Off-Topic Discussion / Re: Are Graphics Cards really that important?
« on: October 31, 2013, 07:52:50 AM »
The amount of times I've said that I don't think graphics are important and been flamed for it, be it IRL or on the net, is insane. I absolutely agree - as long as you can play the games you WANT to play, who cares? My main game is TF2, so why would I need SUPER AWESOME DOG RENDERING for Ghosts?

Yeah just to clarify:

How would i submit a tourney for approval?
Is the limit 3 months for all or just minor?

1) Much in the same way you would now - before a topic is shown in Discussion, it actually gets held back until a mod has approved it.
2) Just minor.

So what're the new and/or updated rules planned for Display section?

As nobody has contributed any thoughts to it, I haven't got anything planned.

If people can drop some feedback, and eventually we can agree on some rules, we might actually be able to get some new tournaments running. All you people waiting to start stuff... :P

Super interesting.

EDIT:: Just for those who have wondered about how much I actually care... Between the MCR artwork and Scott Pilgrim drawing (both by Slinky) is a post-it saying FINISH RW2005

Gaming Console Questionnaire
1. Are you looking to purchase a new gaming console in the next year? I'd like to, but really depends on money - I'd love a Wii U, a 3DS of some variety and a Steam Box, but that last one can wait...
2. Do you typically purchase gaming consoles from a store or online? Last console I actually bought was my DS in 2005, which was online. But (as gifts) my 2007 Wii was store-bought, and then my 2012 laptop online.
3. Do you consider yourself loyal to a certain brand? If Yes, which brand are you loyal to? Used to be Nintendo, but not hugely. Valve, if anything.
4. Do online reviews affect your purchasing decisions for consoles? Very much so.
5. Do advertisements affect your purchasing decisions for consoles? No.

6. How does the price factor into your decision to purchase a new Console?  5
7. When a new console is released to the market, there are "Launch" games that are available at that time. How important is this to you?  4
8. How important is the availability of certain "franchises" with your console purchase? (eg: Halo with X-Box, Mario with Nintendo, Gran Turismo with Sony, etc.)  2
9. When it comes to consoles, how important is it that you have the latest technology?  2
10. When it comes to consoles, how important is it that you have the oldest technology? (retro-gaming) 2

Thanks for taking the time to fill out my survey!  Do you have any additional thoughts or concerns when it comes to purchasing  a new gaming console?

I think the 2DS is a step in the right direction for Nintendo, especially coinciding with Pokemon X/Y, however it's a shame it looks... like toast. I'm really hoping Valve pull some strings to make Steam Box very competitively priced.

Okay. I think I may have ironed that idea out to a point where it may well work.

Firstly, the Host Score list will be ordered firstly in terms of Largest Tournament Hosted (so there can be bold text indicating that the people below that point have run a Major League/Level 2/Level 1 for example) and then the Entry Level rules changed to the following

A stock tourney even I can enter. Hm. Actually vaguely tempted, as Hax is allowed.

ROBOT WARS SERIES 9 (Stock)

Before anyone asks, yes Jonzu did give me permission to run this. Basically, I didn't like that Series 9 was being run in DSL instead of Stock (IMO, it being run in Stock was part of the fun), so I'm going to do Series 9 in Stock. Because I can.

RULES
1) Stock IRL MW (250-399 kg). In-game glitches are allowed as long as the robot remains IRL.
1.5) I will allow burst enhancing spin motors.
2) Clusterbots are illegal, but you can make a robot with interchangeable weapons.
3) Cheatbot2 and custom parts are not allowed. The 140 cm extender, however, is legal.
4) BFE, AAM, Hax Mode, ZeroG, the Thyrus Glitch, etc is illegal.
5) Popups, jugglers, crawlers and other unrealistic bot designs are not allowed.
6) Burst wedges are not allowed unless your robot uses them as a flipping device.
7) Like Jonzu, I will be banning any robot with a dumb name (for example, Mr Taco in 3D). Try to name it something someone IRL would use.
8) No more than eight MOVING weapons on any robot. Maces and iron spikes are restricted to six each. Static weapons do not have this restriction, but please try to use a realistic number of ramming spikes.
9) Walkerbots get a 100 kg weight bonus.

