Real Robotics Discussion / Re: Bristol Bot Builders
« on: July 19, 2018, 02:25:06 PM »
Not really in Bristol often but I hope to hop down sometime

Traveling from London for the event on the day felt like a mistake initially. LIke "jesus **** why am I getting up at 6am" style. But seeing how chill and also well-organised it was made it worthwhile in the end. Was the best event out of the three events I've attended this year.

Love it dude! Really like the new colour scheme :O
Hope to see this at an event at some point looks gorgeous

It should be at the BBB3 Beetle and Ant event on the 15th July, but it's a little big to be in with the ants  :dumb)

Quite a difference from last time I posted here. Bigger, new 2mm titanium plate at the front, and with a paintjob that is not going to last a second in proper combat. I'm looking forward to fighting again in July at BBB3, hopefully gearing up towards the Euros in October.

I can help out with the motors. Maybe I could make ETekRs and change the whole NPCT64 setup. Are there NPC-Fasts in real life? If not, we should remove them and just have regular NPCs be better.

Perm drive, TW3MR4 drive, maybe even re-introduce stock components with updated stats and graphics? The more the merrier. I can go around looking for motors from other mods and use those as well.

IMO the NPC fast would be a T-74. Which is slightly bigger, faster and heavier version of the T-64. Is planned. Also planned are Right-angle NPCs, which will only be in 'slow' flavour. May be based on the NPC B-81 but would need to be mirrored.

Seems there's no VOD out yet.

Modifications / Re: IRL Components - Pack Three Fix
« on: May 15, 2018, 08:22:05 AM »
I've repackaged Pack Three, after potentially spotting what caused a lot of people to have difficulty opening the Rar file. Seems to be caused by WinRar packing the file in a newer format that cannot be read by older versions of WinRar. Can those who had this issue please try re-downloading and opening that file (there is an _r amended to the end of the filename to differentiate between them), and reporting if it can be opened, or if there is still an issue.

TL;DR If you had issues before, re-download. Also update your damn copy of WinRar.

Killing BOTM one month at a time.

I really liked the castle though.

Site News and Feedback / Re: A New BOTM - Trial Run
« on: May 01, 2018, 07:43:49 AM »
While I do think the new idea was good when proposed by whoever did originally, I guess **** me for trying to take BOTM seriously these last 7-8 months. I thought it was worth my time to try and make something unique for each suggestion, even if I can't say every suggestion was followed to the letter.

Opinions will be a bit scattergun so here goes.

I'd be down with the idea of having the top-rated bots from showcases being displayed on the front page. That selection process shouldn't be fully automated however.

I'd eventually get over the loss of losing the BOTM spot I've made my own since October, because there's a tremendous amount of creativity in the showcases that gets glossed over sometimes. Being able to ping a vote to highlight bots would at least give people.something to do when browsing showcases. I would disagree with BOTM being a joke, unless the joke is at my expense for trying to set a high standard for my entries.

Whilst I think that Discord has a role that should be more prominent, it should never replace the forum's functions entirely. Ultimately GTM to most people inside and outside the community is the forum, and as tarnished as that reputation has been, the last few months have imo made steps towards the right direction.

The forum at the very least is a far better way of archiving and organising information than the Discord will ever be. Example, I feel more comfortable knowing I have a thread for IRL pack chat that people can suggest stuff, than being.pinged randomly on Discord and having to search through a huge chat history for what was suggested.

The fact everything is recorded and organised is an advantage over Discord too. Whilst the wiki may see little real activity, it does a great job in archiving the history of GTM.

Also here's a controversial opinion: I do think this site needs a hall of fame or alumni section. Not something that is open to people voting 10 times for banned scumbags for the memes, but there are currently and past members of GTM who have achieved some notable milestones in terms of RA2 or real-life robotics. A section of the site dedicated to highlighting these people to newcomers or even random people browsing the site might be a nice addition.

Brief updates because it's 4am.

Bot is 99.9% ready for Burgess Hill weekend on the 28th and 29th of April. Last task will probably be adding decals IF they arrive in time. The middle part of the image  is what is planned, if the decals turn up on time. Aside from that, SLAF is ready to go.

New locking bar, decorated because why not? The locking strap I used at UWE was not technically allowed, but seeing as it's a low-impact servo with little edge to it, the locking bar is more just precaution than anything else.

I'm looking forward to the event, another chance to fight is great, but it will also be my first time attending a HW live event in any capacity, so I'm looking forward to experiencing that. Post Burgess, I hope to go ahead with the updated version of SLAF, but I do have another trick up my sleeve regarding another update.

SAW Lance-a-frog. Brushless sawbot able to keep pressure on the cut. Could be good, could be an utter assbot. I plan to find out. :dumb)

I'll be combing through posts for stuff regarding IRL 4 (or IRL TC - I'll have a decision on that some point soon (probably after the Burgess Hill event at the end of this month)

Regarding shell spinners, and the shell parts, I am proposing a slight change from what we have currently. Craig/Cephalopod was the inspiration for this idea, so thanks to him, I think it's a good one:

First off, everything will have a few more polys and mapped completely. Probably will offer all the IRL base colours, and maybe some 'theme' sets. Will come in 4-5 sizes but won't be strictly 100cm/150cm etc Each disc will have 8 APs on the edges, for other uses than shell spinners.

Shell parts will be bigger and cover 1/4 of the disc. they will have an AP point facing inward for attching to the disc, and three facing outward on the top/middle /bottom.  Will still have flat and sloped versions as shown.  This will drop the amount of APs on a shell spinner drastically, so people aren't inclined to put large typhoon teeth on every available panel and AP.

There will also be a single AP on the top and bottom of each shell piece, so people can stack them to create more complex shell shapes. This is just one example.

Also possibly making cone-shaped pieces for Typhoon-style bots. Will have a flat top and not a point as shown.

As well as having normal/armoured/heavy versions of the discs, there will also be some cosmetic choices. I will also include ring spinner discs for peak IRL-ness. The AP points will still be in the middle obv.

All of these changes are to make shells more visually appealing, more customisable, and help reduce AP spam that people moan about. Regarding Pip's idea, I believe the stacking idea is already covered. Thinner parts could also be useful, so if people would like those I'll consider modelling them as well.

Still not sure why Pack 3 has that error, when the first two packs don't. What exactly is the nature of the 'fix' TGM?

Interesting idea on the previous rules with the cluster shuffler, I'd assume the rest of the bot is a 1600kg roller as at the time you didn't need both bots to have the same drive type.

Loving all the bots for RG2, the LW especially. Really neat

This is correct, the 1600kg bot was the same design as Caterpillar but with 4 wheels. The cluster was also mainly sacrificial, as it being eliminated wouldn't eliminate the whole cluster. Would have been very cheap which is why I brought it up with Doot. But would have been 'fun' to see the reaction.  :dumb)
