If you were allowing custom components, I'd say throw my most recent rep, Iron Awe in for a laugh. ;)

why is X-Terminator pink
Cuz it's FAAABULOOOUS!!!

Where's the like button when you need it?

Nice Dr Info and Impact lads.

Heres my most recent rep, posted here because it may not make the pack. With the modern day robots I feel that I need permission before throwing them in.

Oh god. You lot been sniffing something?

Jaydee, no, Roaming Robots bought the rights (or what was left of them) for Robot Wars, there's no company merging going on.

Marty, nope no MinorToms for you.  :yaya) everyone would pit it against my newest replica and it with two of my custom bursts inside, it can throw heavyweights off the roof, never mind featherweights!

herrowface69, either Trov or Click are going to have to teach me how to export the arenas by most likely doing the first themselves, I don't want to put the pressure of them of making the walls hinged so they seem elasticated, otherwise we probably would.

And they're cable wires (says the person who hasn't been to an event in over a decade but who is an engineer remember.)

Right, Don't get too excited, but I felt that since im making the modern arenas, this was essential being my favourite robot still on the live circuit, always had faith in the Iron Awe team and they pulled off 2 British championship wins and bagged several side event trophies.

The reason why you can see Iron Awe 5 & 6 in the arenas is because they're just the 3D models but it does give you some idea what it will look like.

I've got it on VHS too, its absolutely covered in dust though, I got it when I joined the RW club.

I only found out about the FRA Robots Live arena today while wandering through the Team Storm facebook page, so I made it.

325
Thankyou guys :)

he will never do M2! I second black hole.
and scutters revenge :P and *insert series 3 bot*
LOL! You sure?

Dude, just edit your other comment to put this in.

This and sarcasm..

I knew he was doing M2 before you ;)

Thyrus is right haha.

Tankslapper and Stratos, muh fetherwights. Everybody would be so upset if they didn't get in.

New arenas are looking pretty cool.

Cheers mate, no I'm not making any featherweights sorry! Beauty is the three time FW champion and to recognise this I'm throwing its daddy 'Beast' into the pack. You could always take up the paid commission offer on my website if you want your featherweights made. ;)

Any ETA on when we can get a DL of this? I've been in past communities where people have shown off amaazing things, then left without a release... Just don't want this to go that way.
Whats ETA? No I will be completing this pack and releasing it, I'm not the sort of person who gives up on something likely.

And Thanks Trov, always much appreciated to get a compliment from the lad who started this all off.
While I appreciate the compliment,  I don't feel that I really deserve it. You are very talented and most of what you are doing is beyond me.

I could actually do with a hand of you if possible if you have time mate. I've made the Roaming Robots/Robot Wars Live arena, still needs the collisions and whatever makes the flip out zone and pit eliminate robots sorted, but if you could help me get this working then I'd really appreciate it, might throw in a bit of cash if you want.
It is really nice of you to offer but I'm fine with offering my services for free.

I'll need to hear more information if you'd like assistance with the collisions but I think I have enough information to fix your other issue. To eliminate bots that are OOTA or in the pit, just add this under the Tick method:
Code: [Select]
        for each in self.players:
            if plus.getLocation(each)[1] < -2:
                plus.eliminatePlayer(each)
Then assuming self.players has been assigned, you just need to fine tune the -2 so that it is some Y value between the combat floor and the lower floor (where they sit when they are defeated).

Thanks Trov. :) setting up the elimination zones seems simple enough, assuming thats organised in the .py. The first major hurdle I need to get over is understand how to create the arena's GMF, I've looked at how others are laid out and I'm absolutely baffled by it all to be honest. I don't suppose anyone has made a tutorial on the subject before?

Right, rather than take the blind dive in trying to get the arena into the game, I decided to prepare another while I was waiting be be taught. This, like the Robot Wars Live arena, the Robots Live is essential in my opinion as it is the arena that is used for the UK heavyweight championships. It is smaller than the RWL arena but the CPZ is quite nice and unique.

