and iron spikes on spinners were subpar. I never build weapons like this. But something about the position of these weapons allowed it to amputate some important part of his opponent like every round. It's kind of amazing and I personally want to look at it more. Without a human at the controls I feel it would do much worse, but that is hardly a negative.

Driving matters. Code is a much better driver than I thought he would be, especially considering how hard MS2 is to drive (its wicked hard). I feel this design would not work if you drive poorly. AI has no such concept.

In all, this isn't your everyday Razor Guy or Insult to Injury V - bots that were pretty bad but had a huge streak of wins or luck - MS2 is a different beast. In a lot of ways it's ahead of the curve. It looks subpar but it's innovative and very solid. Stuff like this is why I feel I can't go back to AI tournaments. you never see upsets like this in AI, at most you feel like it's a fluke. MS2 was no fluke. It may not have set the bot building world ablaze but I think it's a glimpse of how the pvp meta will evolve and that always makes me happy to see. I have never been so happy to lose a match in my life.

Congratulations to the winner
I mean it sincerely when i say everyone did great and made it really enjoyable to host. I appreciate everyone being respectful and very timely and would love to host another at some point in the future, but unfortunately have no idea when that will be. Up in the air if it's MW or LW. Maybe a Nova instead.

That being said, it's time to give out some awards to recognize the achievements of those you think deserve it. The categories are:
BEST DRIVER for who had the most driving skill, using their bot and the arena to their advantage the best.
BEST DESIGN for the most efficient, well constructed build.
INNOVATIVE DESIGN for which design pushed the limits of building and can inspire the building of others in ways maybe not considered before.
BEST NEWCOMER (RedAce, Code Red, Reier, UberPyro) for who you think the best newbie was by attitude, performance, etc.
BEST MOMENT for your favorite moment from a match.

C&P:
My votes:

Competitors are encouraged to vote, but you may not vote for yourself. Voting closes in one week, 10/19.
Congrats to everyone involved!

been a little while since we had one of these. Time to bring back the best tournament ever made :gawe:

FORMAT:
8 entries.
1v1, Bo3, double elimination. 3 min.
The Trov action cam will be used.
Major havoks will have the match restarted as necessary.
The CENTAURI arena. An edited octagon with the same geometry, but hammers do more damage, pits open after :30s, and floor flippers are less powerful. One of the benefits of human driving is that we aren't stupid and can dodge and use hazards. Use this to your advantage in both designing your bot and driving it. practice driving in the octagon it is the only thing that matters in the world
North American entrants only. Sorry to the others. Even with Parsec, overseas latency is a problem.

BUILDING RULES:
Ironforge 1.2 LW. Ironforge because it's the most competitive meta and LW because it's less crash-happy and easier to build for those not as confident with IF.
DSL-S ruleset. as always
No external programs allowed (BFE, RA2CF, Ro7B) except for skinning. The exception is BFE editing the chassis height lower, but components must fit in legally! I WILL check.
Entries must show a high degree of controlled movement.
Be creative/innovative. Not technically a rule, but try to make something to be remembered. Preferably something that is difficult to AI. Something crazy that works. Go nuts!
No joke entries. This tournament is a showcase to push the envelope of what new designs work in RA2. I’m not going to waste a slot on a bot that isn’t designed to compete well.
The builder does not HAVE to be the driver. I need the builder's blessing if you are driving their bot, however.
You are allowed to use the same bot you used in Centauri 2 if you are entering again.
I reserve the right to deny any entry for any reason.

Build well. Skin well. Drive well. Let’s make this a tournament to be well remembered. Online tournaments will extend the life of RA2, let’s try our best to make this one work. Make a good and cool bot.

SIGNUPS (close Friday 9/6):
APPROVED
1. Thrackerzod - Exactly Lethal
2. RedAce - Hell March
3. NightRaven - Push for Pit
4. [cringey] - Ground Zero 5
5. 8bean - No Train No Gain
6. TCRR - Moldy Sponge 2
7. UberPyro - Sledgehog Mini
8. 090901 - jefffff

I will enter only if we are short a competitor by the end of signups. I would use this undercutter.

