Ironforge TC Showcases / Scrap Daddy Ironforge Design
« on: August 13, 2014, 05:26:32 PM »
Hello friends, here are the bots I have built in Iron Forge. If you haven't already, go download 123's mod; it's one of the most comprehensive and balanced mods released. I've been messing around for the past few days and it's great for building IRL. Anyway, onto the bots:

HW - D0g. Built for Iron Forge IRL. D0g can launch other bots pretty good with two perms spinning the largest teeth.

Here are some non-IRL bots I built in Iron Forge:

Both pretty generic, but I was just getting used to the new components.

Comments/thoughts are appreciated.

Tournament Archives / RA2: Final Battleground - Rules and Regulation
« on: April 29, 2012, 01:08:38 PM »

Alright folks, welcome to RA2: Final Battleground, time to decide who's the best of the best out of each weightclass. We're going to start with stock lightweight and alternate stock and DSL and go up in weight until DSL SHW and a champion has been decided in each weightclass. Unlike half of the tournaments we've been seeing lately, this one is going to bones robot battling. No gimmick, no stupid arena, just pure bot on bot mayhem.

RULES:
#1 - The first season will be Stock Lightweight, meaning all normal stock building glitches are allowed. Hax Mode, BFE, AAM, and anything done outside the bot lab is not allowed. Any attempts to find a loop hole will immediately be disqualified. You know what Stock means.
#2 - AI parts are allowed, except for the 140cm square extender.
#3 - Battles will be 1 on 1 in a modded BBEANS 4 arena. It will be the exact same dimensions, but without the spinner and box in the middle of the arena. Pretty much the combat zone with an option for flip outs.
#4 - Your bot must show controlled movement. No bumble balls, uncontrollable crawlers, trinity flyers, etc. If your bot cannot track another bot down, it is not allowed.
#5 - I request you AI your bot yourself, but I can do it for you. I will AI it with whatever I think fits and it probably won't be too complex, so don't complain. No cheaty AIs allowed.
#6 - Multibots (aka cluster bots) are allowed with certain limitations. First, the number of bots in the cluster is limited to 2. Second, the combined weight of the two bots cannot exceed the weight limit for the tournament.  Multibots will be fought under the Team battle format so that their points are added together, and they do not get points for hitting each other.
#7 - You can update your bot as many times as you want until the splash has been posted.
#8 - The match will be restarted on four conditions:
1. If a random Havok explosion occurs that affects the outcome of the match.
2. If a Havok explosion can be attributed to a specific bot, that bot will forfeit the match on the second offense. The first offense is a free restart. Each bot gets one free restart for the entire match, whether that includes just one fight or three.
3.) If the two bots get stuck dancing in circles for more than 45 seconds.
If a bot gets stuck and immobilized while it still meets the following three conditions: 1) It is capable of controlled movement. 2) It has enough remaining battery to avoid being counted out. 3) Its control board is undamaged. If ANY ONE of these conditions is not met, the bot does not get a free restart. Otherwise, each bot gets one free restart for the entire match, whether that includes just one fight or three.
4.) If a bot loses only due to an obvious error in the AI. In order to warrant a restart, the error must be obvious enough that there could be no other reason why the bot lost, such as being counted out without trying to move. A miscalculated turn that exposes a wheel isn't obvious enough.
If none of these restart conditions are met, the FIRST match recording will be the final result.
#9 - There will be 15 spaces open. Spots are first come first serve. The bot MUST be PMed to me, not posted in the thread. It can be uploaded to the bot exchange if I'm sent a link in a PM. If you send an illegal robot, you will lose your space to the next legal robot. This is a very strict rule, no bitching. The spaces will be expanded as I'm allowed to.

I will be entering FrontLine:

Good luck, and may the best bots win.

Other Tutorials / Simple Replica Skinning Technique
« on: August 18, 2011, 12:58:12 AM »
So basically Ben Purse has been bugging me how I make my skins on my replicas. I told him to screw around with transforming in photoshop, but apparently is too hard. Instead how having to give a guide for someone to use once I'll just show everyone what I do. In order to do this you need some photo editing software with these features. I'm using Photoshop cs3.

Step 1: Finding the replica.
Well for this method of skinning you need a decent picture to start with. If you can't find any good pictures of the bot, your out of luck using this method. You can however do what Sonny_Resetti does for the most part. You can hand draw the skin, but I'm too lazy for that type of thing. :P

For this example I'll use the bot Janus:

Step 2: Choosing what to transform.
Now that you have some nice pictures to build the replica with, you need to decide what you are going to transform. For Janus I'm just going to use the whole front panel, though it sometime looks better to skin the bot transforming all logos or anything on the bot separated. If you can, try an find as many logos as you can on google before transforming an angled shot off a bot.