I think it looks quite decent if not boring considering I started it at 4pm today and Ive had a massive hang over, still do actually! :(

Great job with the arena so far man. It's almost like I'm not even playing RA2 anymore with this.

Cheers mate, this is probably one of the most significant comments I've had so far because that is how I want people to feel. I want people to feel like its a branch new game entirely and the fact that youve said I'm giving off that vibe already... it means a lot!

Something 3D printed? I must have missed this, that sounds pretty awesome.
I was skeptical when you talked about donations before, but I realized I couldn't actually come up with a single legit argument against it, so now I'm all for the idea, especially with cool rewards.
Arena looks just as amazing as everything else you've done so far, and I'm looking forward to the release :)
Cheers mate, glad you like how everything is coming along.
the donations have nothing to do with being hired for 3D printing work or custom components, its just in case people feel myself and whoever is helping at the time deserves it, plus it will kick us up the arse to make more stuff.

If anyone wants to see the 3D Printing work I've done for our modelling company then search 'Narrow Planet' on google... just be prepared to be bombarded with trains!

If it's a new release it's polite to ask, I think, like I did with Wham's arena for RW2005.
RR arena looks great, very accurate :)
...Now all we need is a Minor Tom replica to throw into the ceiling. Cough Marty Cough.

Which arena did Wham make like? I only know of his upgrades to the RW arena and the RWED arenas he started but never produced.

Major Tom!?!? Do I have to? :P
Can't wait to use it. Would you mind me using it for Jaydee wars series 2?
I think members are allowed to use any arena for any tournament, because they're sorta "free to use" I think.
Well yes but I would like myself and whoever helps to be credited... heavily. :P

I love the new arena! I'll probably use that one the most...

Boss idea: Spinner from the West

Hah, thanks man. ;) The arena is a bit small I think but obviously I cant change that... I'm an accuracy nut! I think I'll prefer the Combots/Robogames arena when I make it because robots like Storm can have a good run up.

Re Boss Idea: ehhhh?  :baffled:

Awesome work!
I see Mauler 2000 in there.

Well spotted mate. ;) ...

EDIT:
Oh **** I forgot to put 'ROBOT WARS' over the control booths!

If you're worried about the AI navigating the arena correctly, I'd be willing to code it into the arena for you.

Also, I feel like I should mention the SyFy's Robot Combat League. It isn't technically robot combat by our definition but it did look pretty cool.

Mate your too kind some times. I've got a few other hurdles to get over first but once those bridges are crossed, I'll definetly give you a shout. Cheers!

I was thinking about the SiFi RC Leaque arena too, I've only seen a couple of pictures but it does look damn good. I kinda don't think it really qualifies to be in this thread, but others may beg to differ!

As for the prioritized arenas, I definitely think that the Robotica, Robogames and Dutch Robot Games arenas need to make their way into my pack. I understand that the Robotica arena has already been made, but as good as it is... it isn't! So I want to have a bash at creating a new one.

Natef, I found a few decent pictures on the tinterwebs, but looking at it, despite being Classic Robot Wars, I don't think it would be very wise to have people throwing robots like Iron Awe, SOW and Storm in there.  Then again it depends on how much people want it made and if I can persuade someone to help me get it into the game.

If anyone is wondering why I made this thread in the first place, Its because I intend to make the most popular arenas for my pack so that the player feels like they are touring the world to battle.  :thumbup

328
The website has been heavily updated, just needs the 'about' page written, then when the pack is released... a download page.

http://robotwarsra2.webs.com/

if i could donate i would but extenuating circumstances like i dont want to be in debt before i go to grad school brewsky, i'll support this in any other way tho because you're doing this by the goodness of your heart and so i PERSONALLY dont feel entitled to having this pack made, i'm just glad to see that it's being done

THAT BEING SAID it would be nice to have everything you got being given out for free, but you dont have to do that and if you didnt i could understand why

(if this has been resolved already oh well I didn't read the thread too thoroughly)

Nah the pack is free, I'm just accepting donations to keep it going and extra services mentioned on my site in case people want custom components or something 3D printed. Oh go on, you might as well download it when its released. ;) you may never know what your missing out on. ;)

