This sounds interesting. I'll probably enter something.

Real Robotics Discussion / Re: BattleBots Season 2 Discussion Thread

Chomp certainly deserved the win under this season's judging, and may have won under the criteria of previous seasons depending on how the aggression and strategy points were distributed (although I think Bite Force would have the edge in both aggression and strategy).

The better question, I think, is whether this is the kind of judging we want in BattleBots. In my opinion, Chomp basically got one good shot on a very fragile part of Bite Force (that chain would have been taken out by almost any hit), and then did almost nothing else of note the remainder of the match. Meanwhile, Bite Force went with a pushing strategy and took Chomp around the arena and into a couple of hazards, with no additional loss of functionality or even visible damage after Chomp's initial hit. One complication was Bite Force getting caught on its own chain, which allowed Chomp to get in a few hits (which didn't seem to do any damage—I still haven't seen clear evidence that it can do significant damage to an armored bot). The match then almost ended with Chomp laying on its side, the same position it easily spent half to two-thirds of the match in.

Again, the question is, am I really comfortable awarding a win to a robot that got one good shot in during the first ten seconds and then was almost completely dominated for the remainder of the match? I think that weaponless robots in BattleBots need to have a way of winning the judge's decision, and so far it seems like that's almost impossible (aside from Bombshell's near perfect defeat of Red Devil, although even then Bombshell got a very nice first hit).

DSL TC Showcases / Re: Urjaks Old and Masterful Showcase

It has been a while...

I was inspired by Naryar's recent build of Tempest to try out DSL 2.2, and see how shell spinners (especially the flail variety) have fared. It seems that flail razors are significantly less effective against hammers than before, probably as a result of Click's re-balancing of heavy versus light weapons. Ah well, it was good while it lasted. :P

Anyway, I decided to take a crack at Tempest, and got this:

I decided to increase the overall efficiency of Tempest at the expense of aesthetic fidelity to the original. I could go even further and ditch the four 30kg hammers for two 60 kg since the latter will have better stats overall. I might even be able to go all the way to 70 kg hammers if I drop four side panels and the top extender. The bot preforms reasonably well, though I haven't yet downloaded any AI packs so I'm just fighting the original DSL AI bots. The chassis and wheel configuration are slightly stacked, but I was too lazy to finesse them.

It does feel good to be building again. DSL 2.2 should be fun to explore for a while.

As far as I've played, it is worse than Robot Arena 1.

...god help us.

What's worse is that it seems like the problems lie in the fundamental mechanics of the game—mods won't be able to rescue it. I hope that the developers are able to address these issues, but I'm not holding my breath.

This is... heartbreaking. If Jules' video is anything to go by, the game is quite literally worse than stock RA2.

Damn.

Real Robotics Discussion / Re: BattleBots Season 2 CONFIRMED

Shame that Hellachopper was DQ'ed though. The arena walls are now 1.75" thick and apparently they were STILL too dangerous to fight!

Was there ever any actual confirmation that "dangerous" meant "Your weapon is too powerful to contain" rather than "You've already started one LiPo fire and we're not convinced you won't spectacularly malfunction again"? I'm skeptical that Hellachopper is really that powerful of a robot, or that they wouldn't just be able to turn down the weapon speed rather than having to be banned outright.

Hey, nice to see you guys again.

As far as the weapons are concerned, I'm really not sure which ones are best in Ironforge. The hammers seemed like a pretty safe bet, but I'm less confident about those ice pick/blade things. They seem to have decent normals and HP, but I'll probably mess around with some lower-weight shell spinners and test various weapons to see which perform best.

For this bot in particular, I followed your advice Reier and angled the hammers so that they stick out about as far as the blades (it's not perfect, but it does improve performance), and replaced the four medium batteries with two large ones. I figure I'll just keep the DSL disks behind the hammers, since they look cool and would only save me about 10 kg if I replaced them with dark panels.

Any time you want to do battle Naryar, I'll be waiting.

Hello again. I decided to give Ironforge another try, and built this HW SHW shell spinner:

I couldn't stand the transparency of the shell panels, so I used the DSL disks (probably called something else now) for weapon attachment and then sandwiched the whole bot between two large disks, allowing for some bottom protection and producing a very satisfying aesthetic. There are 25 blades and five 30kg hammers for weapons. I had originally intended for this to be an HW, but forgot that the weight limit for them was 400 kg, not 600 kg.

As always, any comments would be appreciated.

Robots Showcase / Re: Somebody is going to build a robot

Is this your first robot? If so, a 30lb robot of any kind is quite ambitious—making it a vertical spinner is even more of a challenge.

That said, I am curious what your design is.  Are you willing to divulge some of the details, or is it all under wraps?

I agree with Reier that bringing another bot isn't the same thing as using different attachments for a single bot. My three pound bot has four different attachments that can be used depending on who it's facing, and all I have to do is attach them onto the robot.

What I'm wondering is where the line gets drawn. What if you build a bare-bones frame and then bolt on a spinner or rammer attachment depending on which type of bot you face? That certainly isn't a small attachment.

no because there's a difference between adding a small attachment and bringing 2 entire robots

What qualifies as a "small attachment"?

I've used attachments like what Ghost Raptor and Bite Force used to my advantage, and I think it's 100% fine. Unless it goes against the rules (like entanglement weapons), or is over the weight limit, it should be allowed.

So do you believe that people should be allowed to enter one robot, but also bring along a different one, and then choose which to use in a fight? And if not, why?

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I honestly don't think competitors should be allowed to modify their robots in order to counter a particular opponent. The last straw for me came when Ghost Raptor put on their "de-icer", a weapon that could only ever be effective against Icewave, and that would have almost certainly lost them a match against any other robot. Biteforce's use of the massive steel plow was another low point for me, as it basically transformed them from a lifter/clamp into a pure wedge, just because they knew that the lifter would be ripped apart by strong spinners. It behaved like a different bot, which brings me to my next point.

Why couldn't a competitor just bring two separate bots, and then choose to fight with the one most effective against their opponent? How is that really any different than what is happening already? And if the two-bot strategy is unacceptable, where do we draw the line? If I keep the frame but replace all of the interior and exterior parts—including the weapon and drive—is it still the same robot? How about if I keep some of the components but change the frame? I say that an entrant should be required to keep their robot the same between matches, barring irreparable damage to a particular component, in which case the team would be expected to mirror the original as much as possible in their repairs.

So this is how you build in Ironforge. That is one incredible bot.

Urjak <3

Lovely looking bot, btw. How heavy is it?

450 kg with one ballast.

In other news, I decided to build a popup because... who knows.

Has something like 18 razors, questionably realistic at best, and can't even self right. Needless to say, it could be better.

sup old man

Hey. It's nice to see that you're still around.

As for the weight limit—I think I understand how it works: 400 kg for heavyweight, except for the up to 200 kg of  ballast that can be added, but is not actually considered part of your bot's weight. Seems kind of odd with the whole ballast thing, but I suppose that it's simple enough.

Thanks for the link Mr. AS.

I've been out of the loop for a little while, and was hoping to re-download some AI packs. However, I can't seem to find 123AI—the only link I found to it was broken, and I can't seem to find the thread anymore either.

I'm hoping someone here might be able to shed some light on what, if anything, happened to it.

If I remember the conversations I had with 123 correctly, the Ironforge AI in most cases was designed in a way that bots could be effective in some capacity, but largely IRL and hence fairly easy. Intended to be new player friendly, if you get what I mean, like Stock, as opposed to DSLs relative challenge.
Bot looks real good though :)

Alright, that makes sense.