For me to accept your entry, you need to send me a PM with ALL of the following files/information:
TWO IDENTICAL copies (or more) of your bot (each with differing keyboard controls, or alternatively, keyboard and gamepad). The inputs can be whatever you want as long as you pick only ONE color from this diagram for each copy:
This is so two people can potentially play on the same keyboard layout. Learn how to drive well with both, as you will likely be required to.
Timezone (Pacific, EST, etc)
Times and days available to fight (be generous please). Saturday and Sunday if at all possible. I will try to work with what you got. But remember that you have the potential to fight any entrant, so the more time you have available, the better. Fights under ideal circumstances don't last more than 10 or 15 minutes, but plan for perhaps up to 45.
Parsec user ID Link to register

I will not accept your entry until ALL of the above has been submitted and the bot is approved. If you are confused, ASK ME!
Note: Again, the builder of the robot doesn’t necessarily have to be the driver. Not everyone is good at both, and that’s fine. If you are planning on driving someone else’s bot, you need to say who built it and I also need a PM from the builder giving their blessing.

Once I check and accept all the bots I’ll make a public google spreadsheet with the timezones for all participating members, and we can set the bracket and fight times from there. I’m fully aware we may need to reschedule some. I’ll give people notifications of their fight times & dates as far in advance as I can. This may seem complicated, but it's really not that big of a deal in practice. Previous competitors will also help you out if you need it, it really is a fun group of folks to play with.

Feel free to ask questions. Let's do this.

Welcome to NOVA. This is a tournament series I am starting where I host a new bracket weekly/bi-weekly/whenever. Basically a mini-centauri with 4 competitors that I can do pretty casually. Each Nova will have a different theme/meta/gimmick/etc.

FORMAT:
4 entries. First come first serve. PM me or contact me on Discord if you want to join.
1v1, Bo3, double elimination. 3 min.
The Trov action cam will be used.
Major havoks will have the match restarted as necessary.
North American entrants STRONGLY PREFERRED. Overseas latency IS a problem. If you are not NA but do a lag test with me and it's acceptable then you will be accepted.

THIS WEEK'S RULES:
IRONFORGE MW BUILDOFF
You have 5 TINY MINUTES TO BUILD YOUR ROBOT. Don't build it ahead of time. I will record you building via parsec :gawe:. paint and wiring won't be counted in the time limit.
I reserve the right to deny any entry for any reason.
The stock CLAWTOP arena will be used this time.

SIGNUPS (close once I accept 4 competitors):
APPROVED
1. Reier
2. Team Code Red Robotics
3. 8bean
4. RedAce

BACKUPS/CURRENTLY UNAPPROVED

I WILL not be entering this time. why not.

For me to accept your entry, you need to send me a PM/discord message with ALL of the following files/information:

These will be pretty casual tournaments. Since there's only four entrants scheduling should be pretty easy and done on the fly. Preferably be available evenings and weekends. Just don't enter if you can only play at tues at 4:15-4:30am or some crap like that. Use common sense.

Feel free to ask questions. Here we go.

Tournament Archives / NOVA 1 - Online Mini-Tournament

novaalpha.png

hey. I want to do some small online tournaments for fun that are a little easier than centauri. we will likely get another centauri at some point too.
here's what I'm thinking. I want to be able to film these in an afternoon pretty easily. A league-type setting will be best for this I think where I'll do one every week or two and i'll do a bunch hopefully so if you miss one you can enter another no big d.

I'll host a new one every week/other week/whenever.
4 competitors. first come first serve.
Same basic rules as centauri (controls, setup, etc). Probably 1v1, Bo3, double elimination, 3 min unless stated otherwise.
There will be a different theme (meta, arena, gimmick, etc) every week. I will probably decide most in advance but I will open some to votes. I think I'll open the first one to a vote just to get some suggestions and test the waters.
NA entrants only most likely again for latency reasons. I can be convinced otherwise if we do a lag test and it's acceptable.

Here's some ideas:
10 min build-off
Pick a stock ai HW
mystery meta
random arena
everyone submits a bot and you have to drive someone else's
n00b warz: pvp
flyers
walkers
winner drives the losers bot (thanks thrack)

So. suggestions? I'll probably do this next week and name a theme after i get some feedback then first come first serve. I want this to be pretty casual. My personal votes are for pick a stock bot or thrackerzod's suggestion.