Will the house robots ever make an entrance into this? I'd love to see a proper Shunt.
They won't be in the arena as hazards but I am thinking about making Shunt, Sgt Bash, Dead Metal, Goliath, Hammerhead (concept art) and I'm thinking about doing a competition for someone to design a Unique robot and I'll include it with the others so players can fight them in a similar way to how you can fight 'bosses' in other games. I will make them stupidly hard to defeat though... so watch out!   :rage

I noticed it said Sage was the one who made the RAW 2 arena, I do believe it was Madiaba who modded the tabletop arena to make the RAW 2 arena, not Sage. I could be wrong however.
It was actually a collaboration between Sage, Madiaba, and myself.

Awesome job with Tsunami, HereticBlue.

Thanks lads, I've corrected the information on the website. If the three of you don't want the arena in the pack then just say, you's did make it after all!
And Thanks Trov, always much appreciated to get a compliment from the lad who started this all off.

I could actually do with a hand of you if possible if you have time mate. Oh by the way lads, if your wondering what the round thing in the arena is, its Mauler. I needed something for an idea of scale.

What do you think lads?

It's the first time I've encountered that problem but yes, same happened here. I thought I pasted the wrong link into my new website at first, was a bit baffled. http://robotwarsra2.webs.com/

330
Sorry but this has to be damn quick, I have to dash out.

Very nice job on the long awaited replica. Oh, and does it have the mouth when the flipper opens?

There is a photo on the main page of the new website specially staged for you.  :approve:

Tell me what you think of the new site, the packs name, the look and style of the site and the header image.
Cheers

http://robotwarsra2.webs.com/

331
Oh bloody god... Scared to release the pack now incase you mutate all the replicas. :P Hahaha.

332
There seems to be quite a demand for more UK robots, but what about some representation for other countries? There's no doubt the USA and Netherlands are going to be represented, but I think it'd be a bit of a shame to leave out robots like Phillipa 2 (Belgian, 2nd place in both European championship and 2nd Dutch series) or Snake Bite (possibly the only Swiss robot to enter a Robot Wars competition).

Jesus, you should see what I've actually got planned. I do intend to do Phillipa at some point but I know it will be a lot of work. Snake bite looked and was absolutely bollocks and frankly there's enough crushers and flippers in the pack as it is.

I know you accidentally typed Sewer Snake at first... funnily enough, that & Luzifer will be subs DLC.

I will be making all robots who making British champions since the show ended, such as Big Nipper, Iron Awe 5, Turbulence, Kronic, Ripper, Eruption and possibly a more modern Terrorhurtz.

Right, 5.06am I started this at around 1pm yesterday, my head is absolutely done in. My ash tray is full, I'm out of pints, I'm damn pleased that I've got this week off work. The hardest part to make this was making all the parts line up properly and scale them decently. It's a little bit big but after 4 attempts, I'm not changing it any morel it will still be smaller than xterminator and I think that t's how they compare what your all really concerned about.

Finally a German Robot has made the pack and I am back where it all began... With Tsunami.

Tommy, if you want to learn how to do everything that badly then if you have an apple device I can FaceTime you and run you through everything step by step. Teaching everything I know will be too much for text alone and I don't have the time to post loads of pictures.

Why is everyone scared of 20p per arena? Would it make you all feel better if it went to charity or went on the add funds to future Robot Wars Live events?  :thumbup
I'm personally not a fan of having a paid DLC for an 11 year old game. At the current exchange rate 20p is roughly 34 cents in the US so its definitely affordable but many of the people that play RA2 have no way of paying. It could also be problematic down the line if more people started requiring payments. One of the reasons why RA2 has lasted so long is because new mods are being released all the time at no additional fee. If you think about it, people aren't even paying for the game anymore so its unlikely that you would make much of a profit. IMO, a donate button would probably work just as well and it wouldn't be as restrictive.
Reminder that most of GTM's population still gets allowances from their parents. As if you could make any significant dosh off them!