Here I use the Polygonal Lasso tool to isolate the front panel. You can also use the magnetic lasso or the lasso to get off entire panels or logos.

Step 3: Separating the image.
At this point if I was actually building a Janus replica I would have the template of the bots skin open in Photoshop re sized to 520x520 for maximum quality, but I'm not so I'm just moving it to a new window opened in Photoshop.

Step 4: Scaling and skewing.
Now go under edit and find transform. Then, skew. I personally use ctrl + t and right click to get to scale and skew.

After a combination of skewing and then scaling to get the size right for the skin template, you should end up with something like this.

Not too bad for like 2 minutes, eh? Should fit nicely on the front panel of a Janus replica or maybe a component and the more time you put into the skin, the better it will turn out. Once you get used to how the image is affected by skewing, it becomes really easy and skinning an entire replica takes like an hour.

If you really want the bot to look nice, you can use a combination of textures and other things off of google to give the bot a good look. Like for the front panel, I could have just skewed the Janus face or even found something similiar on google and just used the same shade of orange font over an aluminum texture. It's essentially what I do for my IRL bots and makes the look fairly life like.

Thanks for reading and keep replica building alive!!! I'm sure there are others who know of better ways to use photoshop than I do (everything I know was basically self taught by messing around) and feel free to right up a paragraph showing how to use Photoshop and I'll edit it right in.

Discussion / New Glitch - Hax Mode
« on: July 01, 2011, 11:17:24 AM »
About three years ago, I was messing around with a Backyard Ripper rebuild when all of a sudden I was able to stack things wherever I wanted.

finally a weird glitch I might have discovered. While messing around with a Backyard Ripper upgrade I was able to do this. For about 20 seconds I was able to put anything in anything.
(Image removed from quote.)
I did that months before I ever posted it since I wanted to see what a few other members thought about it. None of them responded back to me so I ended up forgetting about it.

Apparently, Pyscolone discovered the same things as I did, but was never able to get it to happen 100% of the time

not really much to say until I find a surefire way for it to work 100% of the time.
Well, I did. After about an hour of fooling around with the glitch, I got it to work whenever I wanted it to. That resulted in some crazy never before seen stacking.

The best thing about it? 100% done in the botlab and technically "legal".

Before anyone says anything like "this is just the zero glitch" or "this was discovered a while ago", no. Thyrus rediscovered the Zero Glitch a while back and posted about it here:

https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php/topic,4070.msg158239.html#msg158239

and here's a few quotes proving the Zero glitch isn't really legal in the first place since it uses a custom component.

It is the Zero Glitch and as such has already been included in the rules with that name or under the category of text file editing.

it\'s just stacking?

and yes, the zero glitch was very good. but it isn\'t STOCK. it needs additional parts from outside the game (it\'s what i called text raping, he discovered it, i just perfected it, and made it smaller) i used to use it when testing concepts, to check if they work, it\'s not so good for much else.
The Zero glitch involves editing a snapper motor and making a custom component, whereas this glitch is done completely in game.

From there, I taught Sage how to execute the glitch and we began brainstorming how we could use it to its full extent. After an hour of experimentation, we found out that there were a few quirks that made the amount of stacking limited. After about another hour, we threw those quirks out the window and were now able to stack nearly any component into anything.

General Support / Changing Background in DSL
« on: February 20, 2011, 09:41:46 PM »
I know for a fact the is an easy mod, but I can't for the life of me remember how to do it.

Basically, I want the background in DSL to be like it is in stock. For example:

Instead of shades of grey I want

straight grey (omg never before seen year and a half old bot(underweight too!11!!!))

As you can see I had it like that back on my old computer and now can't remember.

Any help is appreciated!

Discussion / Tournament Fix?
« on: February 12, 2011, 10:43:39 AM »
Is there any way to decrease the amount of points you get for winning a match in tournament mode? The coveted Golden Sawblade ain't that coveted when you can win one match and still win the whole season.

I suppose increasing the points for the AI would work too.

Modifications / Combat Zone Edit
« on: October 17, 2010, 12:49:27 PM »
Here's an edit for the combat zone ive had for a while. I have no idea where I got it from (probably Mad or Sage) but it's really useful and I thought you guys might like it.

Basically what it is is the combat zone with the hazards off. It is also the first arena so you never even have to touch the arena tab when going into a fight again.

Just put that in the arenas folder and you are goood.

Site News and Feedback / Idea
« on: March 01, 2010, 04:40:00 PM »
Make it so a member has to have been a member for more than a year to start a topic in Tournament Discussion? The amount of tournaments started by noobs lately is getting really annoying. Especially the fact that half of them aren't even prepared to do it and don't finish. 1 year might be too much but perhaps 6 months?