10) Battles are 3 minutes long in Wham's modded Robot Wars arena (lower walls than Lu-tze's, more realistic hazards, etc)
11) 16 heats, each with 8 robots in them. First round melees each have four robots in them, and two robots advance from them. From there it's a single elimination bracket to see who wins the heat.
12) I am judging this tournament in case a fight lasts 3 minutes. I will be judging on Style, Control, Damage and Aggression.
13) 128 robots in total will be in this competition. This includes the 16 seeded robots from Series 8, your entries, plus the replica byebots.
14) Once your bot is entered, it can be updated until the SBV thread is posted.
15) Any robot that makes the Semi-Finals gets seeded for the Tenth Wars. In a similar fashion, the five GTM builders that made the semis will have reserved spots.
16) If I get more than 32 entries, I will start swapping replicas out for GTM entries.

Special Note: I will be inspecting every entry I get to make SURE it is absolutely IRL realistic. I will be banning anything similar to Search & Destroy or Battle Scar S (despite them not making the semis, they bent the rules WAY too much).

Special Note 2: If you entered Series 8, it's recommended you enter either the same robot you used for that, or an upgraded version of it. However, you don't necessarily have to.

Special Note 3: I have removed the blade's normals for this tournament, so they actually do damage. However, the larger blades have been nerfed a bit, since they do a little too much damage.

Special Events:
Each heat will have a special event in between Rounds 1 and 2.
If you want to enter a special event (bar the War of the Weapons and International Inferno, which will be arranged by me after signups end), simply tell me and I'll throw you in.

My entry will of course be the reigning champion, Mr. Brownstone.

I'm extending that 2 days on my own authority because it's not fair expecting a tight turnaround from everyone when I took so long - I only have 3 responses left to gather, and I probably won't open voting to the general public. The general jist of the vote will still work as planned, and 3 bots will be put in a qualifier (eg wildcard) because we overspilled. I think this was mentioned in the signups thread - this will all be randomized.

I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that Eric 2 was NFX.

The blacked-out name is too long.

Just so you know, I actually made some of the shorter black spots longer to avoid this :P

They (in some cases at least) won't know for sure. It's better to keep personal politics as far out of it as possible for this stage.

rimp indeed.
People who aren't competing can feel free to comment on whatever they want, as well as predict who made what, but no competitor should give it away for definite, in case that causes bias against them in other competitors votes :P

I personally have no issue with that - the Host Score could be adapted in a way (or a new score added) to show the largest tournaments run. It could all be changed to state tournament 'levels' rather than going by the number hosted - for example Level 1 is maximum 16, Level 2 is maximum 32 and Level 3 (Major League) has no maximum (of course you can run a tournament below your level, so you could still run an 8-bot as a Level 2 - this way you don't have to proceed up the ranks straight away and you can just take it as you wish, so you could stay a Level 1 for as long as you wanted, but you only get the 1 year time if you're a Level 3, the other 2 still stick to 3 months. Bit of a redesign, I know, but that could actually work.

This is what I was saying a little earlier, it should be -planned- to hold that many entrants - it's not a minimum, and it's just to prove you can run the larger tournaments. If you somebody wanted to run small stuff, I have nothing against that, but they wouldn't proceed past a Host Score of 1, or if it's only 4 people, it goes onto the Challenge Board.

This is the only issue with this that I feel needs addressing. Perhaps, if the tournament is under half subscribed at the end of signups, or after a certain amount of the 3 month time limit (perhaps 2 months), the host can cancel the tournament with no penalty - either this or they are asked to cut the bracket in half. These are the only solutions I can come up with - but what does the COMMUNITY think?

Awesome :D

Right, so I want to hear more opinions on the current draft - I'd personally really like to get some stuff implemented quite soon.

This could probably be simplified, also we'd need Trov to make the Signups section approval-only, like the Discussion area - I believe it is simply closed right now.