That is a very fair point now you mention it. It is a shame because those of us who devote our free time and who put a massive amount of effort to get every down down to a tee don't get anything in return other than a few personalised nitpicks and a few nice comments. What some of the lads do is just incredible and I think it's because no-one is ever really going to get paid that in time influences people to give up altogether. I think your right anyway, the RA2 is populated by members about a decade younger than us and they don't have access to things like PayPal. Donations seems like a very good idea though.

Nice Hypno-Disc. Looks more accurate, even if I felt Wham's was pretty spot on.

On the topic of donations and paid DLC, would you take commisions? I know you're already planning a subscriber DLC thing, but what if someone were to give you a bit of money to do a certain replica or arena? While I agree with Trovaner about the "paid content for an old game" thing, I do like your work and don't think the idea of making 3d models for a small fee is that farfetched. Just look at the train simulator community.
Cheers mate, I did feel the same about Whams, although it think it was probably the thrill of how much it looked more accurate in contrast to the DSL version.

It's funny you should mention train simulation, because on a similar note, I picked all this up by co-running a 3D printing and brass etching model company and I do get highly paid commissions quite often... Mind my 3D printing work involves a lot more detail and very precise measurements in comparison to this.

Regarding taking commission to make replicas, components and arenas, that sounds like a good idea! I'd be up for doing it definitely but I would be worried incase I get too much to work on. I've had to bring in two extra 3D modellers to join our business as myself and the other lad, Steve have just been swamped.

What I am suprised by is that no-one has asked me (or anyone actually) on here about 3D printing a working replica model for them to use with their RW Figures.

In other news I've been fiddling around the combat arena 3ds model and I can honestly say that I haven't a clue how it all works and how to put a arena together myself. But on a side note I will start making an attempt with the Roaming Robots/RW live arena using my brief understanding of how the parts of the arena are separated. From there I will plea for help... Again!

Edit: just came across this album from 2003. The photos were taken at the robot wars display event in the Metro Centre at Gateshead, a 7 minute drive from mine and one of the two robot wars events I attended.  I'm chuffed I've found more pictures, I remembered Firestorm and Sir Chromalot looking a state but I couldn't remember it looking that bad. I was given a small shard of firestorm that was broken off and I kept it safe in a box for just two years or so before my mam threw it out... The b****. Still, I have a photo of my 12 year old self with Killalot but I'm not showing anyone that.  :p

Yea the Subscribers DLC will have new robots I'll be making because obviously I'm not going to quit making components after I release the pack. I'll be leaving blank Teams in the AI for the new stuff to be shoved into over time.

Why is everyone scared of 20p per arena? Would it make you all feel better if it went to charity or went on the add funds to future Robot Wars Live events?  :thumbup

Yeah there will be a good few new components. I'm going to be doing a flipper pack that will consist Iron Awe 7's, Rippers, Toon Raider's, Iron Awe 5's and Merlin's flippers without the fancy skins so people can build up modern, prototypical flippers.

A slight update, Hypnodisc now has its sloped body, angled disc, new wheels, new spikes (extras available in a range of sizes) and its Series 4/5 teeth.

Real Thing:

Original..ish (if you ignore the extenders, change of teeth, lower disc and loss of top spikes):

The HereticBlue version which will be in the pack:

I'd still love anyone to death if they did a RW Series 2 Gauntlet.
this

I'd love to but I think it would only work if I made two, mirrored to each other with the battle arena between them. But because the gauntlet is straight, AI should get lost going through the obsticals... It's just I'm a purist when it comes down to... Well anything! I would rather do it accurately :P

As for the 1995 "Rowbat Worz" arena as the Americans say... I do think it would be essential because it was the first arena but it's very simplistic. It depends really. Anyone got good photos of the battle area and the hazards? I can only remember a net & a very simple but fragile plastic bat what swung horizontally.