Besides, I liked it better on the old forum where there were a few awesome tournaments instead of the multitude that are started nowadays. Tournaments kinda lose their coolness when there are new ones popping up everyday...

Just an idea.

General Support / Annoying problem
« on: December 01, 2009, 08:00:12 PM »
I could deal with this problem before but now its just really getting me angry. I can't scroll ingame for some reason using my mouse. I have to use the page up page down key. I was fine with that(even though its really annoying when trying to stack in stock) but I can't zoom in in battles. Not even with the page up key.

Its not the mouse either because it works on the internet and even in roller coaster tycoon.

I know i said this somehwere else too but this is starting to get me angry so halp

Im on a desktop by the way.

Discussion / What do you use to control your bot?
« on: August 22, 2009, 09:04:34 PM »
Ive noticed lots of bots in SC, PYS, and restocked use the arrow keys to control the bot and space for the weapon. I find this weird because personally, I use WASD and Q for weapons. If I need a scrimech or reverse weapons I use E.

Oh and if your wondering how i put my hands, I put my right pointer finger on W and my right middle finger on D. On my left hand i have my pointer finger on A and middle on Q. If i need to back up i just move from W to S.

What do you guys use?

Other Tutorials / Guide to Making Good Screenshots
« on: July 18, 2009, 08:21:27 PM »
Lets face it, a lot of people on this forum suck at taking pictures. I know Dexterhunter made a guide to crop pictures but this guide will go in depth for noobs that don't even know how to take screenshots. Here we go!

STEP 1: Taking the Screenshot.

You really have two options here. One way is to just press the F11 button and just like that, the picture is taken. The F11 button can usually be found in the somewhat top right corner of the keyboard.

Just click that button while in RA2 and the screenshot should be taken.

The second option for taking the picture would be to click the print screen key. This option is a lot more annoying than F11, but for some people f11 doesn't work. It really is annoying because you can only take one picture at a time while using f11 gives you the choice of taking multiple pictures at once. Oh well. Again it can be found in the somewhat top right corner of your keyboard. Most of the time the key is labeled "Print Scrn"

Screenshot taken! On to step 2!

STEP 2: Opening the Screenshot.

There are two ways to do this also, one to each corresponding option in Step 1. If you took the picture using F11, open your RA2 folder. Look for the folder named "Screenshots". Guess what's inside of it! Yeah the screenshots you just took! Open it up and right-click on the screenshot you want to open. It should say "Open with" on the tab and you should click paint or any other picture editing program. I'll be using paint. The picture should now be opened in paint. Awesome!

If you used the Print Screen key, just open paint or whatever you are going to edit the picture with. Click that Square in the toolbox thats next to the the star. Then just right click and paste and your screenshot should be there.

Now that your screenshot is opened, lets make it smaller.

STEP 3: Making your screenshot Smaller.

From now on all the steps will be the same whether you clicked printscreen or F11.

Now that the screenshot is opened in paint, click that square box in the toolbox. Make a box around your bot as small as possible.

Now that you have the box just drag it to the corner.

Now pull the box so the picture is as small as possible. If you want you can throw that weightclass box in the pic. Gives a bit more info.

Think your done? Not yet! Click file, save as and then name your picture what you want. Heres a very important part, SAVE IT AS A .JPG OR .PNG. Jpg and Png files are much smaller than bmps and people around the forum like them more than bmps.

Your picture is now small and ready to upload!

STEP 4: 2020 edition
Go use Wen's tutorial here

STEP 4: Legacy edition: Uploading the Screenshot.

You're so close! Just upload that pic onto the gametechmods image uploader!

To upload it just go to the front page of gametechmods.com. On your left there should be a list of links. Here you can download stuff, visit RA2 websites, among other things but we want to upload our pic. Find "Image Uploader" and click the link. Now you should come to a screen that has a line that says 'browse' next to it. Click that and find your picture. Now click upload and wait for your pic to be uploaded! Once uploaded it should give you three links. The last two are for links so we want the first one. Copy and paste that and move to the next step!

STEP 5: Legacy edition: Post It!

Now just post that line you just copied into your post. Click post and your pic should be there and look like this:

Smaller than those pics that show the whole workshop and just as much info. We all know what a robot workshop looks like in RA2 so we don't need to see it.

Follow this guide and you shouldn't have any reason to not have a small pictures.

You have no excuse!

If you see any mistakes tell me so I can fix them.

Thankyou

General Support / Problem starting DSL
« on: April 15, 2009, 04:05:35 PM »
Well, I just got DSL again. I haven't played since around the time I built Steel Meatball, so yeah I downloaded it again but now im getting an error I have never gotten before. Whenever I try to start DSL it gets to the main screen, I click Team HQ and the game crashes. I get a pop-up that says 'windows running low on virtual memory'. Reinstalling doesn't help.

What's going on? :?