Modifications / Ironforge 1.2 Update
« on: October 07, 2018, 05:32:17 PM »
Hey everyone. Some of the top Ironforge builders, geice, 090901, and myself have a bit of a surprise for you. For the past week we have been working on an """"unofficial"""" (official) 1.2 update to Ironforge. 123STW, the original creator of Ironforge, has visibly left the community and will be missed. We have attempted to reach out to him asking for his permission to let us to do minor updates but he is MIA. Under those circumstances, we decided to go ahead without explicit permission. (UPDATE: He has PMed me and said it's ok.) We have made several additions and tweaks that we think will improve the building experience for everyone. It seemed to be a good idea to release the patch before we begin to work on Redace's Reforged AI pack update in order to take advantage of these new features and changes. I hope you will enjoy everything.
          Reier

Ironforge 1.2.1 STANDALONE (Full game, do not need to apply it to a previous Ironforge copy)

Ironforge 1.2.1 PATCH (apply to your existing Ironforge v1.1 game)

---------------

IRONFORGE 1.2 UPDATE LOG

Ant, Mini, and N12 wheels lightened in weight by 50% (roughly).
This was done to encourage the option of using 4WD, especially in lighter weightclasses. Before, wheels were so heavy that 2WD was the only viable option. Now, the torque-weight ratio is basically the same whether you use 2WD or 4WD+. 4WD LW/MWs should be viable now.
The wheels changed still are less efficient than armor panels by a weight-HP ratio. Larger wheels remain unchanged to discourage using them as armor and as due to their size they would likely only be used in HW+ where their weight would not be as much of a factor anyway.

New component - Rubber Wheel
Imported from stock and modified with the Ironforge thin-medium-wide defaults. Ironforge needed an intermediate wheel size between Mini and N12 and here it is. It has weight and HP in line with the other wheels following their weight reduction as well.
1_2rubber.png

Larger wheels and treads now have a small degree of fracture and/or slightly increased HP.
This should hopefully encourage more use of them on larger bots if they are not removed as easily by the opponent. They are still not armor, however.

Treads have had their grip reduced to 0.9 from 1.2.
Small treads especially were nearly straight upgrades from thick wheels due to almost identical grip, weight, but having far higher HP. Hopefully this change should help the treads find their niche as armored wheels instead of an all-around upgrade, especially with the mentioned addition of the small amount of fracture.

All dark and light armor panels have 4 new additional attachment points.
Done to encourage building creativity and a major quality of life change.
1_2armor.png

Car steering and the wide skirt hinge are now able to be attached outside of the chassis. The skirt hinge also has its old version for internal use only.

Heater Skirts/Plow and Treads have all had the flame textures... changed.
Hopefully using these parts should look aesthetically better on more bots now while still being consistent to the style of Ironforge. For those who love 'the meme', the old RADIKOOL flame skins are still available with identical stats as cheatbot2 parts, never fear.
1_2heaters.png

Fixed some minor spelling errors and incorrect information in several descriptions.

---------------

The changes should not penalize existing robots in any meaningful way, the exception being the minor grip nerf of the treads. The biggest change you will likely notice in most bots is that they will now be lighter due to the wheel changes. All other changes exist to hopefully encourage creativity and balance. No other weights or damage values were edited (motors, weapons, etc) so you don't need to worry about bots you've built being suddenly overweight or underpowered. and theres no mechavore disks in ironforge anyway  ;)

Many thanks to 090901 and geice for helping balance and doing most of the gmf work, and to redace for hosting and organization.

Discussion / fall damage in ra2
« on: October 04, 2018, 06:27:55 PM »
I kinda wish ra2 had fall damage. when I toss a robot 30ft in the air it makes me a bit sad that it takes -20pts and is totally fine. in real life that thing would be toast.

ra2 does have fall damage. you notice it the most in stock where the components and armors are weaker. it's still ineffective, but i've seen more than 1 pixel on the armor HUD go down when I've tossed bots across the arena before. in DSL or especially ironforge fall damage is a complete non-factor.
GTMCS1 tried to fix this with their arena by having a damaging floor. that made all sorts of other problems.

i've got a fix. nerf the HP of all parts in a mod down by like ten times. i'm serious. fall damage in ra2 is basically a constant coded into the exe, the only other thing to do is reduce the HP and DP all parts by a large factor and then by design fall damage would rise dramatically. it wouldn't affect fights since all parts would still be balanced with each other. if you get DP values and such too low there might be rounding issues and stuff but the main theory is sound.

I doubt any mod will take advantage of this, just thought i'd mention it.