337
Cheers lads, heres a couple of better shots for you. Damn you three are fast at replying!  :rage

Oh and the drill will be available for you all to use on your robots ;)

338
I was just wondering HB, will you be adding components that we can mess around with? Like different coloured extenders, panels, new burst motors, drive motors
because if we could have more parts to mess around with, we could make much coller looking IRL designs as well, I was just wondering.

Of course.  ;) I'm particularly looking forward to seeing what you all do with the new burst motors and flipper panels/arms and armour.

If you're considering doing tornado with the anti-crusher frame, would think of doing a version of Razer's claw with the hook on it?

Maybe but the servo wont have the power to lift up the frame.

As for big AI packs, unless you can take on Nar AI's 130+ teams I don't think you have the record :P

but let no one stop you from trying to get that goal  :gawe:

130 teams? 390 robots in total? Sod off.  :p Yes it would be nice but I would have to require no life at all to do that!  Lets see how many I do pull off though!

Some of the bots on that list excite me, namely Napalm. I want to see how many pieces you can break it into XD

Nope, no Clown... not that I know of anyway!
Ahh I see you already have an idea of what I'll be doing with Napalm. ;) rightfully I should put every panel of a hinge so it all wobbles as it limps across the arena. I will make all the panels individual so you can break them off separately to reveal the barely modified motorised wheelchair!

When you say 'subscribers DLC', are we talking PayPal donations? Because I will subscribe the crap out of this.

You know how bloody tempting that is now that so many of you have mentioned it? :P Once I make a few arenas (to a high standard of course) then I might charge 20p a pop on in the DLC so added together it will be like youve all bought me a pint!

Just also want to say that I applaud you for keeping the project smooth and posting at a good rate. You have not let us down or made us wait months between updates so I thank you for that.

Thanks mate, that means a lot actaully. Glad you appreciate me not buggering off! P.s Check your rep.  :thumbup

Nice update on Tornado. I feel Zorro could be cool one to make. Don't know why, but I kinda like the bot for some reason.

Cheers lad. Yeah Zorro is mint, probably because its a British take on take on SOW and a Spinner like that is just what the competition had really needed.

I think Ming Dienasty is an interesting choice, look forward to seeing it and trying it out. :)

Same! we best have a look then shall we? ;)

I couldnt take a decent photo in the botlab, It looks miles better in the arena. Causes a damn good amount of damage if the drill gets to whirr away and the bugger selfrights!

339
I like the idea of having unique weapons in the pack and I'll be making their Robogeddon product as a starter robot for people to either practice with or modify so you can make Zorro if you'd like. This should also help give them more business.

340
Thanks lads, Its an absolute joy to use... which admittedly is unique for a clawed robot on RA2.

Thyrus, didnt know I had done that many! looks like the pack will be pretty damn big. What is the largest amount of teams someone has crammed into an AI pack?

UnknownR, I did think the same thing but every reference I've went off seems to have angled holes anyway at least before Razer had its make over and the wings were replaced.

Everyone else, Well If you all prefer Mighty Mouse then I'll guess I will have to have another crack at it. ;)

In other news, Tornado has had an upgrade. It has a better collision, lower ground clearence and no more bouncing around. Another addition is a new wedge to replace the first component I successfully exported with a skin. It now has the wall behind the scoop and the unique spikes to prevent robots from driving over the top so it is very competitive and to top it off, the frame and sides have been weathered so it actually looks like its been through a few battles. I might make an anti crusher frame for people to add by choice but it really depends if.. well. If I can be bothered frankly!  :p

Next up: Mighty Mouse, TAN, Tsunami, Spawn Again, Napalm, Ming Dynasty and Barberous 2-n-a-bit in no particular order then I'm throwing in the towel... until I kickstart the Subcribers DLC.  ;)

EDIT: forgot to answer, No the claw doesn't cause OTT damage but if it crushes your chassis then you'll last about 10 seconds. The pack is meant to be quite difficult and your robots will have opponents that they will not stand a chance against but that's the idea so A: its like the actual competition and B: it makes you plan tactics prior to the fight so you use your brain more rather than wiggling  your controller nobs around aimlessly.... Good luck!  :thumbup
